Wingsurfing, Windfoiling, Wingfoiling, Wing SUP / Re: Dart

Let me start off by saying I own a slingwing V2 and like it.

A buddy of mine who wing foils pretty good, is going to sell his 5 meter Dart.  It's well built but doesn't deliver enough power.  For wind challenged spots, his reasoning is it would not get used very frequently, and he already has a 5m slingwing.

Seems to be popular with the kids who are doing flips

Nice video pafoil.

I really like how you use the kite surf maneuver to get up on the 44 Liter board.  The wind is clearly blowing quite well, much more than what I'm used to seeing at my local spot.  Anyway, it's interesting to see you adapting that to winging.  I started winging in August so definitely not at this point, but it's a useful frame of reference for other ways to get going.

I weigh 90 kgs, and started on a  6'0" 120 L F-One Rocket.  I found the board to be extremely lite weight and perfect for my local conditions.  At the time I purchased the wing board, there were several boards on the market, but many seemed too heavy in my opinion.  If you live in windy areas, maybe board weight isn't such an issue.

The 120 L board (+30) was really easy to get up on.  I've been prone surfing for over 30 years, and found I could just stand up from a prone position and pick up the wing.  After switching to a 105 L board (+15), knee starts were required.  Honestly, the first few sessions were not fun as I had to learn to tread lightly when knee starting, and not stuff the nose.   Then the lights came on and it's not such a problem now.  But I remember back to the first day being surprised by how difficult it seemed.

I agree with others the 5'6" 105 liter might be too difficult as an initial board.  It can be done, but seems like it might be unnecessary.  Local spots nearby I'd characterize as being on the lite side - Average 10-12 mph winds, 10 to 15 on a handful of good days per month.  So wing boards for me must be small and lite weight period to get up on foil. If you live in more wind prone places, weight/size may not be such an issue.  Anyway  I can definitely fly in 15 mph winds.  When it gets below it gets dicey.  At 12 mph I've struggled but more experienced lighter guys are still flying.  Don't think you can go wrong with either board, but ultimately comes down to your local conditions.

Thanks for the insight, Pasquales. Definitely board weight is a factor I’m considering. I’m actually loosing weight, so have though about getting the 5.6. How’s flotation with a 200lbs rider? What’s the lowest wind speed you need to get on foil?

I ride the Quatro 5'6" and weigh 200 lbs.  Haven't ridden Fanatic boards.  A buddy has one and sold his because he wanted a board that weighs less.   I previously owned an F One Rocket 120 liter, and wanted to downsize.  The quatro uses a dense EPS core, carbon wrap and lighter glass.  With the carbon layer, I've found them to be sufficiently durable.  There are plenty of other brands that also manufacture this way, and don't use vent plugs.  Boards that use low density foam should definitely use a vent plug.

Thanks for putting this together, and for being a good foil steward and including PSA's.  I was prone foiling today with a buddy who's a beginner.  As the lineup starting filling up, I had to remind him to move down from the crowds.  Nice interview learning about Zane .  Besides being an elite athlete, He seems like a cool guy.

Anyway, there was a little wind so I took the 6M out with my 1150 and 340. Pretty wimpy wind, but I was there, so I gave it a go. I got up a few times, pumping like a maniac. there was a Japanese guy out with a 5M who was doing great but he probably weighed 80 pounds.

That guy has a ton of wind surfing and kitefoiling experience.  He blows my mind by how easy he get's flying.  For me, wind sports in SoCal and can be a love/hate relationship.   I'm under 12 mos of winging, and struggle in average conditions here (Avg 10-12 mile per hour winds).  I  find weighing 90 kgs, it's much harder to get up and sustain flight in these conditions.  Experience and weight are definitely factors, but also equipment.  His foil is the Moses 1100 and is geared strictly towards kiting.  Just wondering if this is the magic foil for our local conditions ?

Some nice boards being made down under.

Was hoping today the wind predictions would hold, but my timing was off.  Left work early but the wind kept dropping from lunch onward  I've been winging less than a year, and so far I've learned the wind window 🪟 in San Diego is very tight.  It can be difficult getting reps in as the best wind is typically mid day during the work week.  Fortunately there are other activities such as surfing that can be really fun.  I would just like to mix it up a little more.  So keeping fingers crossed for another Jan wind event.

Hi Bill.  I think with this wind blowing, will venture out with the wing.  Will send you a dm.

Bill - It was fun winging with you at Sail Bay.  The session had to be at least a cpl hours, I was pretty spent afterwards.  That guy you helped launch his kite owes you a major solid.   Luckily you were close by as I don't know squat about kiting.  That kite seemed like something for 10 mph winds, not what was blowing today.  :o

Just to be clear, not knocking chined rails. This design element is pretty standard in foil boards (sup, wing, prone), and used for shedding water during touchdowns.  Rounded rails stick so a no go.  I was speaking more to concaves (single, double)  on the bottom of boards,  and how some shapers feel they don't add much.

Sorry meant to say not 100% sold on contours being necessary for prone foiling.

There is much debate about bottom contours among shapers.   Given I'm still relatively new, I'll leave this up to those with a few more waves under their belt to chime in.  My first board didn't have contours, current one does.  In my limited experience, skill defined by popping up and controlling the foil has been the most difficult part rather than catching waves.  However the nearest beaches to me tends to break pretty fast, where there is often too much power.  Anyway Amunson is definitely from the school that the board should be neutral.  There is talk about how contours allow the board to break free sooner,  I guess in gutless surf this might be the case, personally I'm 100% sold.

Admin- That slingshot looks like a nice prone foil board.  Too bad I just picked up a similar sized FFB off Craigslist.   For reference,  It has same volume, and paddles decent to support my 200 lbs.

Haven't tried KT prone boards, but have the Quatro Wing drifter for winging (designed by KT).  Like that board a lot.
