I was thinking the upper one would be placed in a similar location as a foil drive: ~8” under the board, clamped on like the foil drive is but protruding forward so the balance point stays the same when it comes out… the 1095 will have me looking for a place for my 980, maybe I’ll play around with the idea. Maybe 750 down low, 980 up top!?

I’ve sometimes wondered about something similar: a clamp-on-the-mast foil closer to the board, to help get up with a small main foil, otherwise it’s out of the water. Faster, more efficient, harder to over foil, less abrupt/consequential touch downs.

Sounds like he feels a similar thing. And the 5.2 and 6 have three handles, 4.7 and below have two. But it seems like the armie control bar should work too.

No windsurfing, but lots of sailing. It might be that xply doesn’t deform like other wings? And yes, out of forearm necessity I’m pinching most of time unless it’s light. But it doesn’t flutter at all, and enough power left to stay up, this is going upwind btw where pressures are greater. I’ve found with hands back the sail wants to over-sheet too much.

First session after the holidays and adding rust to trying to learn a new wing doesn’t help, but I managed much higher angles than I’ve ever done. But I’m still convinced the 4.7 at least has its back handle too far back when it’s over powered. I ordered an Armstrong mini boom thing before my session and I was feeling like it will be appreciated. I didn’t feel the same way about the 3.6 and the 6, which I still haven’t used, has three handles.

I haven’t used a purpose-made loop yet, but rather simple random ~7mm cord leftover from climbing. I find having floppy line is easy it slide back and forth as you play the sheet as it were. It also doesn’t hurt much when it whips you in the face while pumping, if you forget to hold it with one hand.

I might put a flag on it, and a box to hold an anchor and rode, since I might use it just to take me to breaks that I paddle into. I’m thinking of using my 750 upside down, maybe shim the front of the mast base, since I’m not currently using it yet for anything else…but I like the bridle to the bottom of the mast idea….

Has anyone tried to do this with an efoil like Damien Leroy?

He flipped his fuse front to back, but for my takuma it seems easier to flip it upside down. Any reason why it wouldn’t work that way? I’m planning to use it to get a lot of pumping practice in. Eventually tie into waves when I know I can pump back out.

I think in winter in Maine a harness becomes more critical, and thinner handles make it easier. I’d like to see lobster mitts with 2mm palms but thicker elsewhere. I size them big to ensure blood flow. Last winter I assumed I wouldn’t be able to do it based in my experience surfing, where if there was wind I’d get cold. But there is less resting winging vs surfing, so it wasn’t too bad.

One other comment about pumping onto foil: the last time I did so before the holidays and on my third session I think, I randomly tried just board pumping. I think because of the sail’s forward drive, it really took advantage of every reduction in friction, so after just a couple of unweightings, I was off. If there was enough pressure to take off like a plane I wouldn’t have noticed it. It was a puff, but not a huge one and I was using the 3.6.  I’m pretty sure it was a new phenomenon for me.

I was just on nice hike with my kids and parents, but when we crossed a bridge over a smooth but fast river I wasn’t with them anymore. I was inventing a new sport: river foiling. Get on foil with a doubled line, pump around down steam with one end of the cord coiling it on the go. Go as far as you can, repeat.

Living in Maine, but grew up sailing in RI. Started climbing in college in AZ. But the ocean was calling, and I got back into surfing, but my back had issues that SUPing helped, so that planted a seed of doing something different.  I’d been thinking about borrowing my father-in-laws old windsurfing gear, but was never inspired, thought about getting into kite surfing, but where I go the launching seemed problematic. At the beginning of the pandemic I discovered wing foiling on YouTube, and I was like Vader:” that’s it!” and ordered a kit. The first time I rode it behind the boat will forever be etched in my brain as the moment it all changed. Now when I meditate foiling is what my monkey brain goes to almost every time.

If you find a heavy front hand pull, try moving your hand back on the front handle further away from the leading edge. It opens up the leading edge a bit and balances the pull with the back hand more.

Pumping to foil is much more technical than any other wing I've tried, but once up, the wing is amazing.

I will have to try that again, but it seemed like forward was working better while I was trying to figure it out. I was so overpowered and pumping out I was just trying to survive.  With the holidays I have and will be out of the water for a while, but with time to reflect I think one of the things I’ll have to learn is to take an even finer bite out of the wind than I’ve been using. Maybe with deeper sails there’s a more gradual power progression, but with new sails it’s more abrupt, like a HA foil. But yes, in flight it’s like an arrow, super stable.

Pumping felt very awkward, but I think that’s because the airush sails are low psi(6m@4psi!), so the feedback loop will have to be relearned.

Hi everyone, this is my first post.

I recently switched out my original quiver of gen-1 airush wings for the swx 3.6/4.7/6.  I haven’t tried much else besides on the beach, and my skills have gotten as far as jibes most of the time and foot switches half the time, and I’ve only had a few sessions, so my opinion is to be considered accordingly.

Compared to the deep-drafted airush wings, these are fast. I find them to be hard to hold on to, in other words pumpy on the forearms. This is mostly due to the wide handle size, and the fact that I live in Maine and am wearing thick mitts. I want to make minimalist handle covers for winter. Other reasons could be the increased apparent wind, and the direct feel. Winter here is also known as harness season, and they have no attachment points, but I’ve found it works to go from the front of the rear handle to 1/3-1/2 up from the back of the front handle. It seems like the center of effort or balance point is far forward on these flat sails so on the 4.7 I felt like the rear handle was too far back, since I felt I needed my front hand all the way up the front handle, which made it hard to hold on to. But the harness line attached there acted as a trap for my hand so that’s nice.

Pumping them is definitely different, with one difference being that the tips seem more likely to hit the water (weight?), so starting with a more upward pump seems to work. That said, the only time so far I haven’t felt overpowered was with the 3.6, in wind that I’d never have considered my old 4. 15-20 maybe? So I’m wondering if the increased weight might be offset once I figure them out. I haven’t used the 6 yet, but I’m curious to find out how that one will work.
