Hi Bryan,

Yeah i've seen some of your posts, It sucks not being able to demo a high end board or paddle in our neck of the woods.

Against some good advice(thanks Jill, Jim...), and WITH some other good advice from some Ace paddlers/owners, (Via some PM's) i did pull the trigger on the Ace. Because the reality of the very flat water (95% of the time) that i paddle, it should make paddling the 25" Ace doable. I might be biting off more than i can chew, but i do really need some challenge for my every day paddles. If i'm wrong I should have no problem selling it and i do have my other all around board for rougher waters.

I did commit to the Ace and it will be on it's way from the west coast shortly, i'd be glad to let you try it in Stone Mountain lake. (Hartwell or Laniar might be a little rough for me to start with)
I am buying it with the thought i will be using it as my everyday Super claim water (Stone Mountain lake) board, and race board if/when I or my 140 lbs son have a chance to race. I have a feeling that my son could one day be a competitive racer. This board may be better for him than me.

I did see you looking at some 14's also. To let you know, i found a couple of boards that you might be interested in. A 14' C4 V1 New $1200 locally (2.5 hrs from you 3.5 from me)  & the guy will let you demo it, A 14' 2010 Glide, and a 15' K-15 Craiglist, just came on today FWIW.

Wow it looks so inviting i just want to jump on that bad boy and go.

Whats the width, length, and weight?

The handle looks real big, like it would get in the way.

I assumed a higher cadence helps boards with less glide. And the better the board glides the less the cadence plays a role. Am i wrong?

 Does this board glide well?

I know finding a good used boards  in South Fla is a real treasure hunt. But it is possible. In Ga and a lot of other states it is almost an impossibility. The west coast has a huge used SUP market by comparison. I bought a used board shopping the west coast & even paying $200 for shipping, it is still cheaper than i can find a great board for around here.

Also look at you may look at Ebay i found my first boards that way, 2 very nice all arounder New Hulakai SUP's under $650 shipped. Jk surf was the seller.

At 130lbs you might be good with that inflatable in flat water. And at $300 you could use it while you save for a good board. Unless you damage it somehow you probably can resell it for $250-$300 when you are ready to buy your good board.

Yeah I'd say nether.
I'd say save up to around $600, in south Fl they do have some good used boards in that price range. Unless you are a light weight you may find both of those i bit difficult to paddle and get frustrated with the sport.

But of the 2, I'd go with the inflatable also. At least the price is right and you won't loose money if you want to resell it later. Inflatable's do have thier place were they shine.

I tried to find some info on "Black box surf" and no luck.

Do they have a web site or ...? I'm wondering what a board like that would cost?

Interesting note.

I found myself working about 10 miles from lake Acworth today and stopped by the only SUP rental business that i know of in that area. (they have been renting SUPboards for years but mainly sell used sports equipment)
I asked them if they had any safety tips for SUPing. The employee told me
"what you see is pretty much what you get. You just stand on it and paddle" .
So I asked what if i rent a board do you have a check list or something i can do to be safe. He said "well you should wear a PFD."

PS. The employees there were please about learning the correct direction to hold the paddle. They had been telling their customers to hold the paddle backwards  ??? .
OH yeah, I also mentioned how wind could leave you stranded if you fell and the board drifted away. That did not seem strike any cords with them. They said they do put a flag on the board so you will be able to see it if it better :-\

Maybe there should be a 101 course for folks who rent boards

Very sad for the families affected.

This also means that there might be tighter regulations in the future regarding life vests.  Being on the water can be dangerous without the proper knowledge and respect for mother nature.

We will see what the future brings us.  Until then, everyone stay safe!
That drowning really does not reflect much SUP safety, as it stands now (not know exactly what happened yet).
We have strange drownings every year. Another near by lake in Ga has a few drowning each year looking at this report can put a single drowning in context ... http://www.northfulton.com/Articles-c-2011-09-02-188836.114126-Eleven-drown-at-Lake-Lanier-this-year.html

You say "another" how many times has a SUper's died paddling?

Seems like this would be fluke. Especially in a lake that narrow/small, water stays pretty flat. Seems more likely to have had a heart attack While paddling.

I have been paddling a 11 x32 and my sons 10'30" nose rider longboard shape boards. Good all around board for learning and lending and fun in the surf even some tandem riding with small kids in small surf.

But like you said I do want a little bit of a challange, and I might be like you say bitting off more than I can chew with the 14 x25". That said there is hardly ever any used displacement boards for sale loacally so when I saw the Ace for sale and the is willing to ship I have to concider it.  The reviews on that board are very appealing. To bad that in a city as big as Atlanta Ga you can not demo any displasment boards :(

There does happpen to be 14' x 27" Glide I think it a 2010/11 locally I probably should concider. It just seems to have a lot of rocker for the flat claim waters I paddle in most of the time.

Great point Upwinder,

But I do pain on getting a displacement board. A 14'er so i was just thinking about the pro's and con's of a more challenging tippy board vs a more stable board, I did find a nice used Ace is why i ask.

I've been SUPing a few months & i love it.  I now realize that 95% of my paddling will be in flat water, but i  want to improve my balance for the occasional surf trip.

My idea is to get a challenging board for my everyday flat-water small lake workouts with the thought that it would improve my balance. Is this a good idea? The board i have in mind is the Starboard Ace 14' x25". I'm 190lbs and 6'4". ( I also hope to try some down-winding at some point, if this is possible on bigger lakes or anywhere in the southeast)

I only get to surf a few time a year and i have struggled in the past with with balancing in the bigger rolling seas with the heavy winds (i ended up kneeling for most of the time) I have no problem once i catch a wave, i just need to improve my ability to stay on my feet the rest of the time.

Thanks for any opinions

PS, I was given a tip to walk the board as i paddle, this has been a awesome tip. I feel a lot more comfortable because of that exercise. I even find myself paddling with one foot on top of the other for the challange.
I also started closing my eyes while paddling, not sure if that will help any with balance but it is interesting to see where you end up compared to where you think you should be :o.

Gear Talk / Re: Adding straps to a SUP
« on: July 21, 2012, 05:28:24 PM »
Thanks, So these guys can maneuver their feet into the straps once they catch a wave. Or do they maneuver their feet into the straps just before they catch the wave?

I could see the pros of being strapped in, it just seems tricky to get your feet exatcly to the right spot while trying to drop in. id like to see how this is done

+1
I don't get it ether? Does he just always paddle with his feet strapped ???

SUP General / Re: Any board repair people in Atlanta GA?
« on: July 14, 2012, 07:04:58 PM »
Thanks Guys,

5.5 hours to Charleston would be worth the trip if i could time it with a good swell or that board was more valuable.  But it a average board that i did plain to upgrade soon.

I will do the paint match thing and go for the Do It Yourself repair. I will look up some DIY repair videos ASAP.

Thanks Again :)

My son did not strap the board that he borrowed from me down >:(.
So needles to say it now has some damage. Mostly a nice deep road rash that took off some clear coat, color, epoxy, and a small 1" crack line. It looks like it was a nose first impact, The rash is in 2 spots, each about half the size of a dollar bill.

I might be able to do a half A-- job of a repair, but i am at a lost on matching the yellow color to make it look right.

So since we really don't have any board shops that i know of, i am putting this call to see if anyone may know of someone in the Atlanta area (within 50-75 miles of Atl) that can do a good board repair?
