Foil SUP / Re: Supfoil beginner board size
« on: April 10, 2024, 02:14:49 AM »
Thanks to all who replied.  Ninja...that's exactly the advice I was looking for, many thanks.  This is for supfoil only, so, I'm going to try around 7'6  or even 8'0 x 31 x 145l.   The 6'6 board I tried was more for wingfoil and it was almost impossible to paddle!

Foil SUP / Supfoil beginner board size

Last time I tried supfoil it was on a 6'6 x 30 board and paddling was not easy even though I am an experienced sup'er.  Going to give it another go.  Should I get a similar size board and work thru the problem or go for something longer maybe 7'6 for an easier time? I am 6' 185lbs but late 60's so not looking for anything radical, and not a narrow downwind board.   Thanks

General Discussion / Re: JL Destroyer fin setup

Thanks for the input.  Finally got some waves to check things out for myself.  I tried Quad, Thruster, 2+1.  My favourite setup is the standard JL side-bite with a 7.5" Futures cutaway.   Loads of grip but still very loose.  I moved the centre fin around to get a good balance between paddling straight and looseness.   Very happy now, what an excellent board this is!!!

Thanks.  That's a lot of fin area but if it works for you that's great!  The waves I surf are typically weak, could be a lot of drag from them.

Thanks abmatt.  I have the fins so will try it as a Quad when I get time.  Want to get into using it as a thruster and a 2+1 first.  - I like those setups as I can slide the center fin up and down the box to get the exact feeling I want.

Thanks for the info.   Ii"ll try it like that and see how it performs compared with my current setup which is 2+1 with a 7 inch cutaway centre.   Anyone riding it as a quad?

Hi, looking to understand what fin setup's folks are using on the 8'5 Destroyer.

The front boxes are 16" up from the tail, so that suggests they are aimed more at  a 2+1 setup?   It also means the distance between the front and back quad boxes is quite long, so I'm thinking it may not turn so well in Quad setup?

Stuck waiting for waves so not able to do any meaningful testing.  Any input gratefully received.  Thanks.

Thanks both.
Wrightsville sounds interesting, maybe only 2 hours drive.  Outer banks looks much further, would probably need to do that over a couple of days.

Thanks again.

Hi,
I'm going to be visiting the Raleigh NC area a few weekends between now and the end of the year.  Can anyone recommend good rental locations nearby or on the coast. I'm experienced at Flatwater and Surf SUP.

Also starting to get into WingFoiling if you can recommend somewhere that gives lessons.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the replies, will try the suggestions, minus the one about the underwear PB.  (Though the smell is similar to some that hasn't seen a washing m/c in a very long time :-X).
Maybe a couple of good soakings in salt water (and drying-off after) will do the trick too.

Just bought a used wing.  Condition is great, but it's obviously been put-away wet and it stinks, seems like it's inside the struts that is the problem.  Any ideas what to wash it with, I know chlorine-based products are a big NO.   Thanks.

Gear Talk / Re: Winter wetsuit question

I'm straight over the North Sea from you, so same conditions.  I use 5/4, some of the guys use 6/5/4.  In mid-winter boots need to be 5 or 7mm, and gloves 3 or 5mm.  I prefer a  suit without hood as it gives more options - on a cruise I'll wear a ski-hat, small waves a neoprene skull-cap, and if the surf is up, a vest with integrated hood (one of the best things I've bought).  Hope that helps
