Events / Central Coast SUP Championships....September 18th
« on: August 07, 2011, 07:14:05 AM »
The culminating race of a six race Summer Series. This race will be in a sprint format, with point totals from the previous five races all going towards the Central Coast SUP Championship. Mens, Women's, and Jrs in Surf class, Stock, 14', and Unlimited. The 4th race is today, the 5th race is on August 28th, and the Championship is on September 18th. Still plenty of time to rack up some points.

All the races are in Morro Bay, CA....an easy drive from just about anywhere!

Gear Talk / Re: Angulo Surfa"s
« on: June 15, 2011, 01:58:47 PM »
At 180 lbs the 9'8" Surfa is right now my "funnest" board I surf! The 10'4" is a lot of board for me, but it's fun on little days. The 9'8" though slides into waves really easily, holds a nice tight line on the face, and turns like a dream....great board!

The Angulo Shaka 14' deserves a look...it is a great coastal cruiser and a great price.

Gear Talk / Re: Where are the various paddles made?
« on: February 06, 2011, 07:35:31 AM »
Werner is in Sultan, Washington. On the banks of the Sultan River, a NW classic class 4 river, and just off the banks of the Skykomish, THE classic western Washington whitewater river. They've been there since the 60's at least.

Kialoa, yes, Bend, Oregon.

Quickblade, Socal. I forget which city, maybe San Clemente? Honestly it all kind of blends together for me down there!

Ditto on the comments about avoiding paddles not made by experts. Paddles take a lot of stress and abuse per their weight/materials and MUST be built to exacting standards to last and perform well.

There's also a handful of wooden paddle makers in the US.....Sawyer (OR), Whiskeyjack, Bigstick......and probably other small cool local makers all over.

SUP General / Re: Jack La Lanne RIP

I taught a kayak rolling session to a mutual friend in Jack's pool last Fall. He was recovering from heart surgery, and sat at the edge of the pool and watched the whole thing. He called us pussies for putting on wetsuits (his pool was unheated and under 60 degrees!), and had some very astute obseervations about the kayak roll from a kinesiology perspective. He was a local character and added a lot of color to an already colorful region! RIP Jack.....

« on: January 22, 2011, 11:23:14 AM »
A great and econonimical board to check out is the Angulo Shaka 14'. $1600 gets you a 25 # board, $1400 for something a few pounds heavier. If you consider yourself a recreational racer this board is great....I think of it as a coastal cruiser. It's great in open water, fun, and fast. If you're a serious racer the Tiger Shaka could be a board, or go custom as other folks are saying.

The Angulo's can be test paddled in Santa Cruz and Morro Bay. Down here we do a free SUP Demo the second Saturday morning of every month. 9 AM til everyone's done!

Gear Talk / Re: board and paddle edge protection?
« on: January 17, 2011, 07:41:07 AM »
I prefer to protect the board, not the paddle! On my demos I've been using a 3" strip of XM Surfmore's clear traction tape. I don't think it provides very good traction, but it does a great job of protecting board rails! I sell it for $1.25/foot, 12' gives you 6' on either side of the board. When you're done with it it peels off easily and leaves little to no residue. As a bonus, when you protect the board you get to set it (gently still) on pavement, gravel, etc leaned up against your car and stuff!

For surfing the paddle rim guards don't have too much of a detrimental effect, but if you are also using the paddle for covering any real distance you will lose efficiency and increase blade flutter.

Gear Talk / Re: Starboard Brush Carbon Boards
« on: January 17, 2011, 07:32:17 AM »
There are times when a board can be too light, but there are more times a board can be too heavy!

I spent Thanksgiving in Baja with a whole fleet of Starboard and Jimmy Lewis boards, plus my 8'11" Joe Blair. Among the boards at my disposal was a brushed carbon pocket rocket. It was my favorite board until the conditions deteriorated, then it did become a bit of a handful as the wind picked up. So I would then jump onto my Blair. Then as the wind picked up even more (yeah...the conditions weren't great!) I found myself grabbing the JL Striker or the SB Blend.

I've also surfed the converse (9' x 30") in brushed carbon a bit. My take is you definitely feel it on the wave in a positive manner, and you definitely feel it waiting for the waves (in non-ideal conditions) in a negative manner, so you have to choose which is more important to YOU.....cost, ease of carrying, comfort waiting for waves, and performance on the wave. You prioritize these considerations according to your desires for your surfing and you'll be sure to choose the right board for yourself!

SUP General / Re: Where does SUP belong? 2010/11 Poll
« on: January 17, 2011, 07:24:41 AM »
There are only a very places that are traditional surfer's only....and most of them have a limited basis in legality. But they do have tradition.....San O north of Dogpatch figures huge in California's surfing history, with many of our living (and passed on) legends above a certain age having spent their formative years there. I could see a spot like the Wind and Sea shack being reserved also, and even first point in Malibu...it's more of a historical thing than anything else, and that history, IMO, does deserve respect. When SUP has a few generations under it's belt, we may have SUP only spots, but I would rather that by then we've all learned to tolerate one another a bit more than we do now and it's unnecessary :)

Gear Talk / Re: Good Board for Rental Fleet
« on: January 16, 2011, 04:18:57 PM »
I have a pau hana soft top 11' in my fleet and it is a workhorse. Most of the main SUP co's out now have come out with something for the rental/school fleets. I've been at this for 2 and a half years now, between planning and then opening my shop, and the rental boards I would get if I were getting right now, based on stability, durability, and price, and then lightness, are the Doyle Beefy D, the Angulo Suppah Slippah's, and the Starboard Slickskin. While everyone's mileage will of course vary, anyone who is looking to stock a rental fleet won't regret the time they spend researching those boards. I've been renting boards out for two seasons now, and came to SUP from nearly two decades in and around the kayak industry, so I'm not new to this.
