FoiltheGreats from the vid above inspired me to add my rear strap and launch a couple airs for the first time yesterday.  I was pretty timid at first for some reason, basically skimming the foil.  Then I started to huck a few and man it is a great feiling.  Definitely more slow motion and lower impact that I had feared.  Can't wait to keep at the air game!

The head scratcher in all this...the dihedral wind wings are the least stable.

My guess....we are unique and something else is going on, that makes more dihedral miss behave.

I think it is the wind getting under the raised tip. Our nose must stay pointed perfectly into the wind when on the nose handle. Any wind crab angle and wind gets under the elevated tip and the oscillation begins.

The least dihedral wind wings, as so tame.

Have you seen Jeffrey Spencer busting backflips holding Slingshot's delta shaped dihedral wing?  That thing looks super stable somehow.  Probably not efficient, but who needs efficiency with Maui's nuking winds.

TheProgressionPodcast recently scooped an Armstrong rig (finally) and he posted today on Instagram that heís running a -shim to get a more front footed ride and paired with the KdMaui 13.5Ē tail wing.

Iíve only run the 1250 with the +1 shim. Iím going to keep experimenting with different setups to find what I like best.

Vb,
I have exactly your same feeling.
Especially heelside to toe side tack are more difficult on the 1250hs In my opinion

Yeah, I'm still working on my confidence and success rate with tacks, and the 1550 will be the wing that helps me get that level up.  Once I'm super comfortable there, the 1250 will probably be much more approachable.

In other news, did anyone see that HS850 vid on someone's story on Insta?  Can't recall who it was, or I would have taken a screen shot.  Thing looks insane!  May need to see where that can fit into my foiling needs....

I'm using my 1250 for wave riding and the 1550 for everything else.  With only a few sessions on the 1250 so far, I feel that transitions may be easier on the 1550, but higher speeds are easier on the 1250.

A little off topic -- board lease instead of wrist (wing) lease.

In the video linked below Alan Cadiz talks about and shows his breakaway board lease (sea anchor).  It's a work in progress.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR5AGh4NcOM&t=2s

I'm ready to see someone try the drogue chute attached to a wing leash so you can ditch the wing after self towing into a wave.  Long paddle back, but could be good with the right spot/conditions.

Wing foil is evolving and my idea of this sport is evolving too.
I started to wing in july 2019 with a 2200 Slingshot front foil wing, then i i bought a 1500 Moses front wing. But is when i bought a Higher aspect ratio front wing (armstrong 1550 HS) that something just clicked in my mind.
Since that moment i was looking for flat water spot where to improve my carving abilities, one day i heard an interview of Nick Leason from Lift that was totally mind blowed from downwinding and i honestly could not understand why.
Only one month ago i Took my first wave with the 1550Hs and i let depowered the wing  and started to surf.. WOW, what a feeling.
From most of you it would be normal but for me it was completely out of this world. Since then i spent my sessions only going upwind and trying to downwind and surf the waves. Thatís why i also purchase the 1250 hs.. Today i finally tried it with 15 knots and 1,5 mt waves. The speed you got and the fact that you are totally in control of the waves and the water is so addictive!!!
i canít stop thinking about that.
When i finished my session i was so stoked!
Now i want to go faster and faster, maybe the 850 HS will be the one?
i donít know where are we going, but i see the pro riders riding a small foil (Titouan is riding always a very small foil that let him jump so high because of the speed he gains).
And also the Ultra HA wings from Armstrong (that probably will never be released) made me think that probably iím not the only one obsessed now with speed :)
i just felt like sharing with you my impressions :)
I can completely relate.  I have been chasing that sensation since the first time I felt the foil glide down a wave.  I first started kite foiling but ultimately found the kite to be in the way too much when trying to surf, so I took up winging.  Started with the large CF foils and then moved on to the 1850 which just made the addiction worse.  I tried a friend's 1250 which is an amazing wing and I have been playing around with the Lift HA wings which also glide and pumping amazingly well.  I see the wing mainly as a tool to get onto waves and am feeling more and more comfortable in bigger stuff.  I think my next step will be a crack at prone foiling as I love the idea of foiling surfing with nothing in my hands.

Did you see Alan Cadiz latest youtube vid where he uses a drogue chute attached to the end of his board's leash?  So when he wipes out in waves, the board stays away from him, but won't get blown downwind due to the water parachute.  I had the thought previously of using a drogue chute attached to the end of the wing leash so you could use the wing to self-tow into waves then ditch the wing and surf the wave, then prone paddle or pump back to the wing waiting outside the sandbar/reef.  I expect to see that at Jaws by the end of this season for sure. (any Maui riders lurking here feel fee to take the idea and run with it!!)

Yew! the stoke is real.  I, like you, tend to ride upwind hunting for bumps to carve onto and de-power to surf.  I came to winging from foil surfing, where the sensation of foiling waves really hooked me.  Now with the wing, I can go ride bumps in the river by my house and skip the 45 minute drive to the ocean. I'll still make the trip to the ocean but it allows those lunch break sessions I've been missing.

The HS850 has got my attention too.  I've got the cf800 and it's not too much faster than the 1050 from my initial test.

Next step is boosting!

I've got 4 suits in rotation due to water temperature fluctuations.  The suits lasts longer compared to if I used one throughout the season.

This thought process helped talk me into getting 5 wing sizes from BRM.  I'll use the wings less frequently, which means they will last longer? haha.

Regarding neoprene care:

Invest in a scuba gear hanger for your booties and gloves.  I have taken over the utility/guest shower for wetsuit drying.  The gear hanger allows you to easily hang the booties and gloves upside down for drainage.  You can also hang your helmet, real leash and other gear  Also get one of the wetsuit hangers, which allows you to fold it in half and hang from the middle of the suit.  This will extend the life of the suit as there is less stress on the shoulder seams while drying/storing. Flipping the suit inside/rightside out after a day will allow the suit to fully dry.

Regarding stink, get some wetsuit cleaner, such as 'Piss Off' by Ripcurl.  I typically only use it at the end of the seasonal use.  I deal with water temps starting in the 80s in the summer and dropping down to the upper 30s in some cases, and then back up, so taking care of the investment in a closet full of neoprene is important.

My heart rate is through the roof on light wind days with lots of pumping or sessions where the adrenaline is up.  Otherwise, pleasant conditions my heart rate is pretty mellow.

2.2m BRM today was a treat. So small! Gusting just over 30 in the mid Atlantic. Wouldnít have been fun on a larger size. 1.8 would be a good size for nuking conditions!

BRM 2.2M

First session with the tiny 2M at my local river spot with 20-30+ mph sideshore winds.  Put on the 1850 Armstrong wing to make sure I would get on foil easily in the extremely tight period 2+ windswell.  Last time I rode in these conditions was with the 3.5M Fone, which didn't fair too well for me at the time.

The 2M and 1850 combo was insane!   Spent 45 minutes ripping around chasing bumps and surfing them till I started to get downwind of launch then rip upwind and repeat.  It felt amazing to to have a small wing in heavy wind conditions.  So much more enjoyable to not be overpowered and umbrella'ing everywhere. Came in with dry hair and made it back to the office before the lunch hour was up.

Super glad I picked it up.

Just a warning to those, who like me, are generally too lazy to fix a waist leash that ends up between your feet.   If you are out riding head high waves, and your leash is routed between your legs, and you breach going 20 mph, your twig'n'berries (or lady parts) will become the new anchor point between you and your board.

I narrowly escaped a full on 'seeing stars' event when this happened to me last session.  Super exhausted and trying to avoid more time in the water, I ignored the leach routing around the front of my rear foot, through to the leash.  Caught a nice size set wave, breached and ejected off the nose for a 'graceful swan dive', and was still airborne when my retractable waist leash, which extends some 15-20', ran out of slack.  No bueno!  Even damaged the exterior of my wetsuit (which I'm very glad I was wearing).

Take the time to do the awkward rear leg lift dance to get the leash in place, or else!
