Gear Talk / Re: Sup Gladiator Fin - Elite versus Hybrid

Thanks Larry, there is a lot for me to learn when it comes to fins... This fin stuff is very interesting.

It is hard to believe that a different fin that only adds 10-20 inches of extra surface area can cause a real measurable change in speed, considering the total surface of the board could be 1500 or more inches. It seems that little extra surface represents about 1/10th of 1% of the total surface area.

I know something are a feeling but are people actually able to measure these differences somehow?

Regarding cons, I was able to tame the ACE's manners in side swell by using a fin with larger area than the stock one, specifically at the tip.

Can you (or anyone) recommend a specific fin for the 14' x25" that might help with side swells...?

Downwind and Racing / Re: Do folks Downwind in the South-East US?
« on: August 23, 2012, 08:53:28 PM »
Yeah K1, I have be on that lake on boats where there were some 1-3' chop But i don't recall weather those conditions were just chop/white caps or actually rolling swells.

I never really paid attention before but it seem the only time we get wind on the lake is only 10 minutes before the sky opens up, or when we caught the edge of a hurricane.

« on: August 23, 2012, 08:31:39 PM »
I have only seen videos of guys Downwinding and it  looks awesome. So i wonder if DW is being done in the southeast US. I'm in Atlanta Ga and i'd love to give it a try it sometime. Just wondering where would i have to go to have a chance at riding some little Dw swells?

I am not clear on how DW is normally done.
It seems that folks are putting in at one location and taken out at another, is this correct?

I don't think our lakes are big enough but i guess if it is ever windy enough it could be possible.

I was just trying to answer the question the best I could with my personal experience.

The answer to most of your questions is no. But like I said in my first sentence "there are No local SUP stores in my area".  I wish I did have a those options, there are few thing i'd love to demo.

I did just buy a Starboard Ace from a SUP Shop where those good service options are available. The problem is I live 3000 miles from that Good SUP shop, so the reality is the purchase experience was almost the same. My low cost purchase on Ebay got me hooked on the sport, which lead me in a few short months to up grade and support a Good SUP shop. now my friends are buying SUPs. Is that a bad thing for the sport?

Like you say, get what you can afford have fun upgrade when you can.

Thanks for all the info. The board in Question was 550 with a paddle. Brand new.

We have no local shops in my neck of the wood so I'll be a fly also...

Anyway, I bought 2 Ebay boards (Hulakai boards, I don't think i'd call them "no name"?) 11'x 32" and a 10 x 30" for $550 on Ebay, plus shipping. I really like them. Of the 5 boards my family now have, i can say i'll the 11' Hulakai well be around the longest, it's a great long board style shape and real fun to walk, nose ride, tandem rides, and all around board. Very user friendly, i let my friends, ( first timer's) use it most of the time. The 10 footer is not as versatile so i'll be selling it soon for a better short board. Im' sure i won't loose much on the sale. It was good beginner board for my 140 lbs son. the only con is the boards did not have vent plugs.

I was concerned about the construction quality, that was until my son drove off without strapping down the boards. The 10' took a header into the asphalt at about 20MPH from the top of a SUV. The real damage was not bad considering, the road rash was the main issue mainly cosmetic. I probably could have got away without using any fiberglass for the impact repair. That to say, it seems well built to me.

Now that i'm hooked on SUPing, i am shopping some Big name brand boards. So for me buying a cheap board on Ebay was good for my pocket and good for the top quality board brands also. seems like a Win win to me?.

All kidding aside, DurhamSUP review speaks volumes.

"I also like when I hand it off to someone else to try and they don't notice a big difference at first. Then I give them back their own paddle a little later, and the look on their face is priceless. You would think I just handed them a 2x4."

Bill, I was really looking find a reason why the paddle sucks toads, but I just couldn't find one.  ;)

How about the fact, you have to paddle a lot longer to get a good work out.
How about, the only color they come in is black.
How about, all the people bug-en you to try your Paddle.
And how about that guy who makes them, I hear he's fat & really old!

So yeah they do suck toads,

Until I can afford one they do really SUCK TOADS!  >:(

Gear Talk / Re: Bic Ace-Tec 11'6" vs Surftech Universal 10'6"
« on: August 17, 2012, 06:18:34 AM »
I saw a damaged Bic Sport board yesterday at a warehouse liquidator.
The kind of place that buys lost and damaged stuff from shippers. They had a new Bic Sport 10'6  Ace Tec Wahine. The board was damage bad, a 5" X 1" chunk was ripped upwards on the tail.

Looking at that damage got me thinking,
1. How would someone do a good repair on that?
2. Does that type of foam absorb water faster than the "normal" EPS foam? (to me, it just looks  like it could get water logged fast ??? )

For me, the Surftech would be the easy choice.

"btw, is there any difference between the 2012 and 2013 Naish glide 14 ?
I also have a feeling the SB CR will be updated soon. ?"

No change in the Glide other than loosing the black nose color and a slight change in the deck grip (as far as I know) and Starboard have dropped the Coast Runner from their 2013 range.

DJ
The Naish 2013 web site says the new glide has lower noise (less rocker?) and softer rails. http://www.naishsurfing.com/2013/glide-14-gs/

Looked to me like someone having a bit of fun whilst displaying awesome balance and coordination, just the thing this 5 week old newbie needed to see whilst stuck in a office waiting for a meeting.

Definitely goin to try tomorrow morning!..........expect to get wet often!

Christo
Go for it, the best tip i have gotten was to practice walking the board.
Had i seen that video from the start i would not of limited myself in what i should try to be able to do.

I went 2-3 months paddling and never fell off in our lake. Started walking the board a few weeks ago and started falling while attempting some of that stuff.  Now i feel A LOT more comfortable on the board.

Now that iv'e seen that video i will be turning it up a good bit. Can't wait to try a 360 in the surf.

REI is the only place iv'e found that carries a displacement type boards within 300 miles. They have the Naish 12'6" glide and some lairds boards in stock. Plus they can get you the14'er and whatever else they carry with No shipping cost, plus a 10% rebate for members makes it a practical option in this neck of the woods.

The only good source for info about SUPing (which board...) around here Is on the Standup zone and the guys you meet on the water.
