Gear Talk / Re: Futures Jaime Mitchell vs Gerry Lopez
« on: June 13, 2011, 04:48:24 PM »
Try the GL Thruster or Quad fronts  (same) with controller rears. Evan from Tomahawk suggested it in another thread and it is my favorite quad setup. More bite/drive than the PSH with good release thanks to the controller rear.

I'm running the same set up on my 10' Hull Ripper. Works great, I like it better than the Panchos. But I weight 220 lbs, a lighter guy might find them a little stiff.

I've been liking the Jamie Mitchell Thruster set-up on my sub-vector. Less drive than using the Gerry Lopez quads but turns a lot better. It definitely changes how the board surfs.

Seriously, is this really an issue? Tow-in 'surfers' have no place in a line up with anything self-powered. If Towner paddled into that wave then Poto pulled a dick move, I don't think there is any question there, regardless of how it worked out in the end. But that doesn't sound like what happened. Jetskis are for catching waves that can't be caught any other way. If you are towing in and a dude can paddle in and drop in on you than you have no business being there at all.

That's my sister you're talking about.

There, I said it...

As for the boards, I've seen them at the Waipo outlet. Not sure if they have shipped them out for a wider release outside of Hawaii yet. They are pretty much All Arounders with hull noses and chimes. I get the feeling these are more targeted at the entry level market, board plus paddle for $899 I believe. Not sure about the construction, I doubt its boardworks. The paddle is almost identical in shape to the methane but fiberglass, so heavier and weaker. If I was looking to buy my first board to get into stand up, this would be a hell of an option, as it stands I'm going to wait patently and hope that some boardworks hull rippers come down the line eventually.

The lifeguards at Waimea are the best in the world. I can't think of anyone who could contend. No question they make a huge difference, especially since Waimea probably sees more surfers than the Peahi and Mavericks combined, especially the ones that aren't as ready to for big waves as they think they are. You know how off duty cops do security? Off duty lifeguards do Peahi.

Between the cold water and the rocks, Mavericks might be a more dangerous spot. And between that and the apparent 'no sleds' rule I'm sorry to say it makes sense that they lose people there. Waimea is watched by the very best, Peahi is where the best go on their day off, or at the very least the ones there were trained by the best. Mavericks on the other hand is in California, and that should tell you everything.

Don't know if there are that many scotch lovers on the Zone, but while I have a lot of nice single malts gathering dust in my liquor cabinet in Portland, in Hood River and Maui I drink Famous Grouse. 1/4th to 1/10th the price and I swear to God I like it better than some of the very best.

Send them dusty bottles here Bill. I'll take care of them. FWIW, I'm loving Aberlour A’bunadh right now.

Gear Talk / Re: How do you get glide?
« on: March 10, 2011, 04:55:15 PM »
I Couldn't find the Dave Parmenter article you were talking about but I'd be interested in it. Let me be clear, I'm looking for a board for riding bigger waves. I've been using a similar technique of moving forward on the board to get down the wave. I'm already on the nose trying to get down some of these waves, pretty well sweet spotted. So give very similar volume and width, does the extra parallel rail length of a 10'6 over a 9'3 make a huge difference in terms of getting down waves?

Gear Talk / How do you get glide?
« on: March 10, 2011, 12:01:25 AM »
What makes a board glide well? How much of it is a function of shape versus displacement? I'm on a 9'3 Subvector and I don't get enough glide to make some bigger waves that guys on bigger boards are making. Something like a PSH 10'6 gun seems like it would be perfect but when I look at the displacement they are really close, like 138L VS 140L. Would a change is shape make a huge different or do I really need to be looking at a bigger board volume wise to get on bigger waves?

Try the GL quads on the front and the Controllers in the rear.  It's awesome.

Isn't that pretty much what the PSH quads are? They sure look like it.

Its part of just about any form of distance race in one way of another. No getting around it and just about impossible to ban. You've got to learn to live with it. You can't just race hard, you have to race smart. I wonder if we'll get to the point where we have race teams.

That girl in the silver bikini is pretty fine. I could do with a few more of those in the line up. or on the beach...  ;D

I do think its odd C4 hasn't really done much recently. That said, at 220 lbs (100 kgs) I go to it over my PSH ripper on choppy days. For a board that is the same dimensions and volume on paper I find it is so much more stable. Maybe its a weight thing.  ???

Definitely one of the better gopro videos I've seen of any sport. I wonder what it would look like if you painted the shaft of your paddle green and greenscreened it out?

I'm another tail handle fan. I don't always use it, but if its crowded out in the line up I think you owe it to everyone else. Its not like its an expensive option.
