Thanks for the tips. Wow, I didn't know you could get giant blocks!

Looks like maybe getting a US blank for Pearson Arrow for a 12' SUP and sawing it in half would be the best way to go outside of ordering a giant block - garage space is severely limited. The surfboard blanks seem to thin and wouldn't stack well to glue together.

If anyone on this forum is in the area and is doing this themselves, PM me and we can go in together on it.

I’m looking to shape a board in the spring using a vacuum to make a super light board to my specs. (5’0”, 75L and under 10lbs with inserts). I think a wing board would be way more forgiving than a short board in many ways.

I’d need an EPS blank or two at least 5’ long, 5” thick and 26” wide.

Surfboard blanks are around 100$ and the vacuum and all the gear would put me under what a new wing board costs and future boards would be sub $500 to build myself, I would hope.

Does anyone know where to source this? Maybe get a giant SUP blank and cut it in half? All the blank companies in CA have nothing thick and short. Gluing two blanks together would add a lot of weight I would think.

Greenlight surf supply has them but they are located in NJ and shipping is $300.

I’m not too far from Santa Cruz, CA.

I know a lot of folks had boards made by a certain famous winger in SF, and Clark makes them in HMB, but I don’t know where anyone gets blanks!  ???

@ponobill Sounds good if you don’t like money or want the absolute perfect wing for the conditions.  ;)

I’ve had a good spring/ summer on a two wing 6m and a 4.5m. Certainly didn’t miss any sizes in between. Could have used a 3m during a storm.
Since percentages are weird, the 4.5 is 25% smaller than the 6m and the 6m is 33% bigger than the 4.5m.
If there are tiny whitecaps I can use either but if there is any doubt I always size up. Lots of whitecaps or a rising forecast and I go smaller. Pretty simple.

I’m thinking of going aluula and getting either a 6 and a 4 or a 5.5 and a 4 as a two wing quiver as they have better top and bottom range.

6 and 4.5 is 33% bigger and 25% smaller.
5.5 and 4m is 37% bigger and 27% smaller, so a bigger gap.
6 and 4 is 50% bigger and 33% smaller so much bigger gap.

If aluula has a wider range the 5.5 and 4m should have similar or greater overlap as my current 6 and 4.5, and have much better top end. True 10-30knot range. Maybe the 6 and 4 would work but I’d be stretching out the middle ground a lot and that would be a $4k mistake!

A 3m would be necessary for over 30knots so if you see that a lot you’d need a three wing quiver.

I don't know. When I was researching what company to go with they were in the top few. Since I've been paying attention for about a year, they have been near the leaders in regards to high aspect foils, with an 7.9AR 1040 that has been out for some time, or a 914cm 8.4AR foil. Not to mention the fact that you can put the kite foils on the same fuse (I think). It's enough to make me confident if I went with them I wouldn't get left in the dust.

I'm surprised people aren't talking about them more. Maybe people who ride naish are on the water too much to use computers...

They have just become available here.

Any information or comparison between the 899 and 999?

Any insights Dwight?

Where is "here"? It's not on the website for ordering, did you contact them directly?

A few videos of people ripping on the Armie 725, I hope the 799 turns as well!

111

Without the shim in the 420 tail the 999 should hold down well in Triple Overhead ++.  2 - 20 feet.

This was the stuff of dreams until now.

I ride the 420, just got the 375. No wind… you mean the 375 has more of an angle so it will force the nose of the board up more than the 420?

I was looking at them and by my eye they should be similar in terms of drag, similar thickness and chord, just less width for the 375. I didn’t plan on what you describe which would be a high speed issue. I’ve had the 999 up to 24 mph with the 999 and it was steady in flat water, not much more front foot pressure than going 19mph.

Very interesting stuff. If there isn't much to be gained on double skin, then maybe the Aluula/Spectra/Dyneema material will lead to reductions in leading edge diameter and that will be the main performance gain? The smaller leading edge will result in less drag --> more efficiency?

My 6m Duotone Echo v2 goes upwind pretty poorly looking at my gps tracks. I'm a sit down sailboat racer who knows how to go upwind.
My 4.5m Duotone SLICK goes upwind much better. Maybe ~110 degrees on different tacks, hard to say without a protractor.

Do you think the difference is the smaller leading edge of the 4.5m? Or is it the wing outline or the draft or something like that?

I noticed a couple times people on a different brand 6m wing pointing higher than me - ozone I think. I was riding ART-999 and a Mike's Lab foil, so it's not what's under the water. Anyone on an Aluula wing and compare their upwind angles to a dacron wing of the same size?

I'm curious about double skinned wings - think kitefoiling "foil" kites, but no need for the rammed air because we have an inflatable leading edge (and we need one since we have no bridles to maintain shape). It seems relatively easy to do, just put a thin canopy on the handle side of the wing as well, doesn't necessarily need to be connected at the trailing edge. Handles/boom can be where they are now, just come out through some reinforced holes the inner canopy, since it wouldn't be any further out that the main strut anyway.

Obviously would weight a bit more, but maybe you could get away with a lighter material and sill not have much flapping due to the double skins.

“ Tube-kite profile creates more lift than a Soft-kite profile in stationary flight conditions, but the drag is higher in low angles of attack.” So upwind the double skin wins, but more grunt in the single skin.

America's Cup Boats use this https://youtu.be/-M54CVWotvc?t=86

Also see the IWS inflatable sailboat sail, supposedly far more efficient that a similar sized regular sail and less heeling force compared to lift.

AKA "wing sail" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wingsail

Of course, kite foil racers use "foil" kites which are far more efficient than leading edge inflatable (LEI) kites, which are like our wings. Ozone seems to be the leader here.

I'll give my shipping address to anyone and am happy to test!  ;D

Hmm I guess we'll have to wait and see unless someone can tell us.

I see at the end of the catalog p.36 the screw guide only has an 870 as the smallest ART.   :o

I don’t envy axis having to figure out which wings to release and keeping it simple. Tons of people want smaller higher aspect wings (me) yet I think the 999 is too small for many wingers now, I’ve seen two for sale in the Bay Area where people said they were too small.

115
Nice. I can’t edit my post. Axis catalogue is definitely a better source.

1160 is 1387cm^2        9.97AR
999 is 1038 cm^2         9.9AR
899 is 850cm^2 actual  9.76AR
799 is 730cm^2 actual  9.05

I’m stoked on the small one to complement my 999, but I already have a 640cm high aspect foil. I think I need to polish and re anodize my fuselage which is all scratched up and oxidized to get the most out of these small fast guys. (Please make a carbon fuse)

Retitle the thread. I found some info.

Thefoilingcollective.com/product/axis-black-art-front-wing/

870mm 837cm^2
999mm 1038cm^2
1160mm 1385cm^2

All around 9+ AR

I just ordered a progressive 375 tail for my 999, hopefully it’s good for a smaller ART as well. The 837 is the size I’ve been after, should glide amazing but also turn well.

Axis please add me to the research team ;)

I just had a session and was thinking about this. I find when I put my rear foot further back and more center where my rear strap would be (it’s usually a bit on the downwind side of the board and more forward) I lean over more and yaw less.

Makes me wonder if this is the reason kitefoil racers have a RIDICULOUSLY wide stance - to be in a better position for optimizing upwind and preventing mast ventilation? Makes sense that wingers would have this problem with our relatively slow speed we have our feet closer together and get away with it unless we’re hauling ass upwind.

Just a bunch of guesses…

118
Happens to me on my art 999 and 420 tail wing (tail sanded a lot on the trailing edge and half a winglet broke off) with the 86cm carbon mast.
I’m 77kg.

I’ll try and wing with more and less yaw. I’m mostly going upwind to the max so I can ride downwind.

As a beginner I would ride flat and try and yaw my way upwind. Now I ride more canted over. Front foot straps. I feel with a back foot strap it might change my yaw amount, but I prefer to ride without one unless I’m jumping.

I’d love to know a solution.

119
Please link any info you have. I can’t find them on the axis site.

I feel like it’s efficient and gets to its max fast. Less efficient foils can be “pushed harder” because they need more force to reach their limit but basically that means that you can use less pressure once you’re on foil. That’s my theory anyway… I initially thought it was unstable at its max, but as I’m getting used to it I can maintain higher speeds longer.

I was told by the axis guys that if I wanted faster and better turning to go with the hps 830. I would imagine the glide and pump and efficiency are the trade offs. I think the 10AR wings make sense at this size and lower, above it the maneuverability suffers due to the wingspan. I.e the Armstrong 1125 vs 925 and folks preferring the smaller one for general riding.
