You were thinking about installing handles….    A friend of mine way back was a really good half man (ha, AKA kneeboarder). Anyway, he had a couple kneeboards made with handles. I wish I had photos but what he did was to scoop out the foam on the deck rail where he wanted the handles and using fiberglass rope he formed the handles. Sounds funky but it was actually really clean the way he did it. That was with polyester resin but with epoxy the handles could also be made using carbon tubes (broken sup paddle?) or PVC pipe.

Some say epoxy won’t bond to PVC but if you heat up the PVC with a torch then the epoxy will bond. Got that idea from the West System site and it definitely works.

Both boards have a lam on the deck at the tail that says “EPS.” I put a call into SurfTech to see if they built the Laird sups with bamboo decks. Waiting for call back.
Surftech Pearson Arrow boards didn't use bamboo.  Their boards were painted.  Picture and description here:

I thought Laird got out of selling SUPs.
If you are serious about one of these boards, I would contact Bob Pearson.  His hand shaped ones are EPS.  Construction would be better than the non Surftech Laird models.

Laird did get out of selling sups. His site is still up but it says “sold out” for every board.

I called Surftech and no one there knows anything. Called a dealer that used to carry Lairds and the kid working there didn’t even know who Laird Hamilton was. Spoke to the owner of that shop later and he said “it’s hard to find good help these days.”

If I can’t find the Laird I want then I may have to build one myself. I am going to check the Shape3DX warehouse and see if I can find a similar design.

Why are these called Swim Missles? Missile I get, but where’s the swimming? Is swimming the same as prone paddling?

I have an early 10'6" Surftech Laird Pearson Arrow. I've had it over 12 years now. It is my favorite board ever. The pintail is sublime. I've tried many boards since then but this one is my all time favorite. It is beat to hell and if I can find an old one in good shape I'd buy it in a heartbeat. If you have a lead on one and you don't buy it please send me the seller's details. I've been thinking about contacting Pearson to see if he'll make a custom replica to replace my old dog in a bit lighter layup.

Ok, I will let you know. Is 10-6 the only size you’re interested in?

That top board looks like a Pearson Arrow, but without the branding.  And Laird (with and maybe without Surftech) did market Arrows under the Laird brand.

Construction wise, I recalled some issues with Laird construction and found the following:

https://www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Stand-Up-Paddle/Review/Laird-106-surfer-issues?page=1

All that's to say that maybe you should consider looking for an Arrow... people swear by them.

If you found a Surftech Laird Pearson Arrow you would avoid any construction quality issues.

Thanks for the link to Seabreeze.🤙🏼

At Lairds site https://lairdstandup.com/ all the boards have a lam on the bottom that says “Xterra Boards.” A search for “Xterra Boards” brings up a company that makes (or made) inflatable sups but nothing about making hard sups.

I’m looking for a clean performance LONGBOARD style surf SUP. Not limited to just these, but a few longboard surf SUP’s that look nice are made by Starboard, Laird, Infinity, Gong, Smik, etc.

Please let me know what you have.

Thanks everyone for your input!🤙🏼  Unfortunately for me he sold his New Deal right away. It was a really good deal so not surprising.

I’m on the hunt for a longboard sup so I did another post asking about the Laird longboard stand ups here: https://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,38486.0.html

I’m thinking of buying a used longboard surf sup again. A couple of the few designs I’m considering are the Laird Surfer and the Laird Surfer Hybrid. I had a 10’ Surfer a few years ago but it felt too big and heavy so I’m thinking of the 9’ or maybe 9’-6” this time. Look at the images below and you’ll see that the Surfer has a classic longboard style nose whereas the Surfer Hybrid came with a nose that was drawn in a bit.

So, a few questions, please…

1) I am leaning towards the Hybrid this time, but anyone have experience riding both? If so, what was the difference in how the two models performed?

2) Was the construction of the Lairds with the BAMBOO DECKS (blue Surfer below) any good?

3) Do the carbon Lairds hold up?

4) The cluster of the side fin boxes is unusual in that all four boxes are really close together. A 2 + 1 would normally use the front boxes for your side bites. Anyone ridden one of these as a quad, twin or twinzer?

Thanks

Those dimensions sound like a good lay down long board

Yeah, exactly. The seller weighs about the same as me. Im going to see if I can do a pool test.

The longer rail should make it work like a longer board.
I had a 9-2 Sunova longboard style SUP that I think was only 3 3/4” thick and thin overall with 125 liters. Paddling was ok because it was about 30” wide. This New Deal is next level at only 26” wide though.

If you’re on a mobile device you can see the full images by moving your finger along each one.👍

I think this video features the same model:

I know what it’s like at 190-200 pounds to paddle a short sup with only 95 liters (it’s hell!), but any idea how much different 95 liters would feel paddling when it’s a 9’ x 26” wide Infinity New Deal? Just wondering how much a difference the longer rail would make?

The construction of these old Starboards is bomber.  I would much prefer a Starboard of this vintage than one of the modern garbage Starlite construction.

I am surprised to read that you don’t like the Starlite construction. I bought a slightly used 8-5 Starboard Pro Wave Starlite a few years ago that was in perfect like new condition. Like a moron, I jumped off of a retaining wall to get down to the beach and dropped the rail on the pointy edge of a huge boulder with the full force of my 190 pounds behind it and was shocked to see that it did NOTHING to the rail. Not even a scratch! Any other board I’ve had and there would have been a HUGE gash. (Did something similarly dumb with a factory carbon Infinity RNB once and also zero damage.) I didn’t like that Starboard so I sold it to a friend that loves it and a few years later it’s still in excellent condition.

I think if I bought one with a deck pad like that I would probably want to replace it with an FCS because the FCS pads are so sticky and I’m not sure I could live with that freaky looking candy cane deck pad.

Anyone know if Starboard continued with the white paint under that deck pad?
