as far as batteries go, if you aren't wanting to hack into a electric vehicle battery, I think the best bet are putting together a pack from Lithium Ion Iron Phosphate primatic cells.

I have a bunch of these and they are excellent, good life, low cost.
https://www.evlithium.com/hot-lithium-battery/eve-lf230-230ah-lifepo4-cell.html

You'll need a Battery Management System.  I have experience with Daly, which are pretty easy to wire up and configure
https://www.dalybms.com/smart-lifepo4-bms/

Decide how much energy you want to store, and how much peak power you want to be able to source to your home.  You'll need an inverter/charger rated appropriately for the panel voltage.  And that will steer you in the right direction of number of cells in series/parallel for the battery.

Here is one example for a small system 1400W solar, 48V battery, 5kW AC inverter.  I don't have direct experience on this one.
https://www.amazon.com/Inverter-Charger-Controller-Lithium-Batteries/dp/B096B7JQVH?th=1

Go down the youtube rabbit hole on this stuff and there is a ton to learn about putting together a battery pack, inverters, mppt solar charger, etc.

Foil SUP / Re: Traveling with DW foilboard?
« on: February 25, 2024, 04:47:59 PM »
I'm curious on the same thing.  I am looking to travel with my 8ft Kalama downwind board, and I'm thinking its going to be difficult.  I still have an old coffin bag from my windsurfing days, but the airlines seem to have a dimensional limit that isn't going to work.

United Policy is:
115 total inches (length + width + height) if you’re flying on United
Measure less than 80 inches (203 cm) if you’re flying on United Express

The board alone is 96"x22"x6" which is more than the limit so with the bag its going to be a lot more than that.  I expect a nice person at the desk might let it slide, but it would be pretty awful to  show up at the airport and get turned away

anyone holding an old gofoil mast they'd be willing to sell cheap?  I have an IWA wing and KAI tail still laying around and I want to gift it to a friend as a prone learning kit.   Would need a track version or find a tuttle conversion plate.

A readily available and cheap resource by me is broken hockey sticks. Nice light strong carbon rectangles. Take a grinder to an edge and pop in a box. I haven't done it yet but it could work. Maybe/

A homebuilt wing-board showed up at the launch not too long ago and I got to chatting with the builder.  He used carbon hockey sticks FOR THE FOIL BOXES.  Not to support them.  He cut to length, used a router to cut a slot in the wide edge, closed out the ends with 3D printed glued in plug, and installed it into the blank.   It looked perfectly fine, I'm guess there were many layers of carbon patch on top of the box, but I didn't ask about the layup schedule.

scratch that.  This morning I had a wonderful session on the spitfire 900.  One of those magic mornings where the sets were firing and breaking perfectly for foiling.    Its my favorite beach break in a cove and this morning the sand was totally working to create a nice channel all the way to the beach with waves peeling right and left into the channel.  Water was moving all over the place with the rip but I had my takeoff spot nailed with shore landmarks while everyone else floated out of position within seconds.   The sets came in well overhead and I was grabbing them a few hundred yards past everyone else and ripping back and forth across the channel to hit the whitewater on both the left and the right.

The spitfire handles speed extremely smoothly, but if you slow it down the turning/pivoting is incredible.  I was running a KD tail a lot like the axis progressives - I wanted to reduce the glide a little from the skinnies I've been running.  That totally worked this morning to keep things in control on a wave with a lot of power.  Pumping back out with this size and at my weight (#205) is workable but requires a lot of energy.

I was going to commit to ART Pro range only, but this morning makes me realize the time and place for a less efficient foil with good low end lift and great turning.  I'm sure I would be having just as much fun on my 1051 railing turns, but that foil just doesn't want to slow down and pivot in the pocket of the wave.

I'm keeping this foil until and unless I find something even better, too much fun.

Make offer.

I nicked a sea lion that got too curious or maybe territorial in Santa Cruz.  I saw it come towards me at an angle while I was going down the line on a wave and I tried to swerve away.  It turned too and I felt a little swipe but didn't fall.  It didn't come back.

Another time I hit something very firm and very alive at mach speed winging in Baja.    I can't explain how I know it was alive, I guess the feel of how it hit.  I got totally thrown off and whatever it was sped off before I could see what it was.  I assume for my own sanity that it was a large fish.

Looks like it gets out of the water in wind that can barely keep the foil in the air without pumping.    To me that's the threshold, I'm not sure why anyone would need a board any better than that.

Somebody must want this wing.  Its really a very nice wing for what it does, I moved to the 1201 - for me a better fit, but to be honest not necessarily better for everyone.  The 1099 is stiffer and more predictable in my opinion, the 1201 is a pumping machine, slightly better efficiency but also a little more squirrelly.

I already boxed it up just need to slap a UPS label on it.

Foil SUP / Re: SUPfoil is awesome
« on: August 24, 2023, 09:09:52 PM »
I run the Marlin at +4deg incidence with respect to the front wing incidence.  I use homemade leading and trailing edge v-blocks with a digital level to get things set up.  Getting the the tail angle dialed makes a pretty big difference, and its tricky because the axis fuselage tail mount doesn't match up with the KD tails so I had to sand some wedges out of plastic.

I have a theory that Axis fast follows everything KD's is doing - the progressive tails seem like direct copies of his original tails.   And new axis skinnies look exactly like the Marlin.    I almost bought an axis skinny, but decided to throw my money to the creator instead.  Same with the barracuda - it wasn't cheap, but I felt good sending my money to the fellow who pioneered the concept.

Foil SUP / SUPfoil is awesome
« on: August 23, 2023, 11:22:42 AM »
Its been quiet in here for a while.  I just wanted to take a moment and share that I think SUP foiling is awesome.  This morning's session really reinforced it once again for me.  Glassy, tiny, and not quite the right tide or swell direction for any local spots.   I went out anyway and ripped up every little ripple that came through.  At least 50 other people were out sitting around on their longboards relaxing (very very few waves ridden that I could see).    No less than 5 people came to talk to me as I was getting out of the water because it was just so obvious that foiling is amazing even in the most ridiculous conditions.

I'm paddling the 8' barracuda, axis 1201, 14" KD marlin.   Its a ripple catching and pump back out machine.    Absolutely incredible.

If I could just bottle up this feeling and distribute it, there would be far fewer mental health issues in the world.
