Foil SUP / Re: Bump Cap - less kooky foil head protection
« on: March 15, 2020, 11:22:31 PM »
Honestly the first month I learned foiling, I think shin guards were the most needed protection.  I can't believe how many times I bashed my shin(s) on the rail.  I think I remember a few charlie-horses to the quad too.  I've yet to have anything even close to a head injury, thank goodness.

I met a guy on the water who had learned with Olivier as well and had great things to say.

Foil SUP / Re: Foil first steps - Surfcowboy sets out
« on: March 09, 2020, 04:26:32 PM »
I usually get lined up and take the first one or two strokes with my feet in parallel stance, then hop into surf stance for the final few catch paddles.  I'd like to be in surf-stance earlier, but my SUP is not well balanced to get my feet in the right place until the wave starts to pick me up (have to be forward weighted to catch the wave, then move back once it grabs and ready to foil).

It took me exactly a dozen sessions on SUP to go from "complete kook and a danger to myself and those around me" to "in control enough to be a danger only to myself."  At that time, I still wanted huge buffer cushion of space around me without anyone else around, but I could at least have some confidence in going where I meant to go.   I didn't get any time behind a boat or with a wing though, just got on and learned by failing/flailing/falling.

Have fun!

Yeah, skatey is exactly how I would describe it (and not in a good way).  I'm in line for the new gofoil tail design.  I'll probably keep holding out for that and live with it until then.

yes Beasho, I have the 140.  However, I can't make a good review of it yet because I've committed myself to only going out on the prone board until I get good at prone foiling.  I'm not yet any good at all, but I am up and flying.  The 140 is great, and worked fine even in small mushy waves - very efficient and fast.  It does feel quite a bit more loose as compared with the 210 on a SUP, but that could also be the tiny prone board causing that rather than the 140.  I haven't had enough time on the prone+210 to make a comparison, so I'm not useful unfortunately.

it would make sense if your foil is all the way forward, then you'd have to stand further forward on the board - this would tend to make the board want to pearl before you're up to speed.

We shall see of course, by my betting money is that Alex hired someone to get him a patent because one of his investors told him he had to.  These days the patent office will grant most anything, preferring to let the courts sort it out later if there is prior art.  So, he's got his patent and investor is happy.  I highly doubt this means GoFoil is going to try and sue over it.  No lawyer takes that case since it is so clearly a losing proposition.

I'm no expert on pumping.  That said, I'm thinking that the CG of the board has an ideal location with respect to the foil center of effort and pitching moment center. That's because at the critical part of the pump where the board is unweighted, it needs to pitch up slightly and gain height through lift.  If the CG is in the wrong place, I guess the rider has to weight the board a bit to compensate which would make it harder to gain the height needed.

For what its worth, I have tactile pads on my deck for foot-placement and can get my feet in exactly the same place everytime.  I haven't had to adjust placement at all from cut-tail IWA/M200 to GL210/140.    The bigger difference was when I cut the maliko tail down, I had to move my front foot back just a bit - maybe an inch.

not to shabby for undergraduate engineering final project.  The tail looks huge, but I bet it rides quite stable (if a bit sluggish).  nice work

Last swim in was because my leashlok waist leash failed at the place where the fitting enters the waist belt (same setup as you).  If you're serious about leash integrity, learn to hand-tie.  It's essentially a double sheet bend knot from parachute cord to the leash cord.  That's how I fixed my waist leash and it's going strong now.  I could post a picture of the knot I used if you wish

Haha, one of my buddies texted me on Saturday morning from the cliffs overlooking that break - "I just saw a guy on a foil grab a wave at middles and ride it all the way to the beach!"

You better believe people are taking notice.  Luckily there is still a ton of room on the shoulder...

Foil SUP / It could be your board!
« on: January 27, 2020, 10:09:51 AM »
My 7’x29”x120L foil specific SUP board is in my garage drying out prior to a repair.  I’ve been borrowing a prone board from my buddy.  Wow, prone has NOT been an easy transition.  I finally caught a wave, stood up, and foiled after about 10 sessions of failure.  I’ve been wanting to learn, so I promised myself I wouldn’t SUPfoil until I learned - that’s the only way I made it through 10 awful sessions…  Anyway, I decided to celebrate my recent success by taking out my old converted foil SUP.

HOLY CRAP - it rides so poorly!  I can’t believe I ever learned to foil on this thing.  It is a converted 8’5”x29”x120L starboard SUP with a Tuttle installed.  Comparing directly to my foil specific board, it is super slow to paddle, balances way worse, hard to turn to catch a wave, really hard to get out of the water, and has so much swing weight that turning the foil on the wave is a bear.  And not only that, it is noticeably slower in a straight line even with the GL210 (?!?).

I’m still not rushing the repair because I want to get some more sessions prone foiling.  My motivation to keep proning is even higher now since there’s no way I’ll go back out on my old converted board.  So if you're hitting a wall with your foiling, the board could be a part of the issue.
