If I ever order one at my 165 lbs., I'd cut a few inches off the width and keep everything else the same. Single fin is what you want on such a ridiculously long board IMO, it's not like you'll be turning it from anywhere except with your back foot over the fin.
I regularly surf a custom 16ft gun-like downwind board. A 2+1 setup is best. With long boards you need the extra control and drive the side fins give you.

Hmmm you think? It probably depends on the design of the board, too. I'm imagining pivoty turns from the tail since the board is so long, similar to how I turn my 9'6 single-fin log (prone) from the tail... but maybe it's not the right comparison. Better to have the finboxes even if I don't always use them though, I suppose.

This is also my dream board for SoCal paddle adventures that include surfing. It was all about the DW board living up in SF bay area, but down here, a custom Sunova Search makes perfect sense.

While it's fun to surf race & DW boards, those thick rails will never carve and engage the waves like a low, surf rail. Creek that vid of you surfing the 14 is insane!

Gear Talk / Re: Paddle for surfing, what is a good choice?

Update - got the Werner Rip Stick 79 and had it out for a 2-hr session. Definitely works for me & checks all my boxes - shaft has good flex & coupled with the small blade, felt easy on my shoulders. No lack of power for me at only 165 lbs.

The leverlock adjustable with t-grip is nice, too, allowing for adjustability on the fly (unlike the hot glue I'd gotten used to). I cut the shaft so that it starts at head high & adjusts 8" up from there. Obviously the leverlock system adds some weight to the equation, but I like being able to adjust 1-3" between boards, etc.

The paddle weighs 20.3 oz., with the leverlock accounting for 6.75 oz of that total. Not in the super duper ultralight category, but I'm fine with it for surfing as I don't do distance touring or racing at all these days.

If I ever dial it in for one specific board, I can always order a carbon handle and glue it in, too. That would cut the weight substantially. So if you get the one-piece, it will be in the ultralight category.

Solid option in the low $300 range. I don't paddle surf that often these days so I didn't feel like dropping $400+ on a Black Project or new Ke Nalu.

20
Carbon fiber, made in USA. Nitro Medium blade (100" sq, more of a full-sized blade in today's trends). Weighs 23 oz.

Length adjustable from 74" to 81.5" in 1.5" increments. When taken apart, it is 34" long (see pics)

Easy to adjust "on the fly"

I purchased several years ago for travel, but since I never travel, it's only seen very light use.

A great travel paddle, back-up paddle, adjustable paddle, etc. Around $350 new in 2015.

Asking $175. Can ship at cost.

I think you'd probably be stoked on a Sunova Speeed from 8'10 to 9'5. I only had one session on a Speeed, but that board sure made waves easy to catch & you can milk every last ounce out of even the mushiest wave. And it takes a late drop too!

I used a Ke Nalu Xtuf(s) shaft with the adjustable Ergo T handle off & on for 6 years, from the learning stages to the intermediate stage in the surf. Started with a Maliko blade, went down to a Ho'ola 84.

I used Werners extensively throughout my paddling career, but always went back to the Ke Nalu for surfing because of the flexy shaft, smaller blade, & adjustable handle.

Lost the Ke Nalu a couple weeks ago (sh*t happens) & impulsively ordered a Werner Rip Stick 79 w/ their new leverlok adjustable system. The Werner shaft used to be too stiff, but apparently they've softened this one up. Hopefully it's good.

SUP General / Decent price on a Surftech Laird 10'0

https://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/spo/d/sup-board-10-laird-standup/6705482774.html

99% sure this board belonged to me for a year, and now the dude I sold it to is selling it. He's asking $525, not bad for a classic in good condition.

Personally don't love Tuflite, but this was a very refined longboard surf shape with thin rails that really engaged the wave. Pretty much what all the brands are doing now with their new longboard shapes, ironically.

I ended up purchasing a Pearson Arrow 9'0 custom based on my experience with this model.

Classifieds / Custom Kokatat Drysuit for "Medium-Tall" guy $500
« on: October 04, 2018, 04:32:10 PM »
Purchased a custom Kokatat Icon drysuit a few years back, then abruptly moved to SoCal. It is literally brand new, never been wet.

This exact model in the leaf color:

https://kokatat.com/product/gore-tex-icon-dry-suit-with-relief-zipper-and-socks-dsugicr

I had it custom-made as a size Medium with a few inches added to the arms & legs. A medium body with size large arm & leg, if I remember correctly.

My measurements : 6'2" tall, 32" waist, 40" suit jacket, 34" inseam pants & my wingspan = my height. I wear a Medium-Tall Oneill wetsuit, fits me perfect.

Just putting it out there. Happy to send actual pics, etc if there is any interest. Any questions on materials etc, please refer to the link as it's that exact model. Willing to ship at cost.

Random / Re: anyone else here done ketamine for depression, ptsd, etc?
« on: September 22, 2018, 08:14:23 PM »
I have bouts of depression and ancxiety, and recently tried microdosing LSD based on a recommendation from a friend who works in tech. Surprisingly, I found the results to be pretty similar to the anti-depressant I'd recently stopped taking. Ketamine sounds even more promising. Thanks for sharing.

SUP General / Re: Keep SUPs Out of the Ocean
« on: August 15, 2018, 10:35:39 PM »
46% of plastic in the ocean from fishing nets? That is FALSE. Over 80% comes from the land, & that is a conservative estimate. Where did you get that data from?! It is estimated that a garbage truck worth of plastic enters our ocean every minute... from land.

Blaming it on developing countries is a canard as well - it is the industrialized global north that sells products worldwide in plastic packaging. Countries like the Phillipines & Indo never had waste management issues before single-use plastic took over... it's not that they cannot manage plastic, it's that plastic is unmanageable. Look at a small island like Tavarua, it is literally drowning in plastic waste because everything they import comes in plastic packaging. There is no space for landfill. There is no infrastructure for recycling, nor would that fix the problem. That small island is not at fault, they simply show us a microcosm of a global problem.

In the U.S., we bury the problem in landfills thanks to ample open space, or send our trash to China to be recycled. And China no longer wants our trash, can you blame them?!

Just pointing this out to counter the idea that we're great stewards & they are not. That is uninformed, unfair, and most importantly, untrue.

There are no technological solutions to the problem of plastic. In fact it's much simpler - make less of it.

That starts with each of us beach-loving folk IMO. I have ditched single-use plastic in almost every scenario that I can control in my daily life, and it was not hard once I realized how important it was.

And it all started from paddling in the bay & seeing the problem with my own two eyes...

Apologies for being preachy but this is the work I've dedicated my life to, and surfers & paddlers are on the frontline for this necessary cultural shift IMO!

Classifieds / Werner Grand Prix S1000 SS (Small Shaft) 82"
« on: February 27, 2018, 07:23:31 PM »
Perfect condition. $200. 82" length. Easy to cut down & re-glue, you may have to buy a new handle though.

Hardly used, I just never tour/race anymore...

Purchased small shaft because I liked how my Ke Nalu felt, and this was a similar diameter. 100% carbon, US made, ridiculously light.

In San Diego. Will ship if buyer covers shipping.

Nice pics. Board looks great, looks pretty similar to my Pearson 9'0 which definitely killed my quiver. It's the only SUP board I ride these days, down from 4-5 at my most obsessed point.

Sunova SUP / Re: Why not a prone version of the Speeed?
« on: January 04, 2018, 09:59:22 PM »
Maybe it's the channels, but that board has some special sauce for sure. I would love to hear a side-by-side comparison of Speeed & Creek.

I only surfed the Speeed once but it left a sizable impression on me - stable, a wave catcher, FAST and a tail that offered incredible control. A magic board.

But I've been more into prone surfing lately which is why I posed the question. I messaged the Sunova website & received a detailed response from Martin a few hours later... long story short, they're working on it :)

Sunova SUP / Why not a prone version of the Speeed?
« on: January 04, 2018, 05:13:29 PM »
Sunova makes prone versions of the Shroom & Soul, so why not the Speeed?  I assume it would go well since the design is such a hit with everyone who rides it.

The Dynamo model looks similar at least.
