As long as you are not bottoming-out your rack pads, the straps are probably not the culprit.

You could have used a plasma cutter :D. But seriously, a common hacksaw will cut a CF shaft in seconds...

Probably a good time to talk about stress-risers (which can occur at abrupt transitions in construction techniques).

Notice those weirdo cuts in my carbon  ;D  Trying to kill the stress riser.

Yes I did DW,  I was actually hoping you would comment rather than me just butchering theory.

Probably a good time to talk about stress-risers (which can occur at abrupt transitions in construction techniques).

Those who followed Bill Foote's recent post on his custom sandwich construction might have noticed that he effectively avoids creating stress risers by utilizing the same construction schedule throughout the board.

2" overhead (72")is working out great for me whether my 7'10" or 10 footer.  I could feel it a little in my lower back at first but now feels pretty natural.  The slightly more aggressive stance is great or paddling out, catching waves and surfing.

As far as hot glue goes, my simple understanding is that the Kenalu is designed with more surface/contact area at the attachment points allowing for use of glue instead of epoxy.  I've found that even 5 min epoxy can be hard to seperate sometimes.

There are lots of other notables but your list hits the top ranked surfers who now also paddle; except for Laird of course (he just belongs).

I know there's a decent number of Infinity Sup lovers. But mine was the most fragile board I've ever owned in 25 years of surfing. Maybe it was just a weak glass job, but I couldn't get rid of that thing fast enough.

After about a dozen or so sessions, I'm happy to say that my Infinity Phoenix seems to be pretty tough.  A couple paddle marks on the rails but no dings.

Who gets to decide when to take the sign down? Hmmm...

Let's face it the Landlord can show up anytime, our best defense may be to remain as unappetizing and tasteless as possible...I'm on it.

Bill Foote's recent posts about his "sandwich" construction for custom boards goes a long way in demonstrating that the technology gap is closing between custom and production boards.  It all depends on what you are prepared to spend.  Apparently Foote will custom-make your board either way.

If you are consdiering a traditional 6+6oz deck and 6oz bottom, just stepping up to S-glass alone will yield significant gains in strength.

:D :D  No Zoner is an island, we did this together.  Group hug!    ;D ;D
The bad news is that if you take out all the posts where people repeated themselves repeating someone else's blog comments, that'd knock 10 or 15 pages off.  Knock off a few more for people misunderstanding what someone else wrote.

On the other hand, this thread got this long without barely any photos taking up space.  That makes it a lot more dense than most threads.  In fact, some of the posts have been quite dense.

Crap...I forgot what I was going to say ;D

That's why this debate is subjective.  Do you want board designs to continue to become narrower, lighter, more fragile, and even more expensive (bark phantom $4,100) in exchange for a 0.2 MPH increase or do you want reasonable limits to keep the sport accessible and continue it's growth?

But, will the average paddler be motivated to compete on a lower technology platform than the elite paddlers?   One reason there has been so much interest in SUP racing is the grass roots aspect of the equipment.  The average paddler could be paddling next to an elite paddler on the very same equipment in a given race.  As the top technology becomes unattainable (and unridable) for the average Joe, I would expect some may lose interest.

Celeste take a look at the USCG classifications at
http://www.uscg.mil/hq/cg5/cg5214/pfdselection.asp
The Mustang is rated at 35lbs, a Type III inflatable device.

Oh, and I would never poke a bear with a stick, not even a caged bear. :D

The problem with treating it as a carry-on is that the paddle will not fit in the overhead or under the seat.

Can I blow it up 90% and still be legal? What about 50% or why not 20%.  What happens if I lose my board 5 miles offshore and the vest fails to hold air, can I (or my carcass) be fined? ;D
