First heard about it two years ago. Wanted to do it last year but was not trained. Going to do it in '13, already training. There, I've said it.  :)

SUP General / Re: Tips for teaching highschool students?
« on: November 13, 2012, 05:57:48 PM »
I've been a high school teacher for 14 years and I am an L2 SUP instructor. Here is my advice: DO NOT TEACH THE ACA INTRO SUP CURRICULUM! They will not give two shits about forward strokes, torso rotation, blade entry/exit locations, beam draws etc. Most will not listen to that and wouldn't care about it if they did. Have them PLAY. Head stands, pivot turns, nose stands, tail stands, run back and forth along the board. Have them race each other. Have them pair up two on a board and race other pairs. Paddle the board "backwards" (fin first) and see who can keep the board going straight the longest. Team up and play keep away with a nerf ball. Make sure they fall in a lot. As they do this they will both 1) figure out a lot of the proper technique stuff on their own and/or B) become more receptive to hearing advice from a teacher. Again- have fun.

That's what I would do anyway.

I use GoogleEarth. In the 'tools' drop down there is a distance measuring tool.

Is it Hans Christian Anderson? Although he is 19th century so I guess that's not it.

I've had glass work done on two boards this summer by Carl Ladd at Osprey Sea Kayak in Westport, Mass. Very good job. 508 636 0300

Laird do crazy tricks with his (I'm assuming he is running a quad)

Laird runs a single fin with two side-biters. Hope that doesn't bum you out.  ;)
Damn! That's what I'm running. Maybe it is something else then.  >:(

I have been wondering this too. I've had a used 10 6 for about 6 months now, always run as the tri fin it came with. After watching Laird do crazy tricks with his (I'm assuming he is running a quad) I am gonna set mine up as a quad so I can do helicopters and surf the board backwards like him. I figure the ONLY difference between me and him is the fin set up.  ;D

Going to explore downwinding next year. Hoping to get together with fellow local zoners for some long DW runs.

Got out for three hours after work at a special place in RI. Head high plus. Only 6 or 7 proners and one other SUPer. Really fun.
