How is an SUP not a 12 ft kickboard ?  If you are in the water kicking behind your 12 ft kickboard, are you still required to have a lifejacket ?  If the water police approach and you forgot your PFD, can you jump in the water and get on w your high resistance kicking workout that is exempt from the PFD requirement ?

The catch-all is that they look at primary propulsion, the paddle...

Does anyone else find it funny that a SUP dealer is SUP'in on a traditional longboard?

On a serious note, and you illustrate this point very well, the paddle is really the only variable.  Now where did I put my 10x24 log...

Newt, (since you live close by) a couple weekends ago the Sea Girt lifeguards kicked 4 jumbo-SUPs out of the line-up for that very reason.  Sent them south to the kayak beach.  The times they are a-changing...

Technique / Re: Balance and footwork: Just observing...

I brace a lot too, for all the same reasons as DJ. But skill is relative. I paddled my F16 in the Willamette on Friday, the first time since my operation. Some pain, but not bad. There were a ridiculous number of SUPs out in the water. As I passed a clutch of young girls and a guy, I lost my balance for a second, and did a could of big steps backwards, caught myself, and cross-stepped back to the rudder. One of the girls said "Wow, you move like a cat on that thing."

Hmmm.

You'll need to change your name to Pono El Gato...

Gear Talk / Re: Handheld VHF Recommendations
« on: July 12, 2014, 09:34:43 PM »
Is a VHF unit with GPS + DSC equivalent to a VHF + PLB, or does the PLB provide additional functions that aren't fulfilled with the VHF/GPS/DSC combo?  ???

No, DSC simply relays your GPS location and your ID through your VHF radio and is limited by the VHF range while a PLB is transmitted by satellite anywhere in the world.

The Shape Shack / Re: Ding repair, Q-cell

DW, I didn't know that about Q cell.  It's funny though, even the paints used in production SUPs are not rated for below the waterline.  And also ( marine) expanding foam, as I found recently.

SUSpect, Good Samaritan laws generally provide protection from liability when rendering emergency assistance in good faith.  Using your PLB would be like making a 911 call.

Also, consider a handheld with GPS and DSC.  And make sure it is a full 5 watt unit.

Take a trip to a local marine supply and check out all the different features that may or may not fit your needs.  For instance, a huge display is absolutely necessary for the reading-glasses set.

I've had Monster Traction on the nose of my 10 footer for a couple of years with the occasional re-spray.  It provides great traction for running to the nose but it is like coarse sandpaper to fall on.  As far as sticking to poly, I would mask off, lightly sand and test spray a small area. And definitely don't spray anywhere you intend to sit.

It's time for me to re-pad my 10 footer and i will probably stay with the same set up but I'm also considering going nose to tail traction pad or possibly wax, largely depending on the condition of the deck under the pad.  For your poly board,  Hydroturf does offer a special 3m adhesive film for "plastic" decks.
