I ride the 72cm Armstrong on a 5’4” 95L board. When I tried the 85cm over a couple of days I noticed a couple of unexpected things. Riding higher was the expected and was nice over the ocean chop here on Maui.

1, On my shortish board, the extra weight of the 85 was sinking the back of the board while on the water, I either had to stand much more forward on the board, causing the whole board to be underwater,  or move the mast forward almost an inch which changed all the foiling dynamics.

2, The other thing I noticed was that on the rare times when touch-downs happened, the extra length of the 85 caused my short board to hit the water at such a steep angle it pearled and was not able to skip and recover like on the 72. I got thrown over the front of the board at great speed and it hurt!

I went back to the 72.

Reporting back! Thanks for the feedback!

I've ended up with mast forward (an inch shy of full forward) and the +1 shim. That's helped a lot with lift and today was able to fly in sub 15mph winds. However, my front foot is now too far forward from the strap inserts. Next run I'm moving the mast 1 inch back (2 inches from front of the track) and changing to the 0 shim.

Anyone here tried the -2 shim? How much is the drop in speed from using this shim?

Try to make more subtle changes. Move the mast 1/4 of an inch at a time at most. Try with the +1 if that’s what you been riding. Next time, leave the mast where it is, then change to 0 shim. Too much changes gives readings all over the place and it’s hard to figure out what change did what.

Saw a bunch of V2’s at the board shop. 2.5-6.5. Anyone have any info on these?

I wipe them down with a towel at the beach before rolling them up. Much faster than waiting for them to dry.

Just sold my 6'7" wing board and Starboard 2000 foil set up. It's an ok board to learn on, but there are way better options. As a SUP surfer myself, I am partial to Starboard and that's why I got the wing-board. But I believe that Starboard really missed the boat on this one. They are too much of a SUP maker and not a Wing board maker, so they made a narrow SUP with a foil track.

The 6'7" in lite tech is too heavy! In the beginning you will be carrying your board a lot while doing the walk of shame. The handle on the board only allows you to use 3 fingers, not your whole hand. This led to a tennis elbow issue that I'm still doing PT for. I wish they had installed the great handle that's on their SUP's, and made the thing 5 lbs lighter.

I would suggest getting something in the 115L-ish sub 6 foot range. Like a Quattro wind drifter, Kalama, Fanatic... Short and fat is the shape of wing boards, not long and skinny.

incredible -- love my 2019 foresters -- and im not a big truck person -- but clearly i have bought my last gas powered vehicle -- great vid -- short sweet and owned me.....

and who knows if itll be ford that compels in a couple years when im shopping, and i , too, will likely want a small van or suv, but clearly the products will keep wowing us......

What Ford is doing with the Mach E, and now the Lightening is very significant. From their own data, folks buying the Mach E are new customers to Ford. I suspect that the Lightening will do the same. This means they are stealing market share from other car makers!

VW is doing the same with their ID.3 & 4, here and in Europe. The legacy automakers are realizing that EV's are the way to grow their customer base.

Just wait for the Transit EV coming out later this year,  the Rivian R1, the Ioniq 5, and the EV 6. Our choice of EV's to bring our toys to the water is about to get very interesting.

Late to this thread, but I've put 105,000 miles on a Soul EV as my surf vehicle since 2015. So EV surf cars are already a reality.

Went and checked out the ID.4, Mustang Mach E, and Model Y last month. Any of those would be a good surf, SUP car.

As for EV's as power packs, here on Maui, we do get outages once a year or so. I've often looked at the battery pack in my EV, thinking it should get me through a couple of days of powering the house. So I got an inverter that clips onto the 12v battery. When needed, I just hook it up, turn on the EV and it'll power a few things around the house.

The F150 powering the house is a great killer app. Why pay the $10K for a powerwall when you can put that towards the extended range of the truck and get the bi-directional charger installed for free?

5m for bigger guys. The light bulb went on for me when I switched from a 4m to a 5m. Being “over-winged” in the beginning is a good thing. Foil time is what is important. You won’t learn much if you can’t get on foil.

When you get better you can always buy a smaller wing. You just have to accept that this is a fast evolving sport and moving on from gear is part of the experience. In the 9 months of doing this, between the wife and I, We’ve bought and sold around 7 wings, 2 foils and 2 boards.

Try asking at your local board shop, they might have some laying around.

Right now, wing companies seem more regional. The brands we have access to here on Maui aren’t the same ones in Aus/NZ, the Euros have their own brands. Some folks order stuff online, but most buy what’s in stock at their local board shops. It’s almost like cars. There are many brands in the world, but they are not offered everywhere and people buy what is available locally. So there aren’t “too many” wing companies, there are just lots in different places.

As for sticking to “known” brands, that strategy has had mixed results for me. It all depends on how much R&D the company is doing for winging. There is a big “local name” board maker who made a bunch of boards for the first Wing Surfers, the boards never made sense to me. Then I found out that the owner does not wing, and has no interest, thus the boards are off. For my first board, I went with my favorite SUP company, but they too weren’t into winging, so their shape made no sense either.

Window location seems odd on land. But on foil they were in the right spot for me. I was able to see traffic in front and to the side.

The beginner spot on Maui is the Kahului harbor. From the westside it'll be an hour drive in the summer with all the visitors back. There is plenty of parking but no bathrooms or showers. The rules are simple, have plenty love and aloha for everyone else and when there are ships in the harbor, stay inside the red markers.

If you are new to the sport, an impact vest and a helmet will save you a visit to the ER. Might want to consider shin guards and knee pads to save your legs.

You can rent foil boards from Hi-Tech sports and Kanaha Kai

You can rent wings from Kanaha Kai (Air Rush), Second Wind (Doutone) and Adventure sports.

Got to ride the 4.2 Nova yesterday. Wow! Is all I can say. Currently I ride Armstrong A-wings. The Nova was everything good about the A-wing (great grunt, upwind, power, punches above their weight) with improvement over everything bad about the A-wing (weight, window location, price). The Nova I tried felt like it was half the weight of the A-wing 4.5. When I laid it on top of the A-Wing it was nearly identical in size and shape, only a couple of inches shorter. The windows were in the perfect spot. While on foil it was easy to look through and see thing in-front of me.

My wife also had some rides on it, she is just getting on foil and still has to do the “walk” a lot. With the North wing, she was coming back a lot closer to where she started. It basically cut her walking distance in half.

The handles were super comfortable, there was shaped foam inside, comfortable like the Doutone Unit, but solid and not floppy. It also came with a good wrist leash (like the Ozone one, but with the cuff like on an Airrush).

Lastly the bag is very nice quality, well padded. Rectangular like the Armstrong bags, but double wide and a bit longer. Has a padded shoulder strap and a saddle and strap on the side to hold a pump securely.   

I’ve tried a bunch of wings, and this is the first one that had me thinking about moving on from my current quiver of Armstrong and Duotone.
