The Shape Shack / Re: XPS Surfoil Build 6 x 18 x 40ltr x 3kg

1400g for drillium blank
400g for boxes, leash plug, gore vent. (why install a gore vent if the entire lamination can breath???)
1200 for the lamination - and you think you could take maybe 200g out of that

Thanks. I bet you could get a lot more out of that blank if it was CNC cut on the inside - maybe 2-300g more.

Freaking exciting that a 40L board could maybe get to 2.5kg

Did you weight during the process?  I'm wondering how much of the total weight is the hollowed out blank, boxes, stringers, and carbon tubes versus how much is the external lamination?

this is incredible!  Thank you for posting the build details.  3kg is awesome.  The Beasho innovation of ignoring pinholes and letting the lamination "breath" is really enabling some interesting builds.

I have been wondering how long until we see barracuda style prone boards.  Any downsides?

I doubt it.  if you really want to get up in "nothing" then go for a narrow long barracuda downwind style board.    There are several out now, and they work incredible to allow either super light wind or very small wing/foil combinations.

never seen anyone laminate a board in khakis and a white button down.  very nice work!
I love that it doesn't look like much finish work of coating/sanding, etc.

I discovered this stuff fixing my wing bladder.  Apparently well known to kiters for years.  But I recently realized that it works wonderful for patching board dings to keep the board watertight.  If you prep the surface with alchohol it sticks really well and seems very durable (sand very smooth if not already).  Previously I had been using aluminum foil HVAC tape, it seals but actually isn't very durable.

yes, I didn't know what to make of Adrian saying that mounting the mast directly over the foil doesn't work.  His explanation didn't make any sense at all either.   Nice to have your data point that at least for the foil you designed, it works with mast directly mounted.  We also have the fellow below who found the same thing:

I'm swapping back and forth between my 5'6" 85L "traditional" wingboard and my 8' barracuda.  To be honest, I'll probably stop swapping back and forth and just settle on the barracuda every day.   Its just better in every way, but I keep taking out the old small board just to see if I'm missing something.  Haven't found anything yet.

Now, I'm dreaming of a 85L 7'6" version just to shave a little weight and swing-weight.   For my #210 pounds, it would be a slight bit of a sinker, but I'm pretty confident that once its moving just a little bit, the low volume will be fine.

A lot of people are questioning me at the beach when they see an 8' strange looking board, but I'm confident that if they were to try it they'd be hooked too.

There is a draw to thinking about Center of Lift as a position on the front wing wing, but it can, and often will, move entirely off of the front wing (or never be located there).

I don't think that's true at all.  How could the center of lift EVER be located somewhere other than on the wing?

really really cool - I'm so glad to see it is working.  AND it didn't break!

beasho - will you give me the lowdown comparing the 1201 to 1099?  I'm still on the 999/1099 and will eventually probably be on the 1201, but I'm kind of waiting for the 1101 or 1001 if such a thing were to come out.

I've been thinking about converting an old 5m foil kit into a wing.  I think a carbon paddle shaft with the right bridle system could work.  It would be very very light weight, but it might be impossible to get it stable enough to be useful.  Not enough spare workshop time to fiddle with this, and I guess I'll probably get rewarded since it looks like someone else will do the hard work of experimentation until it works.

I agree.  The barracuda shape is like an easy button for getting on foil.  Balancing side to side is a non issue for winging.  I can just barely SUP comfortably on it, but winging is no problem at all stability wise.  Even when the wind gets so light I can barely hold up the wing, the board isn't tippy side to side.

I'm sort of guessing here since I haven't been a beginner in a while - but I think the speed of the board in the water is a huge asset for learning.  You can get it going pretty fast in the water without a lot of coordinated hand/leg pumping.  Then you can let it rise up out of the water slowly rather than having to "ollie" a  big wide board out of the water.

Does anyone still have one of these in just about any condition?  I just need the paddle head, but if you want to sell the whole paddle, a shaft and handle wouldn't be bad for the spare parts bin...   Let me know, thanks.
