Ok, Finally I get out  on my new Jimmy Lewis 11' first time ever. I never set foot on a paddleboard before but have 27 years windsurfing experience and some early years surfing experience.

I went out at low tide in Hyannisport, MA protected by a 1/4 mile jetty with basically light ripples to light chop. I weigh 230 lbs and found the board shaky as hell but didn't fall in once that day. The next day I tried wearing water shoes and fell in due to stickiness of water shoes and the non skid mat. Took the shoes off and didn't fall in again but did the shaky wakey all day.

The problem I had was cramping of my feet. I could only go out for small periods of time then my feet would cramp up. Is this normal for beginners?

I probably should have bought a bigger board at my weight, something like a 12'6" but I didn't want to get stuck needing to buy another board as I got better. Plus, I don't plan on keeping this weight I gained in the last few years.

I cut my Spanker paddle 9" above my height and for some reason it seemed short. You do measure it from the blade to the required height, right?

I've had five knee surgeries on my right knee the last being an ACL and two shoulder surgeries on both shoulders, the last being a complete tear of the right shoulder. My concern is my knee with the shakiness of the board. So I have the following questions:

1. Will the shakiness of the board go away as I get better or should I have bought a bigger board. Again, I have only been out twice.

2. Will the cramping of the feet go away with more time on the water or is it just me?

3. So far the shoulders seem OK but paddle seems shortish even though I cut it 9" above my height.

Hopefully, these are all rookie symptom's.

SUP General / Kelsey Grammer has heart attack while paddle boarding
« on: June 02, 2008, 12:38:47 PM »

Kelsey Grammer is hospitalized in Hawaii after suffering a mild heart attack, his rep says.

The 53-year-old Frasier star is "resting comfortably" and is expected to be released early this week, the rep says in a statement.

"Grammer experienced symptoms Saturday morning after paddle boarding with his wife Camille at their Hawaiian home," the statement says. "Grammer was immediately taken to an area hospital where it was determined that he had a mild heart attack."

Gear Talk / Cutting the Spanker
« on: April 21, 2008, 02:52:05 PM »
I'm about ready to cut down my new Spanker paddle, I just want to double check the type of Epoxy to use for the top handle. I bought Loctite 5 minute Epoxy. Is that the right type of Epoxy for a carbon fibre paddle?

Thanks in advance.

SUP General / Transporting a 11' SUP
« on: April 07, 2008, 04:37:41 AM »
It's been years since putting a surfboard/sailboard on top of a car roof, especially something as big as a 11'. I always had short boards, vans or a pick up trucks. I'm now driving a Chevy Avalanche with factory installed racks.

I have rack pads and tie down straps so I guess it will be ok to transport if you know what an Avalanche looks like. I would be doing highway driving on the weekends I'd hate to find out the hard way.

Any feedback is welcomed.

SUP General / Paddle height for shoulder surgery.
« on: April 06, 2008, 04:50:41 PM »
I'm starting this topic from another thread. I bought my first SUP recently and I'm looking for recommendation for paddle height to compensate from shoulder surgery.

I've had surgery on both shoulders (rotor cuff) left shoulder partial tear (1998) , right shoulder complete tear (2006). Presently shoulders seem fine below the shoulder, weak doing anything above the shoulder.

John on the other topic thread recommended going shorter to compensate the shoulders. The question is, how much shorter? I'm 5'9" or 68" and have a Werner Spanker paddle. Werner recommends 6-8" above the head which would be between 74" and 76".

Trying to figure out how much to cut dowm from there.

Thanks to those who already replied  on My First SUP thread.
