raf - For a 10ft SUP would you suggest a 10ft leash? I don't remember what my old leash was and already tossed it. I'm surfing in Virginia Beach, Outer Banks and east coast of Florida mostly, so no Cali or Hawaii waves

I use Creatures of Leisure leashes.  Never had one break in 5 years.  The only brand we sell, and no reason for us to go looking elsewhere.

We don't have Hawaiian size surf here (or even Cali), but we get out in overhead stuff quite often.

TW - Great observation! The last time I was out before this weekend was the first week of Janaury and another SUP and I scraped. His fins went right over my tail, so I had to small dings to fix and you could see his fin marks on my pad. With what you said, I bet his fins clipped my leash also which would greatly assisted in the leash tearing. Big lesson to learn to keep inspecting and thankfully still here to learn from it. I'm also open for new leash suggestions - Dakine, Pro Lite, FCS??

You want to keep your big wave leash for certain days and keep it protected when stored. After every go out inspect it for fin gashes. Fin gash = new leash. The depth of the gash is the new overall thickness of the leash. a 1\16" gash? your leash is now 1\16' thinner.

A bump back to the top for this thread as my leash - same as the original poster - broke on Saturday while surfing in 46 degree water temps. Luckily a proner was able to grab my board and bring it back, but it could have been a bad situtation as I getting cold quick swimming to it as it was getting tossed around in the shore break.

I'll admit I have had this leash for 2 years and while I do rinse it after every use, maybe my lessson learned is I should replace the least once a year. My son prone surfs much more than I and in much bigger waves, so I think I am going to make it a habit to give him a new leash for Christmas every year.

So my my question is, should I go back to the same leash, or go to a different company? While I know there is no guarantee, Saturday really freaked me out as that is the first leash I have broken.

Thanks!

Gear Talk / Re: 10.6 vs. 11.6 for surfing waist high waves

I'm 5-7, 160 and learned to surf on a SUP on a 10-6 I got off craig's list. After 3 years on it I went to a 10-0. My shaper told me the 10-6 was really t0o big for me and he would build a 10-0 that was a little wider and thicker - this would help on choppy days as I live 2 hours from Va. Beach and often have to go when it is rough and choppy as I can't be too picky. Let's just say, he was right on the money, so I would think others are correct that you need to look more at width and thickness than going to 11-6. That's a really big board.

I ran acrosse a few very positives posts about The Palladium in Puerto Vallarta, but they seemed to be a few years old. Anyone stay there recently. Is there still a decent break infront of the resort. Looking at maybe going the first week of August with wife - thanks for any suggestions.

Just want to give a Shoutout to PonoBill - I bought the AYL 4.1 headphones off Amazon right before Christmas as I was looking for something wireless to use with my iphone 6 while doing indoor workouts. These have been great, even though I don't have much to compare them to as this is my first bluetooth setup. They synced up very well, stay in my ear while on stairmaster and treadmill and sound is very good for me. Only draw back I would say is cap is a little tough to open when needing to charge, but very minor. Well worth the $25 - thanks Bill!

Bluetooth is going through a protocol shakeup. It's overdue, and it's been kind of going on for a long time, but it's getting more consistent. the different manufacturers worked around issues and implemented their own modifications. That's why some things connect painlessly, and some are nuts.

I bought a pair of AYL 4.1 phones for 25 bucks and loved them. If I could just find them I'd still love them. They use bluetooth 4.1 which is a very big deal. You'd think a .1 release would be trivial, but this is the first iteration of the next wave of bluetooth. Amazon has them. Not only 4.1 but noise cancelling. Crazy. I'm going to buy a handful and tie them to the reading glasses I can't find.

Gear Talk / Bluetooth headphone suggestions

Looking for suggestions for bluetooth headphones to pair with my iphone for working out and for jogging. I like the over the ear models rather than the ear buds and have a smaller head. Not worried about water proof - thanks for suggestions for any that work for good vaule. I'm still in denial that technolgy works, so this blue tooth music amazes me :)

I suggest lunch at Lendy's in VB near the beach for lunch on Saturday if no water time - awesome wings and hope Kitty Hawk treats you well. Plenty of SUPers and Tim Notle there. Good dude if you get a chance to stop by his shop.

I am not a big fan of the RIU.  Way to big of a place and only flat water paddling in the bay

July is south swell time.. I am not a big fan of cerritos in the summer time.  The place is a thumping beach break on shallow sand.

I would go east to San Jose.  Obviously there is old mans and the rock in front of the surf hotel, but the whole key to getting the most fun is renting a 4 wheel drive car and going east of San Jose past punta Gorda.  Forget about the popular spots like shipwrecks, and 9 palms,  there is at least 30 breaks without a soul on them.  on the East Cape, you can SUP empty waves and let the proners hassle it out in town..

Lots of places to stay, but if you dont need to be on the water, some cool places downtown San Jose.. You will be surfing and on the beach all day long, so staying on the beach might not be a big thing..

Also, not a fan of all inclusive.  Part of the experience of Baja is the local food, like fish tacos after a good surf, or a carne asada with cold beers..

Have a good trip. You will love Baja.

Bajasurf -- What do you mean by "July is south swell time.. I am not a big fan of cerritos in the summer time." what is cerritos and is south swell good or bad? After more reading, I'm leaning hard toward the surf hotel. I will have my wife, who just likes the beach and fruity drinks and my 2 boys that prone surf - I SUP surf. Might look at renting a 4x4 for one or two to venture out, but for a rookie traveler like me, can see staying closer to the hotel most of the time. Any major negatives you can think of about staying at surf hotel. You have had some get input here on the Zone.

Still trying to figure out place to go for anniversary next Juy. A buddy was talking to me about Cabo. I read about the Surf Hotel here on the Zone, but has anyone stayed ay the Hotel Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas as was looking at all inclusive as a rookie traveler. Defintely looking for SUP surfing close by while there - thanks!
