Some questions for all you sup surfers...

1) What kind of leash are you using and how long and thick is it?
2) How long is the board you're using it with?

My answers...

1) Dakine "Longboard Series" 10' X 1/4" solid leash.

2) I'm using it on an 8' sup.

Thanks

I don't have a shaping room but I'm pretty sure I'm going to make my next board. It seems like most of you on this forum that shape your own boards have a cool setup with the dark walls and strategically placed lights, etc. but I was curious if there are any backyard shapers here who shape without a conventional shaping room?

Pro Box Larry or anyone else...  Please sell me on the reasons why I should convert to Pro Box? Advantages and disadvantages please.

Thanks

This guy from Australia says to set the fin boxes parallel to the stringer and 90 degrees to the board (i.e. no toe and no cant) on high performance wave sups. Of course this is counter to how everyone sets the boxes but maybe thats just a throwback to how its been done with regular surfboards? His contention is that cant produces lift but the short wave sup with its big wide tail doesn't need more lift. Toeing, he says, makes the board turn better, but he says we don't need that because we use the paddle to help us turn. Bottom line: Straight placed fins result in a much faster board. I was wondering if anyone here is surfing a board with the fins set straight like this? What do you think?

Thanks

I haven't shaped or glassed my own board in years but I'm thinking of building my own wave sup. I'm a recent convert to sup surfing and on my 5th board since I started last fall. I get seriously humbled every time I go out but totally stoked and have some ideas for a board I'd like to build. Im thinking of building because I remember the stoke and satisfaction I felt riding boards I made that surfed well (and i remember a few bad experiments too!). Dropping $1100 to $1500 on a new board I may or may not like is too expensive for me so building should be an option to save money too.

The board I build will probably be around 8' and COST MATTERS but so does performance (i.e. light weight) which means I'll be wanting to use materials that strike a balance between light weight, affordability and durability.

Anyway, i have lots of questions and would really appreciate your input please...  :)

1) What kind of blank should I get?

2) Can I use the same tools to shape that blank that I used to shape polyurethane foam? (hand saw, power planer, surform, sandpaper, etc.)

3) Since I'll be glassing with epoxy, do I still need a stringer? If so, why?

4) Where is the cheapest source to buy blanks? (I'm in San Diego)

5) What kind of paint are you using to spray the blank? Acrylic in a spray can?

6) Is everyone still using E and/or S cloth? If so, what weight and typically how many layers?

7) Who makes the cheapest and most user friendly non-yellowing epoxy resin?

8 Does a one stop source for everything exist that is also cheaper than others?

9) How much did your last board cost you to build for everything excluding deckpad and fins?

10) Do you have any cool money saving tips for making a board?

Sorry for so many questions but no doubt I'll have more so thanks in advance.

I ordered an 8' sim sup from L41 in Santa Cruz that should be ready soon. Is anyone driving from Santa Cruz to San Diego soon (or at least closer to San Diego) that could bring my new board with them? I could pay you for your trouble.

Thank you.  :)

My ears are 90% to 95% closed due to surfers ear and was wondering if anyone has had this surgery done in the San Diego area and if you were happy with the results? I would also like to know who the doctor was please.

Thanks

SUP General / SUP SURFERS: Are you using a shorter paddle now when surfing?
« on: December 20, 2012, 10:41:26 AM »
Are you using a paddle in the surf that is shorter than the conventional 8" longer than your body? If so, how long is it in relation to your body?

Thanks

I've been regular surfing since I was a kid and just started stand up surfing a couple months ago and I'm totally hooked on this thing. The strange thing is that I've never been much into longboards. Anyway, I was wondering how many long-time hard core surfers on this forum have totally quit regular surfing to do stand up surfing only? And if you have quit regular surfing, what is it about SUS that made you quit the other?

Thanks

Anyone know how much it would cost in materials to shape and glass my own SUP? I used to shape and glass my own surfboards a long time ago and I'm thinking of making my own mini Simmons type SUP. So I'm interested in the cost of the blank and all glassing materials and good sources for that stuff too. Cost matters.

Thanks  :D

I've been surfing forever but just started standup paddle surfing in September and I haven't been this stoked about surfing in years! I've gone from a 9'-10" Stu Kenson quad to a 9'-4" Walden Magic since I started.

I've seen a few David Craig SUP's in San Diego lately ranging from 7'-6" to 9'-6" with very similar outlines and they all looked like they would be awesome in the waves. Seriously, I think David Craig really gets it as far as surfing on these things because most of the SUP's I've seen kind of make me wonder if they are shaped by people who actually surf. Anyway, I was curious if anyone here would know how a similarly sized David Craig SUP might compare as far as surfing characteristics with a Walden 9'-4" Magic SUP?

Thanks

I'm going to be traveling extensively and want to carry and store my SUP's (12' and 9'-10") and surfboards on the top of a Class C motorhome but I want them out of the elements and reasonably secure from theft so I was thinking of building a big white low profile rectangular locking box for the boards.

Does anyone have any ideas for building something like this? Have you seen anything like this? Any links to photos of a box like this?

Thanks

Steve
