Flatwater and Touring / Re: Fall Touring Gear For The Northeast

What happens to those things when you go swimming? Don't they fill up with water?

Piece of 8... These Kokatat paddling pants sound very similar to the Helly Hansens you mention, but they come with attached waterproof socks as well.

I just pull these over whatever, put on some neoprene booties... good to go, totally dry. Only $91 CDN.

Yesterday (Saturday) I went out for a 4 miler on the ocean in RI. The temp was chilly- in the low 50's- and the wind was pretty stiff at 14-18kts. I wore a pair of NRS Hydroskin 1/2 mm pants and 1/2 mm long sleeve top with a short sleeve gore-tex paddling jacket over that. 5mm booties and no gloves. Topped it off with a thin poly-pro hat. I was humping it pretty hard, especially the return upwind and was comfy in that get-up. The water still feels pretty warm though I didn't go in. Looks like we are gonna get some serious surf wednesday. I'll probably-finally- break out the 3/2.

Here's a couple I've read recently that are worth taking a look at:
- Blind Descent true story of two teams racing to reach the bottom of two of the deepest caves on earth.
-Born To Run Great story (true-ish) about ultra long distance running in Mexico and barefoot running
-Long Way Round
Shadow Divers
None of these are new but if you have not read any of them they are all good reads.

Gear Talk / Re: Best Wet Suits for SUP Surfing

Another vote for the Hyperflex AMP. This is an outrageously good suit. Very stretchy rubber, waterproof seems, and a plush poly liner. The neck entry lets in very little water-no flushing. In Rhode Island/ cape cod, my 3/2 worked til christmas last winter and a hooded 5/4/3 worked great the rest of the winter.

Maybe separate the "east coast" into a few sections such as "New England", "Mid-Atlantic" and "Southeast". It seems there are a large number of us here in the southern new england region from southern maine through cape cod down to matunuck. As well as a chunk down in the Fla area.

I've been using the Lifeproof since May. I use it alone (no double bagging) and it has been wet several time without issue. However, for no good reason, I am just getting nervous about it- especially the charging door. It wouldn't take much to accidentally open that sucker up and flood the case.

I was out surfing a few weeks ago and met an older gent, maybe 60ish?, who had both knees done 18 months ago. Don't know if he was as good as new, but he was paddling and catching waves, havin a blast. Good luck.

Though this particular one isn't going to cause any trouble.

"Could Lance compete in stand up?"

Yes and yes.
Legally- The way I read all the accounts Lance is (will be) banned for life from any sporting event that appears in the Olympics. That's why he will no longer be able to compete in sanctioned triathlons or marathons; and he can just forget the local hammer throw tournaments. Stand up paddling obviously is not in that category so it seems like he could pay his entry fee and line up with everyone else. That's not to say that a particular race organizer couldn't say, "no thank you, you are not welcome here."

Athletically- Not to disrespect the C. Baxter's and D. Ching's of the world but I think Lance would crush anyone racing today, wouldn't even be close.

I have no doubt at all that he doped all of his career, but setting that aside he is still a biological freak. The way his body can handle intense aerobic activity is superhuman. There has probably never been anyone like him who has competed in world class level endurance events.

Nice! I have always loved the hockey tradition of the players doing crazy shit with the trophy.
