Jim, per the SUPAA 2014 Rule Book, it appears you are right.

But, in any event, I'll have my twin-fin Fanatic at the Freezin' For a Reason race later this month so you can experience this for yourself if you like.

Chapter 1: Equipment

Article 1: Application of this chapter.
This chapter applies to all surfboard shape, 12’6 and 14’ foot and unlimited boards.

Article 2: Board Restrictions
2.06 All boards, except unlimited and surfboard class, must have only one fin.
2.07 All boards that are currently in production or that have already been made will remain legal until 2016.

Article 3: Board Classes Defined
3.09 ‘Fins’ are defined as any external attachment or protrusion on the underwater surface area of a board that is 6 cm (2.4 inch) or greater in length.
3.13 An ‘Attachment’ is any component added to the surface of the board hull, such as but not limited to: fins, handles, foils, etc.

We reconfigured the ads to free up the right side of the page and expanded the forum width to 97%.  That should allow more real estate for content.

I put a Surfco (EZ Plug) handle on the tail of my first board (long gone) and I'm thinking about tail handles for my current boards including my Phoenix.  Surface mount sounds good. We don't get huge waves here but the short period beach break can be relentless.

It was. I said, hey look at the size of that sea turtle!  Next thing she's paddling for shore.  But, I haven't given up yet, she did get out for some prone surfing this summer so there is hope.

If you go this route you need something to attach to; screw inserts, either internal or NSI surface mount etc.

With a grip parallel to the board, you would necessarily have to grip the handle fully, involving fingers and thumb which could result in an injury.  You would probably only have to get your hand pinched once to realize that this is not optimal (ask me how I know).  Having the handle come across the tail of the board allows you to use the safer finger tip only grip.

That is some great perspective Waterman! I've had all the symptoms of FOMO for as long as I can remember but FOLIT only since my early 40's...and I continue to suffer.
