Gear Talk / Re: Infinity RNB PPVC
« on: November 13, 2021, 03:31:13 PM »
I bought an 8'8 RNB (carbon... not the pvc I originally was aking about) off craigslist a few hours ago, immediately got it wet since there were chest-high waves here today, and I have to say... I'm unsure. It's a GORGEOUS board. So solidly built and very lightweight - I'd guess around 17lbs and it feels bombproof. It was ridiculously stable, which was really nice as there was a bit of a side chop. But I struggled with the takeoff and bottom turn because of that wide split tail. All of my current and previous boards were rounded pins and I really love that tail shape because it doesn't get pushed by the wave at takeoff, can bottom turn super easily, and can turn from the middle of the board. It seems like I'm going to have to really work on my foot positioning throughout the entire wave because of this tail. I finally had better luck on takeoff if I got in surf stance as soon as the wave had me gliding and put my rear foot way back. But I definitely wasn't confident with my bottom turn by the end of the session... I'm used to takeoff and turn, but with this board I wasn't quite getting it there and ended up missing the pocket on most waves. Any tips from those who ride wide split tails after coming from a rounded pin?

The other thing I didn't love was the handle. Even though the board is light, the handle isn't deep enough. You can just get your fingertips curled. I love my Jimmy Lewis handles where you can get your whole finger in there. It makes a huge different when you have to walk a lot.

Interesting. If that's the case I'll just stick with my JL Destroyer 8'5. I was hoping to pick up something a little longer, wider, and with more volume for the winter when I'm wearing my heavy rubber.

If they start making the New Deal in this less expensive PVC construction, I'm all over that 9 footer. DAVE BOEHNE, ARE YOU OUT THERE?  ;)

Any thoughts on the Infinity RNB PPVC? Anyone surf both the pvc and the carbon versions and have a comparison to share? I'm thinking about picking up an 8'8 in the pvc construction - seems like a solid board at a good price. I have always preferred rounded pintails so I am curious how that tail will perform.

The Round Nose Blurr is one of our most popular performance surf designs of all time. Perfect blend of performance vs stability and a noticeably FAST board. This design bridges the gap between a traditional shortboard style outline and the  inspired parallel rail boards. This board allows riders to ride shorter and narrower board while maintaining similar stability of a board 1-2" wider. Features a slight single concave and a deeper double between the fins. Very versatile in the small stuff and can mix it up in some juice as well with the 5 fin option.

This construction is made up of ultra light CAD designed and CNC cut stringerless EPS foam blank that is wrapped in a high grade E glass shell and reinforced with PVC for strength and integrity. We add carbon for linear strength and flex control. This construction is very strong, durable and the way we have sandwiched up the materials together has proven to be performance driven. All finboxes and handles are installed with a high density foam anchor then capped for a nearly bomb proof install. Light, Strong and Performance minded.

Usually when you see waves like that the area is freckled with surfers. Is that the Oregon Coast or Cape Cod? Kind of looks like Oregon though the swell isn't coming from three directions.

Looks like a certain bay somewhere on Boston's north shore between Marblehead and the city.  ;)

it's sold out... the 2020 version was on there for most of the summer for a good price... i ultimately didn't pick one up because i want something a little shorter and a little skinnier with a bit more nose rocker... looks like a fun stable board and lower volume than its dimensions would suggest because it's only 4" thick

if anyone has one of these boards in the northeast id love to water-swap my creek portal or starby some day
I am on the Destroyer 8'5 and would be up for a swaparoo some day. I'm in Newburyport. Shoot me a msg if you wanna make it happen. I've always wanted to hop on a Creek. I'm 5'11 and 190lbs but I've never been on anything shorter or less volume than this 8'5 @ 130L.

North - I don't think the rocker plan is any different between the 8'5 and 9'8.  And I think you're right about the photo maybe being misleading... I see in that photo a little rolling swell is just under the board, lifting the front out of the water.

BTW, how does your 8'5 Destroyer compare to your old 8'6 Super Frank in wave catching on smaller slopey waves?   I'm considering adding a smaller board.
On small waves the 8'6 Super Frank was always a blast. The 8'5 Destroyer is also super fun on small waves, but I have to give the slight nod to the SF because it begs to be turned and skate around at high speeds even on a 2' wave. Again, the Destroyer can have tons of fun on a 2' wave as well, but the SF wins that category by a hair. On any waves over 2' I give it to the Destroyer. I've ridden it on everything from ankle slappers to a few feet overhead and it charges. Bottom turns, gunning down the line, or tight cutbacks on the lip - it does them all with confidence. I owned both of them for a brief period of time after purchasing the Destroyer and after my first outing with the Destroyer I know I was selling the SF. I bottom turned, came up the face, pivoted down, and had zero feeling of "I might not make it". I often found myself falling or losing balance when surfing vertically or making an aggressive bottom turn with the Super Frank and I have to attribute that to the square tail (as opposed to the rounded pin on the Destroyer).

BigZ - I'm also curious what you're using for fins on your Destroyer 8'5.

I started off with the stock setup (massive 8" center and 4" sides) but quickly swapped the 8" center for a 6.5" and like it much better. I just plugged in a set of 4.5" Gerry Lopez GL1s all around and am curious how that will work out. I'm also curious to try it in a quad setup on smaller/mushier days for speed.

I'm loving the board, at times my 5'11" 190lb body finds it a bit unstable in wind and chop, but overall it's SOLID. I've had it out in anything from ankle slappers to a few feet overhead and it's just so comfortable in all of it. Gunning down the line, bottom turns, lip smacks, etc... it does it all with confidence.

Lately I've been thinking about a new board with a little more length and width to combat the front-back/side-side balance issues on choppy days and for winter when I'm weighed down by my winter gear... and I'm wondering about the Destroyer 8'10 (and selling my 8'5). If anyone in New England has one and would be willing to get my jump on it, please let me know.

Wow, the nose rocker on that 9'8 is heaps more than my 8'5. I guess it makes sense since the length difference is over a foot, or maybe it's just angle of the photo. There are times I wish my 8'5 had more nose rocker, or was a bit narrower up there, to avoid pearling... but then there are times I've got 5 on the nose and I'm happy with it just as it is.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow so we'll see! It's at a price where I could resell without losing a dime if I don't jive with it. I wish it was 4" shorter and 10 less liters, but we'll see how she goes!

I can't say for sure about this one, but most of the Hobie CM Raw I saw with the spiderweb carbon were pretty fragile, in some cases just crap.  I believe the worst ones were made under license somewhere in Florida.  See if you can find out where this was made.

My Hobie Raw was hand shaped in California  with only carbon rails and stringer and is bomb proof.

Either way' I'd recommend glassing in or removing completely those two strap thingies on either side of the handle..prone to leak as mine did and had to have deck redone.

Thanks! That's exactly what I'm nervous about but am unsure of how to figure out if this was made in CA (good) or FL (bad). Does the number tell us anything? Or the purchase date? Do we know when things moved to FL?

reviving this thread since I'm eyeing a used 9'4 CM Raw and have a few questions regarding some of the comments here...

There are so many iterations of this board, I'm having a tough time figuring out if this is one of the good ones or not. It has the full spider web kevlar thing going on with some red and blue coloration scattered throughout that netting. It is numbered #218269. It also looks to have those two plugs above and below the handle for a paddle strap (or whatever).

If you have any input to clue me as in to whether this is one of the super awesome versions or one of the "prone to dings and depressions" models that'd be helpful!

here are some pics:
