Technique / Re: First half hour in surf seem wasted..?!
« on: June 18, 2015, 05:55:16 AM »
Tall,  Ya, caffeine - got plan on a 2hr abstinence.  (I try and stay sparky during the day)    ...good suggestion: rather than 'go for it' ...paddle like a cruising shark outside for a while to get back in the grove.  I'd get both loosened up and re-balanced without worrying about making a drop.

Soney,  I learned to come in for a look at the ladies, some fluids and lowering the heart rate after about 45min.  It helps.

Creek,  I think you're right ...it's like I re-learn this every fricking time?!  Maybe I will try a session on the balance board before I leave.  There would be an hour spread..but an interesting experiment.    Plus the simple fact that I have only paddled about 5-6 times since last Nov.  ..so lack of time in the saddle is probably a major issue - not skill.  Hhmmmmm...

...and Whats, 'You never put a horse back in the stall if he's done something you didn't want.'  I need a fully finished wave before I rack the board to keep my head in the right place.

Cheers all...  Offshore Friday!  Jim

Adding to the pile: spare board for prospective love interest.   ..and a leash.  I prefer knee over ankle and coiled for flatwater

Area 10 ...and they're YELLOW.  I really like my 10-6.5 Nalu, but a lot of Yellow goes a short way.  (is the Red one a Fanatic with a decal on it?)

Random / Re: Buying new vs used car advice requested
« on: June 17, 2015, 02:22:07 PM »
I'll pipe in on the 'German cars are more expensive'.  Not in my experience..  We done high mileage on two MB wagons in the way past ..have a 100k+, '01 ML320 that owes us nothing...  I picked up the ML320 in Toronto because the C$ was at 85c. Since the car was built in the U.S. you can re-import without penalty, just a minor fee. (MB's US/CDN agreement says; 'No new car sales' ..but a 13mo. loaner with almost no mileage was OK)

My wife had a Boxster for 4yrs ..I kept a 997 for a couple (a clean man's car - that's not me) ..neither the Boxster nor the 997 needed anything.  The young fellow in CA who bought the 997 has put 30k on it w/o any repairs.  One from CT the other OH, having come in off lease with some remaining factory warranty.

Looks like Steve already made his choice, but I always hunt nationwide for the correct color, materials and options list.  I liked Porsche because there's tons of wonky (expensive) options that never get noticed when they come off lease.  As long as you have access to a 'specialist' then costs can be contained.  The Volvo dealer want $1k for an A/C condenser in our Wagon - my local Euro Wrench did it for $500 - three years ago.

As much as I like foreign, I have just flipped 270k on an '01 Escape.  I kneel beside my bed each night and plead for God to take it to heaven ...or Juarez, whichever is closer.

Technique / First half hour in surf seem wasted..?!
« on: June 17, 2015, 08:45:34 AM »
It's like I have been stopped by the cops ..all nervous and twitchy. Almost no matter the board size, I get the wobbles.

Not something new, I had the same issue last year...  I find that I need to 'get a little tired' to settle down and have some fun. The second half of a 2 hour go-out is always the most productive.  I thought about doing wind sprints up the dunes.. but before I exerted myself too much for little gain - I thought I check to see if any of youse may have had a similar issue.

Ya Robert, me... it's funny, I still get the occasional call usually from someone in the NW; "You got any of them left?" When Malden Mills (fleece people) went Chap. 11 ..Skeiko Rubber started bringing in cut pieces of Lycra and were able to offer a good, 5-panel rash guard for $5.  ..the death bell started to ring loud and clear.

I have had thoughts...If there was a decent resource for 4-way fleece  Naaah!   Nice of you to remember. Thanks.

Robert,  A big thanks from us in the rear bleachers.  There's a 5yr old video on starting in surf I recently sent to a friend.

Technique / Re: Analyzing Paddle Length for your Surf SUP
« on: June 12, 2015, 08:43:08 AM »
I got a new Rivera paddle and cut the width to match my Kialoa Methane ..then cut the shaft to be a couple of inches overhead.  First time in the surf in nearly seven months a couple of days ago ..had me going back in after about an hour to get my longer Methane.  The ability to 'brace' seemed easier with the longer shaft - the triangle's base is wider.

Question:  Is there a different stance I should take?  Bend at the knees or waist to fully sink the blade.  In another forum a fellow, Kolas, takes a very low stance for takeoff with his rear knee close to the deck...

Standuped - I welcome anybody who's willing to spend that much time keyboarding advice that all can use ..I don't care if it's that guy who jumps into every posting with; "I maka board you will like too!!!" ..as long as there is information in the posting.  Since there was no link, I'd bet a high percentage would not know what a cool place Nosara is vs. just his'er-her name.

C-R, Sorry to hear..  But when you said; "it stopped I kept going.."  Did the nose hit the bottom? ..take a hard look at the exact same spot on the opposite rail - any distortion.  What brand/size board is it?

It's an easy repair - if you've done it before ..like Cheat says; may be faster/easier to carry to almost any surf shop or local ding repair person if not.

Adding to what Cheat said..  Rick,  That 'Peg Leg' at :25 was held longer than I have seen in or out of a contest.

Gear Talk / Re: Please Help us decide which Nalu's fits us best...
« on: June 10, 2015, 05:03:43 AM »
D,  At one time I had both the 10-6.5 and the 11-4.  I'm 86kg...  There was no reason to keep the 11-4.  The 10-6.5 was already perfect ..11-4 just more weight and longer - easier to bang into things.

It is a nice overall board (a real quiver keeper) but I am a recent convert to the delights of 'light weight'.  I may look to replace my Nalu with a Sunova Soul.

Gear Talk / Fanatic Allwave - Sunova Skate ..similar differences.
« on: June 09, 2015, 05:51:06 AM »
I had to do a re-paint on the Allwave to prepare if for sale ..and shipping damage repairs on the Skate.  They were both curing in the Sun....  Hmmm?!

The Fanatic Allwave is a 2012/13 ..9' - 2"   ..the Sunova Skate XL is a 2014/15 ..8' - 8"  On a postal scale the AW is 26lbs/11.7k ...the Skate is 21lbs/9.5k   ...max width appears to be about 32"/81cm on both.

Measuring the width 12"/30cm back from the tip of the nose: AW = 24"/61cm  Skate = 21"/53cm

The first profile is the tip of the nose (AW-Blue ..Skate-Red)   ..the second profile the back at the mark at 12"/30cm.

____________________________

Profiles at the handle. (AW-Blue ..Skate-Red)  Roughly 32"/81cm width for both.

______________________________

Measuring width 12"/30cm from tip of the swallow tails: AW = 19"/48cm  Skate = 24"/61cm  (AW-Blue ..Skate-Red)

Other than a couple of flatwater paddles where the Allawave had always been great at simply motoring around I cannot compare them.  I do like that I sink the rails and tail of the Skate. I expect to be more comfortable on it in surf.

That is cute - funny. Computer conversion actually helps the funny.   Not quite Hitler-trip-to-Indo.  (6yrs old - below if you have not seen it)

I had not heard of Janitor? ..Sweeper, yes.  I've never seen a rash guard on the outside of rubber ..but there are 'individuals'  who wear baggies over fullsuits.
