The Shape Shack / Re: Jumbo Foil Mount Boxes

it looks like the 16" boxes are a different design than the 10" (maybe lighter)?

When I look at the 999 and black fuselage, it looks like the wing is hanging out further forward of the mast than my other foils.  I assume this is why we all have to slide it back in the boxes a bit.

Did we decide what the perfect tail for the 999 is?
I'm running the KDMaui 13.5" at about 3.5deg up and I've been happy.  Hard to say if there might be a better setup

That makes total sense - straps are really not helpful for pumping.  And agreed that we want to be able to move our feet around a bit.  I usually scoot my back foot several inches foward for pumping versus surfing.  I don't find it helpful to move my front foot but that's just me.

The thing I like a front strap for is cranking into a wave on a sup.  Being able to pull up and push forward on the front strap makes a pretty big difference in catching waves early.  Its a nice side effect that it ensures my feet are in the right place every time.

For a pumping race straps would just be added weight and of no use

I have resisted the massive urge to let myself get into this.  I spent a few years two decades ago deeply in the international canoe racing/development class.  Super fun boat but being a development class generally means the boat is broken more often than it is sailing.  There was always a few van guys with a full composite layup tools and materials ready to help people patch stuff up and get back out there the next day.  And everyone pitched in on the late-nighter repair because if they didn't there would only be 3 guys on the starting line instead of 4.  The awesome part was showing up for a 3-day regatta and seeing all the cool mods people had done since the last one.  We all copied each other and would show up at the next one with our own version of whatever was working best.  Super invigorating, but I usually spent a week of all-nighters leading up to a regatta.  Can't do that with the way my life is now - maybe again when I retire.

The moth class is pretty much like this too as far as I can tell.

I'm crossing my fingers for you that the boat you picked is well made and doesn't break something every other crash.  That's the real drag on these things.

I saw that before - it was interesting to see all the fastest are on ozone wasp v2.  He must be on some magical foil - I'm assuming its Mike's Lab

If you're stalling suddenly, go with a bit more shim (more downforce or more negative angle of attack).

More shim to raise the rear of the tail wing? Or to lower the rear of the tail wing?

yes, raise the rear end of the tail.  This will do a few things: 1) increase the downforce of the tail, which in effect requires you to move forward a little bit on the board 2) because the balanced center of gravity of the board/rider is now further forward - the system is now more stable in pitch. 3) the tail will have a bit more drag

I'm willing to bet it has to do with the angle of attack of the tail rather than the size.   For a given tail, I found the need to mess with shims adjusting the angle of attack through .5deg increments to find its ideal setting for the way I ride.  If you're stalling suddenly, go with a bit more shim (more downforce or more negative angle of attack).

Foil SUP / Re: GoFoil RS Series?

how did you get ahold of one?  which are you on?

how good are they?  Extremely good.   I've ridden 980 and 1210 prone, SUP and winging.  There is something magical about the kujira that makes it extremely stable in pitch yet super maneuverable side to side.   For such a great turning wing, they have amazing low end and are great for pumping.

I wonder if gofoil has finally adopted numbering system based on area in cm2.

I’ve pretty much given up on gofoil - basically seems unobtainable, zero information available anywhere.  Good for Alex running a lifestyle business, but I think I’ll support the companies which are willing to actually market and sell their gear rather than a fraternity for his Maui bros.

review after second ride in bigger surf:
This wing has A LOT of flex.  Stability is funky in funky waves and white-wash - you can feel the wing wobbling around.   But I also started to feel that flex in pumping - if you hit the right cadence, I felt like the wing returns some energy as it "flaps".  Pretty awesome actually.

It wants to be on a rail for turns - does not like flat "pivot" style turns. It washed out and threw me several times, I guess I'm in a habit from the kujira which is perfectly happy to be slashed as well as railed.  The ART999 is plenty maneuverable, just needs to be put on edge with the load going directly down through the foil rather than turned while flat.  In practice this means you need to plan ahead a bit more and get it on edge before you want to turn.

Can't wait to wing on it, I think it will be an excellent winging foil because of how slippery it is - super low drag and comes up smooth as speed increases.

anyone know if armstrong is selling their long carbon tracks?  probably not, and if so probably for a fortune
