Wind Powered / Re: Fins
« on: September 06, 2016, 06:50:36 PM »
Not concerned at about planning, looking at wave performance in 8 to 15 knots.   Another fun day today before it became windy enough for a regular sailboard.   Thanks for the info, next test will be with lopez thruster fins all the same size.  Thanks

Wind Powered / Fins
« on: September 06, 2016, 06:59:23 AM »
Installed a mast track in a 9' x 32" wide North Pacific round pin board.   Sailed it yesterday in lite winds, waist high waves, smooth water.   Fin set up is 7" center fin with 4" side.   Loads of fun on a wave, no problem tracking straight.   No real complaints, looking for input to what others are using fin wise.   I'm not looking to plane, would a bigger center fin help going up wind ?

thanks

I can remember getting blackballed in Redondo beach in 1970.  One of my friends Jack Sahakian was arrested for violating the blackball rule and then pushing a life guard after he tried to take his board.  Black ball I belive means all hard boards out of the water, surfboards, knee boards etc.  I do not like the idea of SUP being classfied as a hazardous sport.  I agree with you, this will lead to an eventual ban at most surf sports once the prone surfers realize all they have to do is cry safety.
It is my hope we as SUP community will be able to educate them on exactly what we do and practiced properly is just as safe as any other mode of surfing waves.
Based on her letter, it seems she is close to understanding.  Have her watch some good wave riding SUP  vids and some prone surfing vids of very aggressive & crowded breaks and the carnage and fighting in the water that goes on.  This will illustrate we are at the very least as safe or safer due to our lack of numbers and our ability to travel long distance.  I have yet to see or have any problems with other SUP surfers.  You are on the right track keep up the good work.  Patience and calm will win the day.  Just to let your know what SUP is up against, when we windsurfers were banned from Bolsa Chica, we were told one tourist from Iowa complaning about something on the beach or in the water carried more weight with authorities than all the resident surfers and sailors.  We found out he was right.  Safety is the issue we need t o convince her / them of, we are as safe as the rest, we are more mature group knowing when to and when not. Good luck

I also am not a fan of lawsuits against the state parks/ county. I would urge you to slow down & let the industry educate the county.  I have also been ask to leave the surfing area @ Doheny as well.  I stay south of the jetty away from the surfers.  Having surfed for 40 yours + and winsurfed for 30 + has taught me to look for uncrowded areas.  We windsurfers were banned from Bolsa Chica SB because of kiting and the threat of a lawsuit by windsurfers.  Calm polite meetings with the Guards as kept us access @ county beachs and state beachs in the winter when uncrowded for windsurfing.  I hope you can negotiate with the local authorities regarding this SUP surfing.  These things take time, not two weeks.  I paddle @ state and county beaches 3 to 4 time a week and have not had any problems.  I do look for uncrowded waves.  How ever, I do not want on over zealous public offical regulating from the hip.  I support your effort, Proceeding in a non aggressive manner will I believe yeild better results.  The beauty of this sport is the openess of the sport travel when you can.   As I said before I support your effort, Please NO Lawsuit

Gear Talk / Wave Boards
« on: June 17, 2009, 09:03:34 AM »
looking for info on boards to ride bigger waves on reefs with less than glassy conditions.  My skill level, 40 yrs of surfing medium to large surf, 25 yrs windsurfing waves and now 3 yrs standup, intermediate + level on the paddle board.  Looking for a board with glide and stability, but gunny enough to ride up to 10 ft waves.  Current board is 10 6 with a pulled in nose & tail 28.5 wide, with medium rocker.   Paddled a place called rockpile on the central coast Monday 6/15/09, big and ledgy.  Had trouble catching the waves due to severe lateral shifting wave.  Seem to be a glide problem.  Would a shorter flater & wider be better or longer board with less rocker be better.  My weight is 205 lbs.  Any ideas.  Considering a jimmy lewis 10 4 .
