heard stories of suffers who've encountered tsunami and rogue waves but were able to survive because they opted to let it pass beneath them.

we weathered out this tsunami high up above the city of refuge. only later to be joined by a newly arrived chilean named giselle (talk about a rock and a hard place). seems like all the dolphins of the world converged there the next day to celebrate another day of living.

to answer the op's questune... yes, but it was only a quick shower due to the drought and water shortage in kona.

we're safe in the jungles near hilo again, aloha!

just happen to have several garmins including their 310xt. sure have to admit wishing that i knew about the speed puck mikelefty had posted about though so that i could have i made a more informed purchase...

So I bought one of these 2 months ago, been using it on my Bark in various flat water and rough water runs. I always use a Delorme GPS that is strapped to my camelback to record my distance, avg speed, and track of my runs. I rely on the "feel" of my craft gliding, not the gps. This SpeedPuck is really kind of of different. It has a large visual field of view reading from the deck of my board. It reads speed in knots, compass heading, and an average speed for 10  seconds, and the coolest is the lift/headed bar graphical. Most of my runs are long upwind/downwind runs, this is really helpfull to maintain steady but consistant strokes especially into headwinds. I really love it as I often paddle into filthy strong currents in the various estuary's and bays I often paddle in. It runs on 3 aaa batteries, floats, waterproof to 3m, and is a bit pricey (300-350 bucks), but I plan to use it as a back up compass for my pleasure boat anyhow. Been thinking if I order a custom race board I may want a recessed deck mount for one. I can use the paddle blade to press button to switch between the three modes (compass, avg speed, max 10 second speed), really cool.

we're now at 15,000 ft... heard about chile as we left hilo back to kona late last night. drastic changes water surging back & forth (crazy) today at hilo bay. huddling at the windows overlooking place of refuge and watching tv with our new friends makes for an interesting vacation.

good point there ponobill. i can imagine seeing dentures fly only to realize i don't have dentures (yet). the only net i could dig up is like 24' in diameter maybe tying off mid-point will be a solution (12' dia is legal limit here btw). also might have to work out a quick release tie off at the wrist rope in case one accidently snags something more than they can handle.

Fish Tales, Stand Up style / cast a net?

march through april is smelt season here in chicago.

dip nets and other contraptions were the norm back when these fish were more plentiful. i'm wondering if a throw net off a sup will offer the necessary mobility to get over the schools wherever they may be. might take one down to warmer waters to see just how hard it is to cast off of a teetering platform.

smelt are like small sardines eaten bones 'n all...

there are several techniques but i'm thinking that this is about as simple as a toss can get...

those weights would wreak havoc on most composite decks so inflatables may be the way to go. just wondering if anybody else is thinking along the same lines here?

option 1 softcover

(|
(|
  |)
  |)
(|
(|
  |)   1. take some pipe insulation and slit it halfway along its length and open like a sandwich
  |)   2. string them together with twine "sewn" through the splayed out halves
(|
(|
  |)   3. stagger the pipe insulation so that they don't all meet at the same point to extend length
  |)   4. you can also assemble this into a tube, flat drape, or even a board hammock (now get to werk!)
(|
(|
  |)
  |)

option 2 hardcase

envision the way you can glue the pages of a book together and cut out the section inside to stash yer goodies...
well take the eps styrofoam sheets used for insulation and construction glue (and just go to town!)
profile your shape and leave the two outer layers intact
cut out your void and use the cutouts for building your next board
you can also use duct tape for the hinges and closures (or to give it that pleather like skin).

please send all royalties to your favorite charity...

Can't express just how impressed I've been with the Rudy Project Noyz Tactical in Matte Black With Impactx Photochromic Clear Lens for ballistic grade protection. The RX-optical insert option seemed like a better choice than going with interchangeable prescription lenses that are also available. Both offer a choice of wearing with or without contact lenses and maintain viability if one chooses to go through the surgical option. With the additional peripheral side shields and floating retainer (adjustable lanyard), they are ready for pretty much anything on land, air, or water. They go from almost totally clear to very dark and back again really fast. 360° adjustable temples and nose bridge ensure a snug fit especially for us nasally challenged pacific islanders.

Technique / Re: Training boards
« on: January 28, 2010, 09:37:18 PM »
other than its ultra-convenience there are few features of the uli inflatables that make it shine above the rest. one thing i do find is at times it performs like a "medicine board" which can be slower and with less than optimum glide especially in unfavorable conditions. and in those same conditions it can also be a bucking bronco! incredibly fun, but definitely of a very different sort.

a few miles of muscling 11' of flex-o change-o and you feel like flash gordon switching over to any performance racer whether it be a bark ultimate, sic, or penetrator. unlike an uli you can't roll those carbon racers up and take them just anywhere.... and isn't that kind of convenience a critical factor in having a training board anyway?
