More backside on the SIMSUP:

That image isn't working.

And what about backside? Can you jam a deep hard BACKSIDE BOTTOM TURN on a mini simms in head high + conditions without tracking or do you have to back off a bit because of that wide tail?

Do the mini simms get squirely or track in overhead conditions with that big ol wide tail?

I want to build a mini Simmons SUP which means it probably won't be any longer than 8' and about 31" wide X 4 1/2" thick. I've done a lot of glassing with polyester and some epoxy but I want the board to be really light so will need to go with EPS and epoxy.

I'm in San Diego so I guess the next step will be to contact Mitchs for the blank but I was wondering if there are any  online sources for the resin and glass that might cost less?

If I wanted to build a "normal" board then I'd continue buying slightly used boards off of Craigslist that I can easily sell without a loss when I'm done with them. But this board I want to build is super weird which means its not readily available on the used market and I really don't want to fork over $1200 minimum on a new board.

I'll check that out. These guys seem to be making some really sophisticated mini simms sups: http://www.original-simsup.com/

Good info on the Phoenix Simmons/sup

Anyone know how much it would cost in materials to shape and glass my own SUP? I used to shape and glass my own surfboards a long time ago and I'm thinking of making my own mini Simmons type SUP. So I'm interested in the cost of the blank and all glassing materials and good sources for that stuff too. Cost matters.

Thanks  :D

How much do you weigh?

Not exactly a mini-simmons, but my 6'9" "wombat" (Gong Mutant 2011) is the board I had the more sessions on in 2011... even though I received it only in September!!!
- Length : 6’9 = 206 cm
- Width : 31’ 1/2 = 80.0 cm
- Thickness : 4 5/8" = 11.7 cm
- Volume : 116 Litres
- One foot off nose : 24 1/8" = 61.3 cm
- One foot off tail : 23 5/8" = 60.0 cm

I would have never thought I would have so much fun on this low rockered, wide and thick tail design. The speed I get - even for my 100kg - in slow waves is exhilarating, I get bored now on my 9'6" "longboard" SUP I was using previously for small, slow waves. Of course on head high waves they become too fast for my abilities, and do not like a lot chop (at such short lengths, timing is everything for the take off, chop will mess your timing). But the short length is what gives you the speed and makes them fun.

The parallel rails and full outline make it surprisingly easy to paddle for its size. Much easier that my pointed nose 7'10".

I guess you can widen the tail a bit, and reduce a lot the aft rails to get more control in faster waves, but loosing acceleration and speed in slower waves.

Gear Talk / Re: Boards do leak and slowly get heavier....

When I windsurfed on Maui in the 90's and thrashed my board while surfing it would suck up water like a sponge. To get the water out, or as much as I could, I used to drill a 1/4" wide hole in the nose and tail and take it out to some guy in the jungle and that for $10 would spin the board super fast for a few minutes on this contraption that was basically an electric motor with a rack to strap the board on that would use centrifugul force to blow the water out of the ends. I'm not sure how well that thing would work on the tight closed cell EPS used now but it worked really well for the older EPS foam that had a lot of space between the foam balls. Sadly though, and in spite of the spinning, each time I got a ding or something that let water in (like maybe the footstrap inserts), my board would always gain just a little more weight.

Has anyone tried this method of spinning with the newer closed cell foam boards? If so, did it work?

I've been surfing forever but just started standup paddle surfing in September and I haven't been this stoked about surfing in years! I've gone from a 9'-10" Stu Kenson quad to a 9'-4" Walden Magic since I started.

I've seen a few David Craig SUP's in San Diego lately ranging from 7'-6" to 9'-6" with very similar outlines and they all looked like they would be awesome in the waves. Seriously, I think David Craig really gets it as far as surfing on these things because most of the SUP's I've seen kind of make me wonder if they are shaped by people who actually surf. Anyway, I was curious if anyone here would know how a similarly sized David Craig SUP might compare as far as surfing characteristics with a Walden 9'-4" Magic SUP?

Thanks

Have you ever seen anything like that? I also want to build something for the back to put my mountain bike in if I don't get a Class C.

1841
A Class C motorhome is the kind that usually has the van front end and a section over the cab for sleeping.

Hey thanks for lots of good ideas! Yes it would be white for sure and I'm thinking it will open from the back so there is less area exposed for possible leakage and also because I'll probably install solar panels on top of it.

I'm going to be traveling extensively and want to carry and store my SUP's (12' and 9'-10") and surfboards on the top of a Class C motorhome but I want them out of the elements and reasonably secure from theft so I was thinking of building a big white low profile rectangular locking box for the boards.

Does anyone have any ideas for building something like this? Have you seen anything like this? Any links to photos of a box like this?

Thanks

Steve
