At your age, don't be afraid to go small.  You will have to do some work to figure out the balance point while kneeling but that will come very quickly and then you are set.  It is an expensive mistake to be too conservative and get a board you will out grow quickly.

People who are pleased after downsizing boards because they had no trouble did not downsize enough in my opinion.  You should have some struggles in the beginning when you change to higher performance equipment (board or foil).

Based on my personal experience and watching friends, for a standard knee start in well powered conditions, I don't think -10 is any more difficult than +10.  Experienced wingers have no problems knee starting -20 boards.  My next board will be -15.

Again, my comments are for knee starting in well powered conditions.  If it gets light or you have to surface ride back, then you will be happier with positive buoyancy.

Also keep in mind that surface area matters when you are considering boards of similar volumes.

It sounds to me like you are asking how small you can go and still comfortably knee start.  I am seeing intermediate skilled, middle aged people using -15 to -20 boards.

cool video.  fun to watch

Update after 5 session on my 75L board.  The shape works well with my HA foil and I am very pleased overall.  Finally a board on which I can stand as far forward as I want.  Really helps with hard carving and pumping.  Only minor negative is the handle.  There is no "ledge" to grip.

Yep, it has been windy.  Last couple of days I have been on my 2 m at Swell City and been ok to a bit overpowered.  Biggest waves I have winged on.   It has been amazing fun but I am at my limit until someone makes a smaller wing.

.........

Some of the comments here suggest that having foil closer to surface captures more swell. This is interesting to me (since I am trying to capture more swell energy). This is almost certainly more relevant on a 18" foot swell than a swell that is 10 feet crest to trough. But, I am intrigued that maybe 91 cm is counter-productive for harnessing swell. Maybe I'll put the 75 back on (or grab an 85cm to experiment with).

.........

In the small stuff, the depth of foil makes a MASSIVE difference in glide.  Just play with it and you will see.   I accept the occasional ventilation as the price to pay for riding high to capture that energy.

Time for a update.  The Journey continues.  Brief summary for those who don't remember or want to read all the details:  My wife took up winging with essentially zero experience with any board or wind sports.

Strange, but it took quite a while for us to figure out which her strong side was.   Ultimately, right foot forward declared itself.  After progressing to foiling consistently on both sides, she hit a major challenge in gibing and riding toeside.  Many, many, many tries and falls.....more lessons....more falls.....broken thumb (all healed now)......finally some successes.  She is now gibing consistently on her strong side and dialing in this riding toeside mystery.  On her weak side, she is foot switching on the surface.

She started on a 7-4 board and is now down to a new 5-5 Armstrong board.  She is loving the sport and hopefully the worst is over.

I’m famous! Check out my cameo in the review riding the BRM.

I threatened not to give back the demo unless it was a trade for a new board so I was able to get a board early release. Sharing some footage for the review helped I think.

Weight wise it’s 10.1 lbs compared to my 74L FSM at 10.8 lbs, so pretty light!  -5 liter/kgs and it feels great.

If I had unlimited time and resources, I don’t think I could have come up with a better shape.

Nice clip of you Graham.  We seem to like similar stuff like the 1125 and BRM wings and I suspect this will also be true for the new boards.   Reported weights for the 75 L and 88 L are 5.2 and 5.8 kg, respectively.

Yes, I have either owned or tried all the wings I mentioned  and the Mantis

We have a 75l and 88l arriving next week.  May be the first ones at the Gorge

Any more feedback on these? My beloved 5m swing has recently exploded and I'm on the market for a light and minimalistic wing. I can't demo and am almost pulling the trigger online, but a bit worried about the handles/mini-booms...

I would consider the Swing v2, Strike, BRM W2 and the PPC.  They are all pretty light and very good wings

Looking forward to using my new Armstrong board which should arrive next week.  I am currently on my 4th custom board and still not able to get the mast forward enough.  It is about time someone figured this out.

My guess is there is a defect in the board under the pad, expanding air from the board is creating the bubble. Naish has always been good with warranty so definitely worth contacting your dealer.
I am not understanding this.  Where is the air coming from?

Bigmtn, today is a big East day.  Hope you are still around.  Take your small wings and fastest foil.

Had a great session at Swell yesterday on PPC 2.8 and Armstrong 1125 HA. Unfortunately, didn't see you guys. Dialing in my hard cutbacks with some successes despite ventilating a few times.
