I did both surf-specific kayak and OR-1 ..sold them - not for me. I find -standing- a hundred ways more satisfying with less tendency to sit-n-rest. A sliding seat is OK, but I don't much like going backwards anymore ..now that I can stand and go forward. 'Wind's a pisser tho'.

A decent handle also helps you get onto dry sand if you have a getout where the water depth is fairly deep close in ..with short period shore pound. Your board is not sliding in/out, rolling around ready to hunt you or anyone nearby.

I only checked two US airports, Baltimore and Philly .. BWI can be had for about $400 R/T. (Not from Philly ..but from Norfolk?!)
Non stop is a big deal.. it took us a gastly long time 20yrs ago getting from BWI to San Jose/return. Of the many, east coast airports Southwest is flying into SJO, only BWI is non-stop.

A well tended travel site suggested this car search site. It looks pretty good. http://www.autoslash.comJim

Wardog, My wife and I did the same in CR, San Jose - Nosara - return ..about 20yrs ago with a 4x4 Suzuki - in fricking Rainy Season - September. First timers .. not experienced enough to know better. Sometimes you're better off stupid/lucky.
In Orlando with all the Euro families headed to Disney, they get nearly $200 a day for those highend SUVs. My thoughts are inline with Disco.. but even Minivans are nearly $100-day. I'm a cheap bastard. I would rather spend the money on good food or more toys. A $600-weekly car rental looks like a decent used board to me.
Probably best for my psychological budget is a compact and a bag with pads ..and do the long straps like PB suggested. I'll scope out the offerings to find a small hatch. Thanks. Jim

I'm still going to get out of here to FL before the water warms up here.. Frontier can have me+board in Orlando for cheap-n-easy quick trips. I will carry about a 9' board. I think I would prefer a hatchback vs. something where I have to soft rack the board. Maybe you have already scoped this out... Thanks. Jim

Beautifully photographed ..anticipation of a severe environment! ..but then they let me down when one said; " ..going to War ..hopping into water 35 to 45-46 degrees" Waaaa?! Chit - I'm half a zillion klicks from the Arctic and my local water is 33-34f. Still some seriously pretty film ..they just needed the Chiteating grin Creek gets from shrinking his nuts into poppyseed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBJyo0tgLnwJim

Going nowhere slowly is fine with a paddle or oars but dreadful for me in shoes. I get a news summary from Quartz each day and another one of the bits was this.. http://www.bbc.com/news/health-31095384I love 'confirmation bias'. Jim

So... How's come cold water always looks green/brown? My local Atlantic never looks like the Bahamas, but is more blue when it is warm. I always heard water is reflects the color of the sky ..or some such ..but a you can almost tell 55f from 40f by change of color.

I lived most of my life north of Chicago and went to school in Minneapolis during the Ice Ages but it seems I was under vanity's misimpression it was my 'core' that needed to be kept warm to allow my feet/hands to stay warm... I hate hats. This clip written by an MD, A.M.E. from Mpls in an aviation mag I get for people who fly mostly in the bush. Jim

Iceboating -back in the day- or bike riding on really cold days, some thermals with wind pants over are wonderful. I have a pair of NIKE that are noisy but kill the windchill and are loose enough to not make the fleece underneath feel clammy. ..local water temps of 34-36f. prevent me from testing this with SUP.
