The Shape Shack / Is EPS foam packing material ok to practice on for sealing, sanding & painting?« on: August 02, 2015, 12:14:41 PM »
I have some EPS foam that came out of a microwave oven box. (Its those EPS foam pieces that are formed to protect the microwave in the box.) I was wondering if I practiced sealing that EPS with spackle, and then sanding the spackle, and then painting it with acrylic paint would be similar to doing the same with the 1 or 1 pound EPS that I'd use to shape a board with? If it's not the same, or at least similar, then I won't waste my time doing this.

Gear Talk / Can anyone compare the ride of the 2014 8-6 JP Surf verses the 2015 8-6 JP Surf?« on: July 29, 2015, 01:03:54 PM »
I surfed a 2014 8-6 JP Australia Surf last week and really liked it, but I saw at the JP website that the 2015 8-6 Surf has been totally redesigned with a more pulled in nose, thinner rails, 1/8" thicker, and what JP calls a more "progressive rocker." In spite of the thinner rails and pulled in nose, they were still able to add 3 more liters of volume to it. (2014 = 110 liters verses 2015 = 113 liters)
I'm wondering if anyone has surfed BOTH the 2014 and the 2015 8-6 Surfs? If so, I have some questions, please... 1) DRIVE: I really liked how the 2014 has a wide sweet spot for turning and that I could move forward and drive it. Has the increased rocker on the 2015 narrowed the sweet spot for turning? 2) STABILITY & PADDLING: Does the pulled in nose and more rocker on the 2015 make it less stable to stand on and slower to paddle than the 2014? 3) SPEED: Has the increased rocker in the 2015 slowed the board down while trimming? In other words, when trimming, does the 2015 model require more pumping to maintain speed than last years model? 4) Any other thoughts on the differences between them will be greatly appreciated. Thanks P.S. JP's seem kinda rare in the US so I think I'll do the same post at Seabreeze. 1st IMAGE: 2014 JP 8-6 Surf: 2nd IMAGE: 2015 JP 8-6 Surf with pulled in nose, thinner rails, increased rocker, and approx 1/8" thicker: 36
The Shape Shack / Anyone interested in using my numbers to plug into Shape 3DX for my new board?« on: July 24, 2015, 01:51:56 PM »
I have a board I want to build for myself and was wondering if anyone would be interested in plugging in all the numbers I have for an 8'-6" design into Shape 3DX? If so, how much would you charge me for this?
I haven't decided yet if I'll have just the rocker cut and shape the board myself or have the entire board machine shaped. Either way, I'll need whatever file(s) the foam cutter and/or CNC shop needs. (I have the FREE version of Shape 3DX.) I understand your time is valuable, but full disclosure here... I'm a CHEAP bastard with a goal to build an awesome board with quality materials as inexpensively as possible. With that goal in mind, the cost of everything matters, so please, no hard feelings if I decline your offer because your price doesn't fit into the parameters of my intended goal. Fair enough? Good. And if it's too expensive to outsource this, then I'll just have to take the time to figure out the program myself. Thanks. 37
Gear Talk / Has anyone made their own board bag for day us?« on: July 13, 2015, 08:31:12 PM »
I've seen the DIY board boxes some zoners have built for traveling, but has anyone made their own board bag for day use? You know, just something to strap on your roof racks and go like any other day bag.

The Shape Shack / Is there a method for glassing 28"+ wide sups w/ cloth that's 27" to 30" wide?« on: May 22, 2015, 04:27:30 PM »
In this thread http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,27149.15.html we are discussing lay ups and glassing schedules and this question came up...
Is there a super-duper secret technique for glassing 28"+ wide SUP's with cloth that's only 27" to 30" wide? Or do you just buy the 40" to 43" wide stuff and end up with a ton of waste? Thanks. 41

Travel, Trips, Destinations / WANTED: Location independent hubs with good uncrowded surf!« on: May 04, 2015, 03:28:15 PM »
I know places like Chiang Mai, Saigon, Barcelona, etc. are hubs where location independent entrepreneurs/digital nomads congregate because living is cheap there and the internet is good, but...
I'd like to know what locations around the world have cheap living, decent internet, and lots of GOOD UNCROWDED SURF. Know of any? Thanks 43
Technique / How do you kick your board through the lip of big waves when paddling out?« on: April 29, 2015, 11:25:15 AM »
At 3:20 in this video you will see one of the Vas brothers kick his board through a Nias lip while paddling out. It's a functional move I used a few times this winter when it was big. My concern is getting hit by the board though. So I was thinking that the key would be to kick the board slightly to the side to avoid having it slam back down on you in case the board didn't punch through the lip. What are your experiences?
