Gear Talk / Re: fins and board width stand up surf only
« on: August 27, 2015, 06:37:10 PM »
On my Foote board that is 32 wide I have quads and they have worked so good that I have not tried it as a tri.  My JP surf only has tri so I do not have the option of quad. So far it works good as a tri but it has been so flat I have only had it out once this summer.  I wish I had the option of riding it as a quad.

I have the same light and it looks like the same company but it has a suction cup on it. Seems like it works good.

SUP General / Re: Leash Use.
« on: August 26, 2015, 06:27:08 PM »
If a leash is going to be regulated by statute, then there will have to be certifications on them that they can with stand a certain amount of tensile strength.  No common surf leash will be able to be used because of the newer regulations and most likely liability if and when a leash fails.  Are leashes going to have expiration dates on them. Because after so long being left in the sun, the car, or whatever will fall apart with  very little force.  It lets you see how well they are made  and the reason I will never buy or recommend FCS leash products. But again another way for them to fail.

There are enough stories on here about that.  I have had 3 leashes break myself from surfing.

Now also along those lines. What about the method the leash attaches to the board.  I am not talking about the line(s) you use to attach it, but the attachment point itself.  I would think those would need to verified and certified to some standard because that is a point that could fail too. I have had a post on my leash plug pull out in what I would say is small surf.

I have to work with fall protection and harnesses sometimes.  The harnesses have to be inspected and fit correctly with no tears, rips, burns, or other defects. I also have to make sure that I attach it to a point that can support at least 5000lbs. So this is where I am coming from in terms of an analogy. These are the rules I and everyone else in my industry is supposed to follow.  Not  everyone does though.

Prayers out to his family.

I have never been to the Hood river but hear everything about the currents.  The sheriff's report vaguely stated, the distance,  he was found just down the river from where he was last seen 5 days earlier.  I would think the currents would have moved him much farther. Can one of you Hood river locals maybe explain how this could be. Thanks

Nice fish.

My aussie cant sit still so there is no way to get him on a board.  Tried by the sandbar and it lasts about 2 seconds.

Another GREAT video creek!!  I know how much effort you put into those.

Waves everyday for the last month... I hate you ;) ;)

Florida has been so flat this summer. :'( :'( And of course after I leave  your area the waves pick up. Maybe I could haul butt up there for a few days if I see a good forecast. Have to keep my eye out.

Board looks like it is working phenomenal.

DJ, that report has been reported as false.  Not trying to discredit you in any way. I just went looking to see other reports on it and this is what I found.

http://www.9news.com.au/world/2015/07/25/18/05/south-african-police-deny-media-reports-of-fatal-shark-attack-at-jeffreys-bay

South African police have denied media reports that a swimmer has been killed by a shark at Jeffreys Bay today.

A report of a fatal shark attack was picked up by two surfing websites and was briefly posted on 9news.com.au this afternoon.

It has since been confirmed that the story was incorrect. 9news.com.au regrets the error.

Last week, Australian surfer Mick Fanning was attacked by what was believed to be a great white as he waited for his first wave during the final of the J-Bay Open.

After some thrashing and a moment when he punched the shark, which bit into and severed his leg rope, Fanning was rescued by a jet ski and taken to shore alongside competitor Julian Wilson.

Fanning returned to the water for a surf for the first time this morning.

That was intense.

You are riding that board good. Really working good on that small face.

Now the thing that really gets me.  You paddle hard for the wave on your left side, but then you surf regular (left foot forward).  I am goofy (right foot forward) and have my strongest stroke on my left side with my left foot slightly behind my right.  When I go for a wave even though I may be out of position and have to paddle hard on my right side for a wave, I feel all twisted and out of balance. This happens to me on my small and longer boards. I do it and I am getting better at it.  It just feels unnatural and weird.

kayadogg,  getting up on the smaller surfboards behind a boat is basically learning how to do it like a wakeboard.  Sit in the water like with the surfboard between you and the boat. Once you have your feet where you want them, have the driver put the boat in gear. This plants the board against your feet. Then have the driver throttle up and you pop right up like a wake board.  You just have to coordinate with the driver before getting in the water so you are both on the same page.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Re: SLAP tear in shoulder
« on: June 26, 2015, 11:03:41 AM »
Had both my shoulders done.  And I had a lot of damage in both, labrum torn about 75% in both and even some bicep tendon damage.  I did not think twice about getting the surgery done.   My movement is now a little limited in both shoulders and my strength is about 80% back. No regrets at all.

The best advice I ever read was to find a sports orthopedic doctor and a sports physical therapists.  Dr's that would understand that I want to be back to doing all the physical things I was doing before.  Also, don't waste your time on a basic MRI. Make sure it is the one with the dye contrast injected into your shoulder so they can see exactly what is wrong and where.
