had a cheap backcountry ozone snowkite harness that wasn't getting much use.. pulled the leg straps off and just threaded the lightweight adjusting waist strap through an old short harness hook/pad... tied my reel leash to the back (removed the metal snap clip and just put a larks head of dyneema which connects to a "stopper ball" connected to board leash plug.... this was an experiment that worked perfectly from the get go... from winging freshwater reservoirs /lakes in Utah to 10 days nuclear gorge Conditions to Virginia Beach Atlantic storm riding and now Great lakes western New York breezy autumn days.
wish someone would make a lightweight composite plastic hook as we just don't need the strength of a kitesurf hook for Winging..

can't imagine riding my long sessions WITHOUT a harness option... it's great tu be able to stretch the neck, adjust the hat, fiddle with the camera... with one hand while hooked in. NEVER felt like I was going to damage my board climbing on.. just adjust your technique accordingly.

You're totally right Dave... I got it ONLY thinking of kiting but of course we're all mad scientists at heart and I just HAD to try it yesterday I was so powered!

It worked! But yes you have to keep speed up... Was thinking of the Kai Lenny video when he decided he was going to start making his backflips... And he was using a tiny little foil... And just figured it was worth a shot.

In big choppy unorganized waves it definitely was not the best option but on a flatter more con distant sea I bet you could get used to the stall speed and really start to enjoy it.

So do you use the 400 stab with your 633 when kiting?

Hey Moses Wing Gang!

This forum helped me so much the past year as I was trying to decide what gear to buy. COVID and gear scarcity in May changed my mind from Axis to Moses. Got a decent deal on W1100 and 790 and a demo Fanatic 5ft4.

DROVE TO THE gorge from Utah and really learned trial by fire style. The W1100 is a great tool light wind but actually very controllable in 25 knots even in Hatchery swell. 790 is dreamy smooth but SOMETIMES seems a bit slow.
Since my goal was to have just ONE MAST/FUSE setup for winging and kite foiling... I tried to kite with the 790 but even shimmed and with extra holes drilled in the carbon mast baseplate WAY TO MUCH lift for kiting.. So found a used /repaired 679 and bought.

Today... Now visiting family in Virginia.. Went to the ocean cause its blowing stink from Hurricane Teddy pulling the polar wind down.. Brrr... I was using my f1 4.2 and the 790 and kept breaching while gliding down the large swells so decided to FINALLY try the 679 for WING.

I thought I'd need help to plane off with such smaller surface area so moved mast forward.. MISTAKE!

This foil obviously wants Power and speed to lift... But since it was a gusty 20-25 knots I HAD those ingredients.. So the speed was definitely HIGHER but the lift generated seemed WAY MORE than the 790! Not really sure why..?? Is the foil itself angled somehow different (more bite/lift) then the 790?

Really had to I put feet very far forward... Too tired to go in and walk back to the car to get tools to slide mast backwards(aft)... So just rode forward on the board for my last hour... But I can attest that for my 85 kilos with the 4.2...the 679 gets up fairly easy in 20 knots and it's obviously way faster /looser/rises up to breach crazy fast with gusts /big waves/carvy/tippy/fun.

Can't wait to try with mast 3/4 back.. Maybe will shim the stab a bit as I ONLY have the 450 right now and I think that's contributing to the crazy lift with higher speed.

Can anyone suggest a smaller moses stab for the surf fuse that can work with 790 and 679?

Awesome day today though!
I thought knee starts were tough @ Rufus and the Hatch but... Holy Dawg!

The Atlantic Ocean during a storm was WAY WAY tougher! I think I could actually now go the full 8 seconds on a mechanical BULL after today's practice!

Gonna start wearing my spurs to the wing foiling sessions from now on.

Go big or go home!

Thanx guys.. Exactly the answers I was looking for. Love this forum.

Been kite foiling 4 years. Just beginning my journey into wing ding. Have several 90cm alu masts. Had been thinking about the 75 to 80 cm range on any new foil setup ive been researching. However my ultimate goal is to be able to just switch up the front wing to be able to change between a kite sesh and a wing sesh.

I understand that the "pumping up onto foil" dynamic is very different between kite and wing.. And ive yet to try winging on a 90cm mast.. However some videos of guys in big surf seem tu show them using 90s.

Any reason why pumping up onto foil might be EASIER on 75s and 80s or is just "convention" of wing surf at this point that everyone uses 75s?

Last question... Anyone with experience using the NEW 2020 FANATIC HA Aero foils?

Thanx and good winds to all!

Wow Dwight I never would have thought that the HEX would be a better option than TORX!! You are saying that 100% because its deep enough that the wrench doesnt fall out when you spin it...whilst the TORX falls out easier? Here I was searching all over hells half acre to replace my Hex bolts with TORX...but here in mexico nobody sells TORX bolts and even less in the stainless Steel option.

You havent found then that the TORX tends to STRIP out less than Hex? I get the message that the TOOL should be stainless as well (another impossibility here...id have to buy online and have it imported.)

THanx for the great tips!

Also want to thank all for their observations and advice. I thought maybe i might have been focusing on keeping the board FLAT (old Wingsurf habit) so on the last outing i really actually TRIED to lean the whole rig windward... Not much change really. Also, the mast is only 60cm so maybe if it was 75 if have more leeway for leaning..?

For sure Bill Nailed it that the Swing.. At least the 6mt,does "backwind" quite early... Many times i find myself actually PUSHING forward with my front hand to keep the LE area from fluttering. Would this be a function of the LE DIAMETER more than the camber?

Anyway... Have to also admit that the exact area where I've most been able tu practice does have a notable current going same direction as the wind... And it's very blowing southeast the entire month... The two days i could actually go wing in another location without this "venturi" effect between reef and sandy point... I had an easier time getting upwind.

Foil winging truly is a melting pot of different sports and it's cool to see different perspectives from people coming from different board and sailing sports.   For me, snowboarding to kiteboarding, riding switch/ goofy etc feels natural, automatic, and totally necessary. Riding an entire session without changing stance seems awkward and exhausting!  I can't wait to get more water time on some downwinders.  You are doing great!

Once I learned to keep the wing under control, adding a harness and harness line seemed like an obvious upgrade to distribute the pull down closer to my center of gravity for increased upwind performance and arm endurance, same as kite and windsurf.  I totally recommend it.  I started with my kite waist harness but decided it's a bit overkill for wing since there isn't the same surge of force like you get from a power stroke on a kite.  I recently made a simple waist belt with harness hook from a Dakine option spreader bar.  Loving it so far.  I normally climb on the board with a pushup so the hook won't hit, but the hook is flexible and can easily be slid to the side for prone paddling or climbing on.  I prefer to hook in after up and foiling as to not interfere with pumping the wing to get up first.

Awesome belt /hook setup Mr Glorp! That is totally what I'm planning on building... Can't believe none of the old kiters in Mexico kept their old Reel leashes.. Been asking about but guess I'm gonna have to buy a new one. I totally BHATE HATE HATE regular surf leash for this sport!! Hearing and feelung the damn thing bouncing and dragging behind me and catching seagrass and occasionally getting wrapped around the foil really puts a damper on the fun.

Seems kind we could almost get by with a hard plastic /Teflon type hook as well.. I. Agreed that windsurfers using harness Hooks rarely do serious damage to their boards... But I've definately dinged up the side of my new foil sup board from climbing on.. Especially once I start getting really tired.. Even though I try my best to climb over the deck pad... It is a bit of an issue..

Thanx to all for the quick replies! I knew I could count on this group!
1) the wing has PLENTY of pressure.. In fact.. I actually thought maybe my habit of pumping it extra rigid might somehow be the problem... But logic just doesn't let me entertain that idea very seriously. Do any of you ONLY put 6lbs in your Swings? If just seems way too floppy /bendy with only 6psi.
2) I can understand that the 6mt swing can never be a super efficient high upwind angle pointing machine... With a mast the size of an elephant leg there's got to be some serious turbulence when trying to point high... And I regret having Mentioned my pointing ability with kite/foil in my original question because OBVIOUSLY they are 2 different animals.. But im not saying "I can't point as high as kiting or windsurfing.. I'm saying " I'm having a bitch of a time pointing PERIOD... AND this ain't my first Rodeo so WTF? hehe..

For sure this Naish foil is much slower than my already slow sshot i76... So could the reduced speed play a big role in pointing ability?

Do most of you on "kneestart" boards regularly ride with your foil masts in the farthest forward position? I really wasnt able to pump onto a plane in any other position of the foil and then saw a video where Nuzzo of REAL mentioned he had the same experience... But a few times when nicely powered I DID wish I could have easily changed the mast position to a slightly farther aft setting to see what effect it might have had. Could a few centimeters slide posterior in the mast track make a huge difference in pointing?

Intrigued to try the 2nd gen wings for sure.. I envision built in "reflex" and much thinner, more rigid masts and booms in the near future.

Ps.. Tried all the available lengths for the F1 harness line... Even made extra larks head attachment points for father forward and aft... Finally tried adding 2 inches to the total length of the "standard" with an extension and felt that to be the optimum setup.

You know I'm totally baffled also on WHY it's been so hard for me to point upwind. ?

Was a windsurfer for 7 years, been kiting for 20 and kite foiling for 4 years nonstop. Have a 6mt Swing and was plenty powered this weekend 15 to 18 knots.. Using harness line occasionally to rest the arms and played with the length quite a bit... But it's been really challenging to get upwind!
I find it's quite easy to get to a point where the wing is stalling out.. Seems like the "sweet spot" for generating power at an upwind Angle is very reduced.. No matter how "vertical" I have the wing.. It seems that can only really sheet in like 5/8ths of total because after that it seems to lose power and begun to stall. Man I tried every damn permutation this weekend.. From changing foot placement, foil Mast placement, length of harness line, wing more overhead, wing farther back, I could do it but NOT EVEN CLOSE to the upwind angles I can get foiling!

1 caveat... I'm used to 90cm mast with the sshot infinity 76 while kiting and since I can't get that thing to fly WITH THe wing I've been using a loaned Naish Jet 1650 on a 60cm mast. For sure the Naish is a fat, slow wing made mostly for prone surf pumping... But doesn't seem like that should Hinder my upwind performance SOO MUCH.. or does it?

Damn lockdown! I'd pay double to be able to have the AXIS 1010 right now... Seems like a higher aspect fast wing should get me pointing higher. Any comments, opinions, or tips GREATLY appreciated!!

Hey crew...been lurking here a LONG time and have sent PM to several of the most prolific posters...very thankful for their patient and well thought replies...but Im left still with some doubts and HOPING that one of you can help to clear these up.

Been kiting 20 years, second decade of that mostly dedicated to wave riding... and foiling all the light wind stuff for 4 years. The past 15 months almost exclusively using the Sshot Infinity 76 foil...1500 sq cm with 10mt and smaller kites in waves/swell.

Wondering WHICH of the Axis foils would MOST replace the FEEL, pump, glide, carves of the i76 and maybe give a bit more top end as well? Would that be the 900? the 1000? I KNOW AXIS has some dedicated kitefoils...but really not interested in going super fast nor pointing as high as possible. I want pump and carve and delicious transitions...I want the deep pow pow snowboard experience while in crystal blue waters.

Have been monitoring the development of the 660 "gullwing" foil...which Adrian Roper says is his favorite for kiting. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY APPROXIMATE IDEA WHEN  THE 770 and 880 "big brothers" to the 660 will go into production? Any rumors on the approximate Sq CM sizes of those wings? WOuld either of them be more similar in performance to the i76 for kiting or WINGDING use?

Have begun to WINDWING and almost 100% convinced that an Axis Ssurf with 75 cm mast, ultrashort fuse and 1010 front wing will be the ideal setup for our sub 20 knot winds, a 6mt SWING and my 90 kilos. However, I was hoping to also have a smaller, more carvy FOIL from AXIS which perhaps I could use on a powered WINGDING day and also that would be an upgrade for my old i76 for kiting. Would the 880 eventually, perhaps, fit the bill in that regard? Although I do love my old i76 I feel its time to evolve and of course Id like to be able to have everything on the Ultrashort Axis fuse platform and be able to start to sell off some of the older foiling gear to make money to buy the new stuff.

Thank you very much to ALL of you who have helped so many of us "lurkers" to make more educated decisions as we get stoked on this new niche of our wind addictions! Special thanx to the ADMIN and DW and Bill who post videos and fotos. This moment in time reminds me so much of when i was scouring the internet looking for info on KITING back in 2000 as i prepared to buy some used gear and see if it could ever replace my beloved windsuring as a new, lighter wind, "not so condition specific" sport. What a GREAT adventure THAT has been for 20 years now and looking forward to FOILING sports taking me into my golden years healthy and happy and forever stoked.

Cheers to all and...

Good winds,
