Jimmy Lewis Searcher :  12’6”  by   33.5”  by   6.5”  and   363L  Bought a demo over the past summer

The Jimmy Lewis searcher.  My new fishing board. My Cayo had an unfortunate non water related accident and will probably be replaced eventually.  This popped up and I had to have it.  This is the board EVERY RECREATIONAL  paddler should have in my opinion. Seriously.  This thing is so stable and paddles very well.  I sight fish in shallow Florida water and this thing is great.  From a fishing perspective,  comparing to my Cayo. The Cayo was super quiet and if it was a 10, the searcher is an 8.  Not as quiet when stalking fish, because of the rounder nose and shallow V in the nose too.   It will chatter a little in the small wind ripples at certain angles but it is still very quiet. I talked with Marlon at surf expo about it but  I doubt they will make any changes to it. Advantage over the Cayo is that it is 20lbs lighter so easier to move around. It comes in at 31lbs with my fin and its deck pad.  It has a nice deep ledge handle that makes it easy to carry too.  Both boards have loads of tie die points so no big deal there.

PSH hull paddler:  11’1”  by  33.75”  by   4.75”  and  198L.  Bought used 2 months ago.

.  I have not taken this board out yet and I am not worried about taking it out.   I have its bigger brother the 12’6 that I will never sell, and it is such a great around board for so much stuff I figured I cannot go wrong with the matching smaller one.

The new Ke Nalu paddle there with the Mana blade is brand new. Thank you Jim K.

I also got myself a new Ke Nalu paddle with the Mana blade in the 90 size.  I had a used quickblade that broke I had broken once and shortened to about 2-3 inches over my head.  I bought a new grip for it and put it in using the glue I use on my Ke Nalu’s in case I wanted to shorten it again.  Before I had the chance to, I broke the shaft  in a non-paddle related incident.  So I needed a new blade and figured I would bite the bullet of the Ke Nalu in order to have the flexibility and save me money later. The new Mana blade seemed like the one to get.  Now my surf paddle is only head high, I still may go an inch or 2 shorter.  What a difference going to the shorter paddle made.  Keeps your body more centered and prevents you from being too tall on the board.  Definitely like the much shorter paddle for surfing.   The blade seems good.  I have no idea how big my quickblade was so since I never figured out their labeling system.  I can get good cadence with the Mana and still feel some pull.  I was getting into a lot of mushy waves on short boards so I guess it is working good.

Ok so I picked up a few new toys recently.  I basically buy most stuff used or on sale along with a change in jobs.  So let’s get to the list of new fun stuff.

Coreban 8’10”  Platinum:   8’10”  by  29”  by  4. 1/3” and  125L.  Bought used over the past summer.

So now to ride reports:

Rider dimensions: 5’10” 190-195, athletic

Coreban 8’10” Platinum.  This board I am having a love hate relationship with at the moment only because I have not had it in good conditions to really test it. I bought from a fellow zoner last summer. I have been trying to wait til I had some good waves to really report on this board, but have not scored yet with it.  I have had it out 3 times.  All of the 3 times have never panned out.  In Florida here, I probably need a good hurricane swell with some juice to get this thing going.  All three days that I had it out were about head high.  But it was chop mixed in with swell and bumpy.  Although this board states it is 125L, I still find it very tippy.   So when I had underlying swells with chop on top of it, it made it hard to dig and get power to catch waves. BUT.  Some of the few waves I have ridden on this board, IT RIPPED!  Hitting the lip frontside or backside was no problem. You can be as aggressive as you want with the board and it will follow through. The sweet spot on the platinum like the platinum plus seem to be a little further forward on the board than you would expect. I was riding it as a quad with the stock coreban futures set.  It has a nice deep ledge handle which makes it easy for carrying and the carbon construction makes it feel pretty light at 15.2 lbs. with the deck pad and no fins. This board and my jimmy lewis  8’7” stun gun are very similar,  I know, I know why have similar boards. A) because I can, and B) because I like trying new stuff.  I may sell one or the other or both just because I am finding I am not really using them for the waves in my area.  Still thinking about it.

Coreban 8’0” Platinum Plus :   8’0” by 31” by  4. 4/5” (that is what it says)  122L.  Bought a demo  last month.

So now to ride reports:

Rider dimensions: 5’10” 190-195, athletic

Coreban 8’0” Platinum Plus.  Again, demoed this board this past fall.  Had it out on a day where the waves were about waist high, maybe a little bigger but kinda on the mushy side.  Semi glassy swell condition.   The board was a little shaky at first for me.  Fell off a few times while getting used to it and trying to find the sweet spot for standing on it. The sweet spot seems to be a little further forward than you would expect.   After about 30 minutes I was grabbing waves as I could.  Cutbacks were not all that glamorous in the mushy conditions but it could turn and it has potential for when I can get this thing into some juicier waves. I was riding it as a quad with the stock coreban futures set. Deep ledge handle makes it easy carry around.  This one weighed in at about 14.4lbs with the wax that is on it and a quad set of fins installed in.  I am planning to put a wax matt set on this to see how it goes. I have been reading some good thing about that stuff.

Coreban 7’10” Corby:   7’10”  by   29”  by   4.2”  and  112L.  Bought it on sale last month.

So now to ride reports:

Rider dimensions: 5’10” 190-195, athletic

Coreban 7’10” Corby.  This one had me a little scared in going to this volume despite what I read everywhere.  I had been eyeing this board for a while because it has all the other stuff the short wide boards have except it seems like the tails on these boards are pulled in compared to a lot of other similar boards. The futures box was all fugged up though on the board.  No matter what I did, one fin box would not tighten down on the fin. I mean practically falling out. I tried every futures fin I have. Oh no, is this thing gonna be cursed from the beginning.  Made the call that I am going to re-fin this thing and not deal with the futures.  Gamble number 2 and I have not even ridden it yet.  After I dropped it off at the repair shop, I realized I should have at least taken it out and paddled it just to see how it would float me. Oh well.  Basically I had the proboxes put in it by the east coast guru guy that did my race board.  No toe either.

Get the board back and I had one chance to ride it before I get busy with work.  Get out in the water and the swell looks like it is only breaking good in one spot and the longboarders are all over it. Did not want to invade them my first time on a new board that might be too small.  Inside was breaking in the thigh to waist high range with the outside peak in the waist to chest range.  Light winds and glassy conditions.  I decided I would stay on the inside and test thing out on a few there before venturing to the outer break.  The inside ended up being pretty mushy.  Stood up on the board and it was a little tippy. After about 30 minutes I was feeling pretty confident with standing on it.  I fell some but it was nothing that was causing me to miss waves  or screw up other peoples waves.  the first few waves I rode with this thing were in the thigh to waist high range.  The waves were mushy and the board seemed like a dog. Oh no I started thinking. Did I make a mistake with it.  As my balance and confidence with the board grew I edged out to the outer break.  Still sitting inside the long boarders but the waves were breaking more towards me than them so I stayed where I was.  First shot at a chest high wave and the board took off. Ok, it is not a dog, it just needs a little juice.  Wave was still a little on the soft side but that was the flavor of the day.  This board could dig a rail when I wanted to turn. Very solid feel on the turns.  Had a few waves line up for me to where I could get a few turns on a wave. I like it!  The turns on this board are  snappier vs the carvy turns of the L41. Both very fun, just dfferent.  The waves that day really did not give me an opportunity to see how vertical I could get this board but I think it will go without  a problem.  This board seems like it will get better as the wave size gets bigger.  and like the L41, this shorter board seems like it pops over the white water and waves much easier than my longer boards.

Board is a little heavier at 19 lbs with the pad but no fins, but that was also after I had the repair work done on the back boxes.  I was running the front fins at a 4 degree cant and the back ones at a zero degree cant.  Was using the Von Sol Stilletto quad set.

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / new toys ( L41 ST)
« on: April 07, 2017, 06:18:52 AM »
Ok so I picked up a few new toys recently.  I basically buy most stuff used or on sale along with a change in jobs.  So let’s get to the list of new fun stuff.

L41 ST:   7’11”  by  30.5” by 4.5” thick  128L.  Bought used but in almost new condition. Bought last month.

So now to ride reports:

Rider dimensions: 5’10” 190-195, athletic

7’11” L41 ST.  OK , don’t see a lot of these on the used market here in Florida.  I saw this one and blew it off. I have no idea why. I looked at it again about a week later and a light bulb went off.  It is  128 liters and I could have gone a little smaller but the additional volume will help here in Florida with some of the mushy surf.  The first day I took it out it was waist high with occasional chest high sets.  Of course, it was glassier in the morning and by the time I got out, it was starting to get bumpy as the breeze picked up.  Took a few minutes to get adjusted.   Started catching a few waves with it.  It was fun. Fast.  Real carvy feeling to it.  Turns where I want it to go.  Tight carves but not real snappy. Only got a few waves on it before it was getting bumpier and I switched boards.   The second day I had it out was a little bigger than waist high with some chest high sets and even a few larger sets.  Had a hard offshore wind which was really hanging up the lips and me trying to get into the waves.  Glassy conditions but the waves were not lining up that well and the tide was wonky so the waves were a little on the mushy side. No rides with more than a turn and a floater on. I dropped in on one head high set hoping to get to the shoulder but a peak broke also in the direction I was headed so it was just straight drop but the board handled it with ease.  I was running the controller quad set of fins that seems standard with all the L41’s.  This board definitely has a lot of potential and I can’t wait to get into some waves that line up a bit.  Surprisingly it seems like these shorter boards pop up and over the white water easier.  The handle is decent, not great, not a big ledge type like on the jimmy lewis or coreban boards.  it still has some ledge  but not as deep.   The board weighed in at 17.6 lbs with the fins and pad on it.

Gear Talk / Boards and other stuff from surf expo
« on: September 12, 2016, 11:06:12 AM »
So I was able to get into surf expo to check things out.  There are usually fun parties and lots of eye candy. There are always neat things to see and some stuff that is just unusual.  Here are some of the things that I thought were interesting.

Wax mat.  This is cool because it is an alternative to the rspro hexagons.  You can buy it in smaller sections.  I put my hand on it and it seemed like it had pretty good grip.

Dry robe. This might be good for some of you guys in the colder areas.

Seat rack.  This might work well for some of the smaller boards in SUV’s

This NSP race board looked interesting with its deep footwells.

Fanatic, was able to see one of the stubby models up close.

Jimmy Lewis, had to stop by and see what the Jimmy Lewis booth had. Lots of boards to drool over in there. Especially since I now have a searcher for fishing. Was able to talk with Marlon a little bit about maybe modifying it slightly to make it a great fishing board.

the 9’6” supertech in person

Focus Rawson boards. These looked good.

Deep. Could not believe there were a few of these there.  I gave the guys some hell for not having a minion there though.  Apparently there is a Minion2 though.  From the photos of it looks like the tail is more pulled in.

Coreban was there with a Corbie, new versions of the platinum, platinum plus, and California models. These all looked real good.  I am liking the coreban sizes. I still want to try the corbie. I now have a platinum, not from the show, but a great deal on a used one. Waiting to get some good waves before I write about it. So far only had it out in some choppy crap and it ripped on the 2 waves where it actually lined up for me.

Kazuma, really stoked to see these guys there. There has been some good reviews of these boards and I am liking the sizing on them.

I made it to the show Friday morning and the 7’10 Tanto was already sold. Dammit!!

The 8’4” Tanto

F One looks to be stepping into the market with a bang.  There shapes looked good.  And they had 4 boards there that were made with riding a foil in mind because they all had K boxes.  I am digging this because I have the perfect place where I can ride a foil and have blast. So yes I am hoping to have a foil board in the future.

There were other brands there that  just did not excite me  even though I did look at some of their stuff like Naish, ECS, Paul Ohana, Doyle, bote.  Starboard was there but I honestly have no idea why because they had like 4 boards and which were nothing special.

Gear Talk / Coreban Corby
« on: April 01, 2016, 06:08:31 PM »
Apparently Coreban now has a tomo style type surf sup call the Corby.  I saw one around a week ago and kept forgetting to ask about them on here. It looked decent and the weight was not too bad. I have heard they make decent boards  so I was curious about these.

From the website it seems they make them in 3 sizes.  I was wondering if anyone on here has tried one.
