Gear Talk / new board advice - Pocket Rocket, Mana, World Wide?
« on: December 27, 2015, 05:55:00 PM »
Hey Zoners,

Hoping to get a little advice on my next board.  I’m currently riding an Infinity Trout 9’0 x 28 around 115L, longboard shape w/ thinner rails. At first I dug it, but I’m finding it’s just too much work in choppy conditions.  Before that I had a Hobie 9’0 x 30 137L, stability wasn't an issue.

I learned to surf on a SUP & have always surfed a longboard-style shape.  I want to try something more shortboard-inspired in the 8’ range that is STABLE & VERSATILE.  My surf skills are intermediate; I can get around on a wave, but there is still SO MUCH to learn. Surfing mainly San Diego beach breaks & reef breaks 2'-6’.

I’ve been looking at the Starboard Pocket Rocket, the 2014 Naish Mana 8’5, and the JL World Wide 8’5.  Also the Sunova Soul & Flow in the 8’ range have my attention.  All are around 120-130L & 30” wide.  I’m 6’2, 165 lbs (75kg).

Does it sound like I’m going in the right direction?

Any feedback appreciated!

Cheers,
M

Thanks!

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / Hobie Apex Pro 14'
« on: October 10, 2014, 11:40:56 PM »
Received my custom Hobie a couple weeks ago.  Sweet!

Custom made in CA.  14 x 25.75 x 6.25, 254L.  23.8 lbs. without fin.

My first impression: this thing looks bad-ass.  The level of detail and craftsmanship is really impressive.  Not sure how strong that vector net stuff is, but the board feels very stiff when pressed on.

The board is a real treat to paddle.  Instant acceleration!  She feels sleek, light, responsive, just effortless to go fast.  Good stuff.

She is stable, relatively.  My second time paddling her was at a race in the rough waters of SF Bay, and she handled predictably to the messy waters.  She paddled well upwind, downwind, and in side chop.  Chase Kosterlitz still beat me, but whatever  :P.  Heck, some dude in the surf class beat me!  The board is fast.  I, on the other hand, have some catching up to do.

Feels equally stable to some 27" boards I've paddled, except for the buoy turns... still working on those.  She catches bumps super easy, even tiny ones.

Big fan of the flat deck, too.  I've never felt any more stable in a recessed standing area.  Just more constrained.

Overall, I'm very happy with this board.  Not something I'll grow out of anytime soon.

The Shape Shack / Ding repair, Q-cell
« on: July 03, 2014, 08:28:53 PM »
Saw this ding repair vid from Starboard:

http://supzero.com/news.php?idd=3107675379601

Seems like he uses Q-cell powder to thicken the resin before glassing - anyone have experience with that?  Wondering if there is an advantage other than making it easier to work with.

He also glasses first then fills out after.  I've only done a couple repairs, but was taught to fill ding first then glass.  Or glass, fill, then glass over one more time.

Just dinged a board & this looked like a very efficient way to fix.

Would love to hear user's thoughts on that board.  I'm a Hobie fan but not much out there on the LB series.

Looking to move down from the SB Drive 10'5 into the 9' range, been looking at that & the Coreban Fusion (plenty of info on the Fusion here).

Gear Talk / How long is your paddle?
« on: February 20, 2014, 10:06:14 PM »
What is your paddle length for flatwater (racing, touring, even DW'ing)?  Has it changed since you started paddling?  What's your formula for sizing?

Interested in hearing where people are at these days, especially since reading a few articles recommending MUCH shorter length paddles than the previous 8-10" overhead formula that most companies use.

For example, http://www.ridingbumps.com/2013/08/25/the-new-rules-of-sup-paddle-length-determination/

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Thailand in January... surf?
« on: November 29, 2013, 04:28:43 PM »
Fellow Zoners & Zonettes,

I'm heading to Thailand in January to stay in Hua Hin for 1 week, then venturing off in search of other spots.

From what I've read there is not much surf in Thailand this time of year... but if anyone knows of any great paddling spots (surf OR other), I'd love some advice & suggestions.

Cheers!
