The Shape Shack / Nose Job on a foilboard
« on: March 23, 2020, 01:06:52 PM »
To quote Clamsmasher on another foil forum:
"I’d had a few drinks, I noticed the hacksaw trying to get my attention from across the bar, tryed to ignore her..but the jungle drums were beating and we both woke up feeling used."

So, yeah, I cut about 6" off my 7' dwight board.  The paddling balance point was always a bit further forward than the foil balance point, so I figured let's move things back a bit.  Also hoping to reduce the swing weight.  Oh, and the nose was taking on water anyway.

Did some shaping with my new Bosch dual mode rotary orbital sanding (seems to be a direct competitor to the Festool Rotex 150, and perhaps a bit better - certainly cheaper!).  Next up is some epoxy filler and lots more sanding to clean up the transitions between old skin and foam.

Foil SUP / It could be your board!
« on: January 27, 2020, 10:09:51 AM »
My 7’x29”x120L foil specific SUP board is in my garage drying out prior to a repair.  I’ve been borrowing a prone board from my buddy.  Wow, prone has NOT been an easy transition.  I finally caught a wave, stood up, and foiled after about 10 sessions of failure.  I’ve been wanting to learn, so I promised myself I wouldn’t SUPfoil until I learned - that’s the only way I made it through 10 awful sessions…  Anyway, I decided to celebrate my recent success by taking out my old converted foil SUP.

HOLY CRAP - it rides so poorly!  I can’t believe I ever learned to foil on this thing.  It is a converted 8’5”x29”x120L starboard SUP with a Tuttle installed.  Comparing directly to my foil specific board, it is super slow to paddle, balances way worse, hard to turn to catch a wave, really hard to get out of the water, and has so much swing weight that turning the foil on the wave is a bear.  And not only that, it is noticeably slower in a straight line even with the GL210 (?!?).

I’m still not rushing the repair because I want to get some more sessions prone foiling.  My motivation to keep proning is even higher now since there’s no way I’ll go back out on my old converted board.  So if you're hitting a wall with your foiling, the board could be a part of the issue.

Foil SUP / Steep and Hollow
« on: November 24, 2019, 09:54:59 AM »
Anyone figured out the trick to late drops into steep and hollow waves?

I've been surfing a spot lately that breaks this way (and having a ball by the way).  Its incredible to drop late and outrun the section that looks totally unmake-able on a surfboard or SUP.  I'm having to retrain my brain that screams "bail out the back!"

What I'm struggling with is a complete inability to ride the middle/top of the wave where it is steep.  The only thing that has been working is go straight down the wave to the flat and use that speed to get in front of the wave on the mellow part of the shoulder.  I'm really wanting to make a bottom turn and get back into the middle of the pit to either make a top turn or trim for speed, but that ends in complete disaster so far.

I'm starting to wonder if a much smaller wing is the ticket.  Or maybe just get a lot more athletic on the turns to get the board more vertical up and down the waveface.

Classifieds / Paddles: KeNalu Molokai xtuf 79.5" Werner 82"
« on: October 05, 2019, 05:04:07 PM »
$150 KeNalu is a big bladed paddle, great for surfing with a powerful catch to get you in early. XTuf stiff blade, ergo handle.  79.5" from tip of blade to top of handle.
$100 Werner, probably about 85sqin blade.  The shaft is fairly stiff and has a slight ovalization that feels great in your hand.  There is a split in the blade, it hasn't gone soft.  82" from tip of blade to top of handle

You pay shipping or pickup in SF bay area

Classifieds / Naish 8'8" x 32" x32LE full carbon

$600
Nose was professionally rebuilt by my windsurf repair guy after the board broke a couple ribs on a particularly big day at OBSF.  Perfect repair and the board is still super light.  It paddles like a dog, but comes alive on the wave - slashing top turns and carving bottom turns.  I had so much fun on this board that I'd rather keep it but I only ride the foil anymore.  Naish day bag included, zipper works but the pulls broke off. I don't know how to ship a board, so local sale in the San Francisco bay area please.

$800
This board has two very professional repairs.  Still super light and the repairs look good.  This board is so versatile that I'd rather keep it forever, except I don't think I'll ride anything other than a foil anymore.  I don't know how to ship a board, so local sale in the San Francisco bay area please.  The board bag is NOT included.

Classifieds / 2 GoFoil kits: Maliko 160 and M200/IWA
« on: October 05, 2019, 04:48:24 PM »
priced to sell!

$500 shipped - Maliko 160 foil, 24.5 tuttle mast, tail, covers.  I learned on this foil setup - works great and is the most stable of the GoFoil setups.   Well used, but nothing wrong with it.

$950 shipped - M200 and IWA wings, 24.5 tuttle mast, 420mm cut tail, covers.  This is a perfect setup to cover a wide range of conditions from big and hollow to ankle slappers.  The cut tail is quite an upgrade from the stock setup, but you can buy a stock tail fairly cheaply.  Well used, but nothing wrong with it.

Foil SUP / fairing my gofoil GL210
« on: September 18, 2019, 11:46:39 PM »
I am seriously considering using some kind non-permanent filler to "fair in" and streamline my GL210 in a quest to eradicate drag and maximize glide.  Going too far you say?  Maybe, but I won't know until I try it - maybe I won't be able to tell the difference, or maybe it'll be revolutionary.  If drag is reduced 5% it would be worth it, and I wouldn't be surprised if it did.  On occasion I feel like I can't get the board moving, and I flip the board over to find a tiny strand of grass stuck on it.  I am continually surprised at how much that little bit of drag is noticeable.

Think I'm crazy? Fine, move along and comment elsewhere.  The rest of you - who has advise on exactly what filler product or mix of products I can use for this?

I'd fill in and sand to smooth the following spots:
The main wing screw and countersink gap
The gap between the fuse and the main wing
The gap between the fuse and the tail pedestal
The two phillip heads screws holding on the tail
run a small fillet radius around the connection between the tail and the pedestal

Together I think these improvements will be noticeable.  But I don't want to forever lock the parts together, so it would have to be removable somehow.  Don't care too much how it looks, it'll be underwater most of the time that matters.

Classifieds / GoFoils, JL striker, Naish x32, KeNalu
« on: August 25, 2019, 01:24:49 PM »
Selling a bunch of gear that I don't use any more to fund GL240 and maybe a new board.  I don't have time to ship any of this until after Sept. 7th, so I'll take offers until then.  Priority goes in this order: most active users, local buyer, best offer, and lastly to the order of who contacts me first.  Not sure the right prices, but long time posters should be able to get a very fair deal.  Photos only for serious offers.

GoFoil Maliko 160, Mailko tail, 24.5" Tuttle mast, all in good shape.  A great setup for first timer learning.  I learned on this setup and was happy I did.  Stable.  If you already know how to foil you will feel limited as it won't crank hard into turns.

GoFoil IWA, M200, 420mm cut Maliko tail, 24.5" Tuttle mast, all in good shape.  This is a high performance setup perfect for 185-210lb rider.  Still forgiving enough to learn on if necessary, but more oriented to an experienced rider.  I have a thread on the cut tail, trust me this is the way to go with these wings.

Jimmy Lewis Striker 8'5" 116L green, great shape.  With stock fins and better fins.  This is a very high performance board, can take a steep drop and race the shoulder but can also be mellow or nose ride ok.  Stable enough at 210lbs, but only for an expert.  Tail handle upgrade.  Probably best for 185lbs or less.

Naish x32 8'8" 140L carbon from the first batch, not sure which year.  Well used with a nicely done nose rebuild.  This is a high performance short board for the heavy guys.  Fast and loose and plenty happy on both the steep big stuff as it is on mushy. Can duck dive big steep heavy waves if you bury the nose.  FCS quad fins.  Tail handle upgrade.  Paddles pretty slow because of the rocker, but that's also why it is super fun to surf.

XTuff Molokai Kenalu blade, used, no dings
Ergo Kenalu handle
Could sell assembled with an XTuff Stiff shaft, but that shaft does have a small single fiber delam that hasn't mattered to me for the last year - and I pull pretty hard on it.  Prefer not to sell the shaft unless you promise not to complain about that flaw.

Foil SUP / Anyone here tried wingsurfing?
« on: May 29, 2019, 10:08:53 PM »
looks intriguing.  I've been thinking a bunch about whether I'll be able to ride my foil switch.  I tried on a couple of waves and ate it immediately, then didn't have the patience to keep at it

Foil SUP / source for tall gofoil mast?

Does anyone sell just the mast?  I have several wings and two masts already and am familiar with how to get everything to fit up correctly.  GoFoil isn't returning my phone call
