I'd go with 5 boxes cuz adding a little trailer can add a lot of stability in bigger surf.

Nice looking fins Larry! I considered a center fin box with Joe but it seemed unnecessary considering the width of my board. I should try smaller fins to allow it to "slide" a bit more in the small stuff.
Anyhow, I plan to talk to Joe about a shorter design when he gets back from Costa Rica in the spring. A quad setup looks interesting.

Only 8 pounds...WOW! I understand why it feels so lively.

What size would you recommend for me? I weigh about 190. I've been surfing shortboards forever and I'm a still a pretty darn decent surfer. I just started stand up surfing two months ago on a 9-10, then a 9-4 Walden Magic (in perfect condition and for sale by the way - wink, wink). I'm currently riding a 9'-6" McTavish http://www.surfindustries.com/surfboards/mctavish_sup.php that is 29.5" wide X 4.5" thick with 150 liters volume. What length/thickness of a Sim would be equivalent in volume to my McTavish? Also, do you ever miss having a deck pad?

Thank you

Yes, 8 lbs. is super light. 6,6,4oz. glass on deck and 6,4oz. glass with "X" cloth on bottom. We used 1 lb. foam on this one since I'm very gentile on my boards. Generally we use 1.5 lb. foam. We glossed and polished the deck with 400 grit sanded gloss satin bottom. I use the board without a deck pad and use wax.

Your sim sup looks awesome dude, so forget a PM and tell us all about it here in a post!  ;D

Here are some questions to get you started...

1) How much do you weigh?
2) Did they tell you how much volume it has?
3) How long have you been sup surfing?
4) Does it have 'S' rails?
5) Was it a custom board or off the shelf?
6) How much did it cost out the door?

Thanks!

Yeah, I've probably watched that video ten times so far and that guy just SHREDS! Before he hits the water there is a quick 2 second shot of him standing next to his board in the grass. If you pause it you will notice that instead of the typical big thick clunky rail his board has a thinned out "S" or step rail rail which to me makes so much sense for making these SUP's more responsive in the waves.

Yeah you're right about the nice views you get from standing up. Its amazing how much sooner you can spot a set and paddle to it...and its great to see all the fishies down there too!

Hey, how come this post is about surfboards when this is a SUP forum?

1807
Are the boards with the carrying handle on the deck supposed to be micro SUP's or regular surfboards?  ???

1808
Thanks

Nope, you would be lookin for "bourdfisher"

paddle on..

Huh... and quit the mother sport!
Not as long as i'm able.
Seems to help with my PR in the lineup too, doing both.

Is that you Brent?

In case you guys haven't seen this yet, its a guy in Brazil absolutely tearing it up on a SUP in fun waves. This guy is light years ahead of any other SUS action I've seen so far. You can see how much his paddle is an integral part of his surfing. His aggressively powerful style reminds me of how Ben Aipa used to shred on a shortboard back in the day...

For those of you that still regular surf on shortboards but also SUS...

I was wondering what the adjustment is like to go from regular surfing on a shortboard one day and then do the SUS thing the next day? Does the SUP in waves feel ridiculously clunky after surfing a shortboard or do you adjust fairly quickly?

You need to expand your question:  "What have you given up for Stand Up Surfing?"

Oh, great question:
1) Prone Surfing.  Since sold 4 boards.
2) 5 waves per hour, for 15 waves per hour
3) Windsurfing.  I can get the same stoke in 90 minutes and be home or at work before 9 am.
4) Running.  I get enough exercise from SUP.
5) Mowing the lawn.  Just get a lawn got and don't miss your weekend session
6) Sloth for Stoke.  You can SUP surf EVERY Day
7) Most of my other hobbies.  Not enough time for them AND  3 kids, dog, job & wife

Got it! I'm on my 4th SUP since I started 2 months ago and have already sold 3 of my surfboards.

Guilty as charged.
25+ years in the water.
I break out the shorty once in awhile.  But prone paddling gives me too much neck pain from past injuries. :(

Yeah, me too. I get back and neck pain from surfing and even on a crappy day of SUSing my body feels good and surfed-out as if I've had a good work out.

SHREDDING! Thanks for sharing!

So do you think its the challenge of doing something new that has you so stoked on SUS? Or physically? I know its been extremely humbling for me to go out there and kook out.
