Two really fun days with Paulette on Long Island and thankfully no damage here after Isiais left us without power for a week. My wife got one shot of me and I took a few between sessions, including some of one of our local grom rippers who seems destined for bigger things... Got to enjoy some draining heavy beach break and then some 300yd outer bar mushy bombs the following day in another spot nearby. Looking forward to playing with Teddy next week!

Hey Sano - do you have any recommendations on what I would want to use to start getting into foiling in waves with a SUP (was thinking of modifying one of my two 8'10" Sunova Speeds with a box before picking up a foil-specific board. I'm 6'3" 190lbs and a strong surfer and will probably be using it in sloppy east coast short period conditions (though I imagine I'll get foil brain and start doing it all the time)...

+1 on Nosara. It's a great area, there are a bunch of great AirBnB/VRBO's for rent there, great variety of restaurants and a fun Surfer/Yogi vibe to the town, though definitely not the high-end spa experience you might want from a south shore Maui or Ritz Carlton Residences in Punta Mita. You aren't going to get skunked on waves and there are also reef breaks both to the South (Right point very close by) and north (left point within an hr) that light up when the Guiones beach break gets too large. Just make sure you rent a proper 4WD vehicle as getting around can be challenging. The Blue Zone folks are even foiling as well as SUPing now if that's your bag. Can't wait to get back there.

Thanks for the review APPST. I've been thinking about getting in but have been holding off for a while. Now that Summer is here with small waves and long rollers that tend to not break around the inlet near me it seems like this could be the right size setup for me (6'3", 190, no issues with winter gear on a 110ltr board).

The wedges are on average about an inch narrower than the SP's (inc the 25) If I wouldnt sink anything smaller I may have gone with an SP. My weight may change but the waves i ride dont. and i simply cant fit a 30+ in wide board into hollow NJ beachbreak no matter how much I weigh. So the board had to change not me or the waves.
That's an interesting point around the width - my Flow is just under 30" wide but a narrower board would definitely help in some steeper days here in LI. I'm just above 190lbs at 6'3" so I'm hoping that the 105ltr 7'11" SP25 fits the bill and is stable enough. Btw - how long did it take to get the board after you ordered it?

Awesome - stoked you picked up one of the GenRation boards!
I've been looking at one myself for a while as my wife is attempting to commandeer my 8'4" 110Ltr Sunova Flow. What made you go with the Wedge vs either of the SP boards? I was thinking of picking up a 7'11" 105Ltr SP25 as I think that would work well in East Coat Long Island beach break.

Glad you scored Rick! Yeah - hope the water warms up soon, can't wait to get into some thinner rubber. I did surf without a hood on Saturday - the last few Saturday's have been great in Long Island, but I'm pretty shocked about the crowds that have been heading to the beach and not really following distancing guidelines while hanging out in beach chairs. Thankfully the break I go to is further away than most of the crowd is willing to travel. I like the approach Hawaii is taking, but I doubt that will catch on here come Summer. Stay safe bud.
Btw - do you have board short-sized version of those Genration Sunova boards once the water warms up?

I remember a little Zoner meetup & Sunova Demo a few years back in some pretty stiff offshores in Cookie's backyard that Rick organized vi a Island Surf & Sail. The owner took a video of the session and there are a few drop-ins in heavy wind towards the end. The wave at 3:13 which is the technique I usually use to get into a wave that I might miss which involves using my legs to pump the board to get that last push into the wave. There is also a shot at 3:50 showing the potential danger of high-winds and flying boards. Though I've been trying to get out and get a session now and then amid Corona since it's pretty easy to social distance further out on the island where I am, I think I'm going to hold off on paddling out in really stiff offshores even though I know I can usually handle it. A board to the head or another part of the body requiring a few stitches is the last thing I think our hospital system needs right now.

He wasn't the only one out surfing an empty lineup. Check out the Surfline rewind cam and you'll see several others out catching waves earlier. It's looks like they were called in from the beach by lifeguards but he certainly wasn't the only one. He was the one they sent out a couple boats to capture. I wonder how many cyclists rode by the beach during this takedown... I understand why they are closing beaches as first point gets incredibly crowded but if they're going to lockdown beaches and the ocean, they might as well lockdown sidewalks and parks from pedestrians roads from cyclists. In France you need a printed sheet outlining where and why you are out and about.

Sounds like a great event and cause but wondering how much participation you're going to get holding it in winter conditions. Most of the charity races and paddles in the Northeast are during warmer months and it's challenging enough to get people to do it in warmer waters. How many hard-core winter paddlers are in the NY Metro or surrounding areas are there around who would be up to travel for this? I only paddle downwinders and surf in the winter on rare occasions knowing that I have hot water to come back to right after I get our of the water (thanks to my RinseKit). Why not try to hold the event during Summer months outside of the school calendar (and weekend kids sports)?

Ben Gravy is one of the most stoked guys I've ever met. Spent a week surfing with him and Chuck Patterson in PR a couple years back and had an amazing time - even made a couple small appearances on his Vlog. What was interesting today was how many people were at Lido (described on Surfline as Epic) vs Gilgo and LB. Even at the end of the day on the way back from work there wasn't anyone out at Gilgo.

Didn't get a chance to get out yesterday due to work. Had a small window this am so I went to check out Gilgo - the angle isn't as good for the wind as Lido and LB but the size was massive - Heaving double-overhead sets.... and no one out. Probably should have thought better of it but went ahead and paddled out and spent an hour battling against 30mpg+ gusting winds and a fair amount of chop. Took a few on the head and had to jump off some drops but was finally rewarded with one of the steepest drops I've ever taken and was able to ride it out clean. No witnesses other than the plovers... took a couple snaps on the way out. The swell is going to drop tomorrow but winds should make it a fun day.

Great tips on this thread FRP! I've been wanting to go to Tofino for years as I've mostly only been in the area in deep winter for trips to Whistler. As luck would have it I just started working for a Canadian company HQ'd in Vancouver. I'm planning to go there for business in late September so will try extend the trip to include the weekend in Tofino. Seems like a fair amount of AirBnB's are available (hotels are pretty pricey) and the ability to rent performance boards from Tofino Paddle Surf is a big plus. I'll probably bring my Patagonia R2 and reluctantly will pack booties and my hooded vest.

Love Punta de Mita and the area north of PV. Stayed at a great surf hotel (Quinta Del Sol) just outside expensive gated hotel area as well as further north in Chacala where my cousin has a place a few years back. Glad you scored when you were there. My last trip only had a couple of good days with larger surf but as you said La Lancha is pretty consistent no matter the swell. There's also a great left point a little further north from San Pancho accessible only by boat - won't name it here but you can PM me for details.

Whoa - That's a pretty gnarly shot of the cape Rick! In my neck of the woods in NY it was pretty bumpy and disorganized with the W wind but there were some solid sets rolling through. I was out with one other guy - last day I'm going to go without booties - couldn't feel my feet walking back. Glad you scored some and can't believe you trunked it...
