I had an umbilical hernia in the mid 90's Fully insured all my life, with a Major Medical Gold Plan. I was paying $10,000 a year at that time, for a high deductible plan.
Hernia wasn't covered..... A frick'n Hernia wasn't covered.
I never paid another insurance bill in my LIFE. NEVER. I was done.
I lived for 10 years with a growing mound around my navel.
Prone surfed with it. I bounced my fat self off that hernia for a decade... and it hurt every time.
Around 2005, I felt an instant change happen. I self diagnosed from the internet.... since I hadn't seen a doctor in those 10 years.
Walked into an insanely busy Hospital Emergency Room on a Friday night.... 3 hours just to check in. I simply walked past everyone and said "I have a strangulated hernia"
BOOM.... 20 minutes later they were operating on me. (Mesh) Because I was correct in my diagnosis, and as TD said...it can kill you very quickly.
3 days in a private waterfront room, overlooking the harbor. VERY expensive... and very nice.
NO insurance. None.
A month later I got a bill for $14,000.... I threw it away. Never heard from them since.
Get'er done Eastie... it's a cakewalk! And you don't want it going bad by neglecting it.
Wow Rick, it seems like we've been on the same plan!

I hope I am not stepping any toes here but south of town on the south side of Moss Landing, there is a lot of room on the right swell and tide (small NW and high tide).
Just go south of the main peaks and you can find miles of uncrowded peaks. If anybody yells at you, just don't tell them that I sent you there.

Seems like the thought of being violently attacked or eaten by a 18 foot great white shark has kept the crowds down in your area.
That worked for a little while out here.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KRON) – The big ones are here.
The Monterey Bay is home to great white sharks year-round. But the largest migrating sharks — some as huge as 17-feet-long — show up each year in October.
Locals and shark experts refer to October as “Sharktober.”
“I found my biggest yet for 2019…a whopping 17 feet!” wrote wildlife photographer Eric Mailander. “(I) could easily tell size by the 8-foot dolphins that swam nearby. Later I found another whopper of about 15 feet.”Mailander helps Monterey Bay Aquarium shark scientists track shark populations along the Central California coastline.
While observing behaviors with his drone, he sees the stealthy ocean predators glide under boogie boarders, surfers, and stand-up paddle boarders. No one ever notices what is just below the surface, Mailander said.

No Kai Lenny in the top ten?
The web site seems a bit disorganized.
It's no wonder that anybody outside our small little stand up world has ever even heard of the APP World Tour.

I can’t believe that Red Bull is not going to live stream this event. Hell, even the local junior high live streams their football and basketball games.
I also bet dollars to doughnuts that the general carnage of trying to fit 14 foot race boards into 10 foot closeouts will soon show up on one of the surf internet sites to prove how dorky our sport is.

Giant Ocean Beach on a race board?
Sounds like fun.

I'm re-reading Larry McMurtry's "Anything for Billy".
McMurtry is my favorite author of all time and this is one of his best.
It reads as easy as drinking a glass of water. Kinda like a drive-in movie playing in my head.

My tastes in music are as far away from heavy metal as you can get, but I LOVE this cover of one of all time favorite songs:

This is the fastest and surfy-est stand up board I ever owned.
The fins are barely toed in.

The eastside of Santa Cruz is a no-foil zone for good reason.
