Learning stage was intense ... so fatigued after an hour I could barely hang on ... nice thing about winging is its easy to rest on the beach in between go's (versus kiting where it's a big hassle to land and relaunch). But after a while, seems you build up some strength and learn how to economize movement, not so much an issue as long as doing it consistently.

When overpowered, eg 6m above 18kt, I find it can be quite painful on my lat muscle on the sheeting in arm.  The big ozone is a beast and I think it actually pushes the limit of power I can physically handle.  I have found a harness really helps for long reaches,  hook in, lean back, just use arms to steer.  Then unhook when into the turning or wave riding.  But leads to some more challenging wipeouts too.

Foil SUP / Re: SUP surfing what foil brand should I be looking at
« on: January 11, 2021, 01:41:19 PM »
I started on slingshot: cheap, solid, functional, heavy.

Now on gofoil: middle high price, all carbon, bombproof construction, works great. Can get the older wings like Maliko and Iwa pretty cheap (but shipping from Hawaii is $$$)

Seems like Axis is the best value right now: high end performance at middle prices.

Lots of buddies on Armstrong: has been the gold standard of late, expensive but everyone loves them.

WOW! Nicely done.  I am looking to buy another and momentarily dismayed at the cost.  Then I see the steps in your build and I don't feel so bad shelling out the $200.  That would take me most of the next year to build and it would still be no good!  :-)

Foil SUP / Re: Personal tow in

Awesome, love the ingenuity.

I got intrigued (maybe suckered) by a kickstarter: https://boostsurfing.com/
I can't imagine surfing with it will be much fun, too much drag in the water.  But if attached to a foil mast base, maybe just enough juice to get you up on foil, then from there the motor is up and out of the water.  So....maybe another version of a personal tow in?

I expect to be disappointed, keeping my hopes really low.  But the dream is getting in super early on swells that are otherwise not paddleable.

that's my worry bigmtn.  Even going to 4.9 from my 5.0, the volume drop meant not being able to paddle effectively -- though so nice once up riding.   I am going to try making a 4.4, similar to Ride Engine Escape Pod, but an inch thicker...see if I can get best of both worlds, short pumper but also enough volume to be paddleable by middle-aged mortal.  I report back around xmas time wooo

west coast Canadian here.  If you aren't going to use it for 6 months, I'd wait.  Things are moving fast, many companies are just releasing Gen2, some may be into Gen3 by the time you jump in -- and more upgrading means more used stuff available. Right not, it's fairly rare to see things used and the prices are high.

On brand/quality, my opinion is you'd be better off with one of last year's top models vs a new cheapie no-name.  In first gen, I figured they are low-tech and all the same, bought a lower tier model and regretted it...heavy and floppy.  The Gen2's came out really quick and some brands had completely different design ... i.e., first gen was pretty clearly a fail.   Kind of like kiting, I suspect we'll see some quality convergence soon, with all of them copying each other's designs for what works, and all the bigger name brands having equivalently solid gear.  Maybe it's already getting there.

OK, can't resist any more, need to try out the higher aspect wings.
Ideally seeking a GL180, will consider 210 or other sizes.

Canada Foiler has some intersting points, though the bulk of his post belies the idea expressed in the second paragraph. Yes, once you're up the shape of the board matters a lot less,

Just to clarify: my bad attitude note was about gizmos, "double concave to single concave to V with deep concave chines and a step tail".  Fully agree with you about size/shape trade-offs ... and when you really boil it down, for winging it mostly comes down to volume.

133
A few random thoughts ... my supfoil progression over past 3-4 years has been through-hull bolts on a standard 9.2 sup, then a foil tracks on a 7.6 door board, then a 6.8 purpose-built supfoil.  And now a 5' wingboard DIY homage to fanatic sky board.  I mostly prone surf foil now, not much supfoil any more, so the use of these boards is primarily winging lately.

I am permanent intermediate and have a somewhat cynical bad-attitude about many or most of the design features for foil boards.  A bit like each year's new colours for fishing lures, designed to catch fishermen more than fish.  ;-)   Foilboards are a platform that spend most of their riding time above the water surface, much of the sophisticated bits offer such marginal benefit that a typical rider probably wouldn't notice them much. But hey, just one man's opinion eh.

I find my 6.8 works great as day-to-day go-to for winging.  It is roughly 110-120L.  On the bigger side, in both length and volume, but that makes it quite easy.  I can comfortably stand on it when wind is too light.  Easy paddler.  But not so huge that it's a pig for doing turns, riding waves, etc -- keeping in mind I also use it for in surf as a supfoil with paddle.  It would obviously be too big for doing airs or rad freestyle moves, but as I am not doing either, it fits the bill most of the typical lawn mowing type days.

I am experimenting with my 5' board too and still in learning phase, so can't give a proper opinion yet. It is SUPER fun once up and riding, so little swing weight.  BUT: short of being lit, in lighter winds it can be challenging to knee start and get up on foil. I am at the stage where once up and riding I am afraid to fall off, in case I can't get back up, which means I find I ride safe and won't take chances or push the edge ... and that edge is what makes riding fun. So anything short of perfect conditions, I find I end up defaulting back to ol' reliable. I will need to bite the bullet and put in the time to properly learn this "performance" board.

Point being: IMHO smaller sup foils are fine for winging.  Progression comes at a cost, you need to weigh what you gain against what it may take away, decide what you're after.

Finally, technical note: for sup/surf foiling, our crew has been spending quite a bit of effort to get foils perfectly level with the centre of the board, using shims to account for tail rocker.  I was surprised to see how much tail rocker the Fanatic Sky has though.  This goes along with one of the Progression Project podcasts, where the guest talked about preferring a little nose-up, to give a surfboard/snowboard feel, vs dropping into waves with the feeling the board is diving.  That's an interesting variation.

Wingsurfing, Windfoiling, Wingfoiling, Wing SUP / Re: Wing harness?

Have any wipeouts yet where you are unable to unhook?  Not quite as violent as the catapulting I experience in my early attempts to learn windsurfing water starts. But it does happen pretty quick, I worry about getting pulled onto the wing and tearing the delicate butterfly canopy.   :P

135
I am looking forward to seeing it in the wild.

An issue with aluulu in kites is the leading edge is lighter, but the canopy is still same old ripstop.  So it's a partial solution at this point.

But on a wing,  especially big sizes, the leading edge dominates the materials.  If it is twice the strength for half the weight, that is honestly a game changer!  My 6m ozone leading edge may be a foot thick at the middle ... cut that in half, that should massively improve its capabilities.
