I ended up ordering a harness and line for my F-One Swings.  I'm not sure that I will use it, but I did have this piece of info that may prove helpful to others.  When speaking to Dave @ Windance out in Hood River, he sold me a several year old harness at a discount that is designed for kite surfing.  The harness connection point / hook slides from the center to the front hip freely to allow harnessed riding with the kite off to your front hip or behind you when riding in a fixed stance. 

I believe this may be beneficial in two situations when winging with a harness:

- For hooking-in in situations where you don't want to (or not able to) switch stance on a long upwind ride.  In my limited experience, when in this situation, my leading shoulder, which holds the rear strut handle, was dealing with a bit of strain.

- A fixed anchor point on your belly will rule out prone paddling.  If riding in the surf and you wipe out, it would be nice feature to slide the anchor point to the side so that it is out of the way and allow climbing onto the board without worry for damaging the board etc. Or for situations where the wind dies or needing to paddle into a wind window where prone paddling is required.

I know nothing about kiting harnesses, so we'll see if these thoughts end up holding any salt.

Thank you for reminding me of this DW.  I think I will give this a shot.  Need to find something else to wrap the pvc in.  Maybe old wetsuit neoprene and black duct tape.

Who is using foot straps when winging?  I'm considering adding some to my FSM SUP using NSI adhesive surface mount inserts.  Was leaning towards the Armstrong straps.  Two up front/offset to allow switching stances and one strap over the mast.   While looking at NSI's sight, I came across this T-90 Foot Strap:



Seems to have come out some time ago to quite a bit of ridicule from kiters (big surprise).

I was thinking of setting up a similar orientation with the two Armstrong straps up front.  Anyone think this 'man thong' front foot strap would work well for Free Winging?

I suppose I need to get proficient on the wing before I make this leap, but I'm always interested to hear others thoughts on the matter.

I’m not 100% sure why I sold my Slingwing haha. I guess I have a similar wind situation to supkailua, with winds predominantly under the ideal wind range for the Slingwing. I only put in around 5 sessions with it and when up on foil it was a well behaved wing. What I didn’t like was the weight.  I plan on doing a lot of DW style riding and I want a super light wing to fly as much as possible as my apparent wind drops.

I’m hoping the Swing 5M and newly acquired 2400 foil wing (to join my 1550 and 1200 wings) will cover my really low end and the 3.5 will handle the gusty and stronger wind days. At 145 lbs, the 2400 practically lifts outta the water when stationary

I'm a lightweight at 145 and learned to pump on a 4'11" prone board and Armstrong 1600 wing by learning to dock start.  It took a few trips to an ideal dock, with a ton of failures, but it really helped me a ton in learning to pump when on a wave. 

The 1600 would likely be too small for learning to dockstart for your weight, but if you could ahold of a 2400, it really makes pumping easy and help hammer home the concept.  (I recently got one for use with light wind wingdinging) . I took took it to a small beach yesterday and tried to learn to beach start and couldn't do any better than jumping up on to my belly and flying for a second.  I don't know how guys do beach starts, so hard!

I was able to dockstart the 2400 and go for about 120 meters / 30 seconds before my legs stopped cooperating (weak). 

SUPeter has it right about the Unweighting. 

You could try hanging from a pull-up bar and repeatedly lifting your legs (front foot timed slightly ahead of rear foot) and return to the floor.  This will help with the un-weighting concept.  It really is about getting your weight off the board so the board will rise, while projecting forward, and then gliding and pushing the foil back into the water at a slight downward angle before repeating the process.

I have a 3.5 and 5M Swing on order since the beginning of the month.  Has anyone received one recently or tracking updates?  I sold my SlingWing last week and of course the first cold front and ideal wind direction for my home spot is lighting up tomorrow.  Ahhh.

Great topic. I feel like someone with some math and spreadsheets skills could come up with a formula to allow someone,  without all of the experience you guys have, quickly figure what size wing and foil they should be on depending on a wind range, rider weight, foil size.

I’m imagining some sort of magic ratio. It’s gotta be like a sliding scale, as I could probably ride a 2400cm wing and a 2m wing in 23knts or a 1200cm wing and a 4m wing in the same wind.

A squared + B squared = C squared
 

What is the magic coefficient??
