Foil SUP / Re: Downwind board size and shape. Using a paddle.
« on: April 22, 2021, 09:42:33 PM »
Hi Jacko,
Thanks for the information. I have a Kalama 6,0 by 29,5, it's a good board but just too wide. I always ride with straps, which helps to position yourself in the right spot.
May I ask you two questions:
What is the weight of these boards?
What is your recommended wide for an intermediate-advance rider?
Regards

I think for dw you don't need ultra short and wide. You need to go as narrow as possible but able to paddle strong. The reason why is you don't want something that stick. I think double concave help for take off and also for stability while paddling.

For exemple I went from 5'2 x 26 - 100L to 5'5 x 24.5 - 96L to now 5'7 x 22.5 - 91L (with more volume at the nose).

I think you need to put the fin box more forward than sup surf foil or wing board.
Thanks for the information French foiler. How much do you weight?
What about the tail? are you in favor of square or a pin tail?

I have the 7m and it's the perfect wing for light wind. It's not very good to starts sinkers but works fine with a bit of wind. I can ride this thing in almost no wind, 8 knt and less.
I sold all my other echos, because the lack of surfing ability but I'm keeping this one.
The high dihedral is critical for big wings, I have more issues catching tips in my 5.4 Sling V2.
Just pump it a bit over 6 psi or to 7 psi.
There is just nothing better for jumping.   :D.
I hope they don't stop doing it.

pafoil, I see what you are saying. I will try that. Yes please on the vid. One thing that the straps have changed for me is the stability (just front foot in) during lulls in the wind when my board goes deep. I have been able to sink it up to waist deep and maintain balance where I couldn't do that as well before straps. This has me thinking of your waterstart technique. Thanks!

re: waterstarts- after a gentle crash from a jump I have been finding myself sitting in water, strapped in both and wing in hands very reminiscent of a kitefoil waterstart. The Dart with mad dihedral is much more inviting than flatter wings for this. I am able to maintain this position and begin to pull/roll myself up ontop of the board still strapped. Well I haven't pulled off yet but I have gotten close enough to see that with more power in the wing, this will work a treat(aussie speak)

Hi
Here is a video of a direct start straped on a 89 litres board. 4,8 by 26.

I hope this helpshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdYwadRJ7fM

I have the echo's for jumping, and the slingshot v2 for surfing.
I wish I can always use a boom, as there is a huge difference in control and handling.
I tried the slingwing with a carbon miniboom, (Armstrong stile), and the weight was noticible  when surfing.
I'm tempted with the new duotone slick, but I will wait until I can test it; or to see what the tarifa duotone guys do.
Some of these duotone riders went back to the echo after testing the "unit" for a few weeks, so that was a big NO for the unit.

"Pafoil-What do you mean "don't mess around with knee starts"?  I don't see any other choice to get up on my 80L. I have gotten close to a waterstart in high winds but that will be rare in my spot. I suppose a true sinker(40L) would allow me to get in straps without kneeling. "

I use the same technique for sinkers for my 89 L,  just lay on the deck, insert your back foot sinking the board a bit and then pull up and insert your front foot. The secret is stay very low , with your ass almost touching the board. Use the wing leading edge for support. I will try to get a video today.

My advice, go for a rigid version; you will get trapped in soft straps.
Don't mess around with knee starts, go strait into the straps.

So far sup foil 1,5 years:
-Broken rib.
-3 stitches next to the eye.
No wing foil incidents.

Foil SUP / Paddle size for downwind foil
« on: April 02, 2021, 11:00:37 PM »
I'm thinking about getting a bigger paddle to try downwind foil, or catching waves earlier. Mr Kalama seems to be going for 100 plus these days.
Any experiences or recommendations?

PD: I have a UV88 and it's not working for me at 183 kg.

General Discussion / Re: Tiger shark etiquette

As an ex diver fish-farmer, I have more experiences with this beauties that I would want.
My advice, learn their stress sings. If the move fast, arched back fins down. RUNNNN.
Don't let them check you out many times.
At the end shark are like dogs, and you don't get close to a dog that is barking stressed out.
I hope this helps.

Nice! I dropped to 5' fanatic sky copy last summer, but didn't get enough days on it to get it dialed in.  Water starting was enough of a hassle that I found I was tentative about doing anything that risked coming off foil.  So for winter's unpredictable winds, I've gone back to ol' reliable....6.10 sup foil, 115L.

Spring is coming, soon time to get back on the program. Looking forward to playing around with smaller boards.

I am also excited to try again with the sinker board experiment....more and more first-hand reports of mere mortals accomplishing this, and more "how to" videos to follow.  The way it's evolving I suspect it may be like windsurfing, where in a short period of time most intermediate plus riders switched from uphauling big slalom boards to low volume wave boards. The water start unlocked it.  But not for all riders or all spots ... need some skills, need lots of wind, and need enough waves to bother.  Similar for winging.  It will be interesting to see how it plays out.  I surf foil a medium size board....40L ish.   I am considering trying it on my kite foil (20L ish)...if going sinker, go full sinker I reckon.

Hi,
I have been playing with different options. For me the advantage of a small board is that you can water start fast, WHEN SUFFICIENT POWERED.
Let's say something like a 5m wing in 20-25 Knt or a 4 m in 30 knt. In those winds you can go directly for a normal windsurf waterstart.
Look at the video, I hope it helps. (44 litres- 82 kg rider)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0etT71d6AM

In any case, I'm waiting for a 55 litres and a 88 litres soon.
