I find it is generally much harder to get on foil if the wind and current are going in the same direction.  You end up trying to fight the loss in apparent wind.  Upping the wing/foil size is a good call.  Staying upwind is also very difficult in these situations.

I recently picked up BluePlanetSurf's retractable board leash.  It is significantly longer than your standard leash so it is nice in the waves as it will extend so the board is pretty far away from you on a wipeout.  Even if the wing and board end up in line, the board will be beyond the wing, reducing the chance of wing damage due to foil.   This could work trying to get through shore break, so long as you are to the point where the foil doesn't have a chance of getting slammed in the shallows.

If I fall in the impact zone, I always prioritize the wing, by holding it up over the waves, or throwing over the waves if possible.  You get slammed by the waves, but at least the wing has a better chance!

Armstrong Power Link Bar used with the BRM Wing.  Pretty basic, but very light and adaptable to the different wing sizes so long as you have a few loops of spectra line.  Really like it.

Had the same thought listening to the podcast.   Can't wait to get my hands on the HS1250.

I’ve got 54 hours on the water according to my Waterspeed app. Not to say that I’ve been trying tacks for any significant portion of that time.  I’d try a few here and there but not really try and focus on them. The last two days the wind was good and The BRM wings really make it more fun and user friendly during the hand change through the eye of the wind.

Here are two clips showing my tack techniques.  May prove helpful to others thanks to the POV.

Noticed the front strap.   Are you foot switching during a session?

Still only rocking the single surf stance.  It's very comfortable for me.   Eventually I will learn riding switch.  It would come in handy for long upwind treks trying to get far upwind.  Haven't had too many of those situations, so no need for me yet.  I can hop on a skateboard and do a switch stance kickflip, so there is hope.

Foil SUP / Re: Foil Etiquette

I think it’s pretty simple. Whoever is paddling closest to the peak has right of way. Connecting flights are ok so long as you are 30 yards plus from the paddler, way out on the unbreaking shoulder.

After seeing Alex A’s BRM setup with Y handles, I set out to rig some for myself. I think I found a great setup that will work for all the wing sizes.  I picked up 10’ of 1/8” spectra, cut and made a few short loops, used some 3/4” webbing/straps, and picked up 4 hollow rubber handles online  I also used a ******** to connect to the rear handle, which really stiffens everything up.  I can’t wait to test it out! The adjustable straps and releasable knots will make for quick installation for all the wing sizes. Taking orders now (jk)

(Sorry for the crossed out photos, I’ll edit the complete photos in on Friday).

Last night I got a text from a local windsurfer I had been chatting winging with.

Meet at '****'s' tomorrow morning. Its ON.  You got the invite.'

He sent me a the address to his friends place and this guy has a house at the end of an isthmus jutting into the southern part of the Chesapeake Bay with amazing exposure to the north and NE winds that come down.  Private beaches facing two directions.  Just a 30 minute drive from my house and world class conditions.  Had a great session chasing swells.  I was 'the first winger' at the spot.  There were like 10 windsurfers there by the time I left mid-day.  All super nice.

TLDR: Word of advice for the surfer and SUPers that are moving into this sport; look up your local windsurf clubs etc. and introduce yourself.  You might get the hookup like i did!

Two handles on the BRM W1s are perfect.  Came from the Swings.

Thanks! I figured with the BRM pricing structure, may as well get them all and maybe sell the ones I feel I can do without. Might be able to get by with out the 6M at my weight.

The bag can barely fit Dwights 5’1” wing board, so that would fit the boom, right? It’s a quality bag with wheels.

Not duotone specific, but here's my travel plans for my wings.  I may be able to fit my prone in there as well if I fully deflate the wings.

I enjoyed the article as well.  I've chatted with Jo Aleh from time to time regarding winging.  She's awesome!

I like the sailing aspect of the article. That's one of the things that I love about winging. I was thinking it really is the most compact efficient sailing setup out there. I had been wanting to learn to sail before winging came around and when it did, i was able to teach myself and foil at the same time.  Win! I knew absolutely zero about point of sail etc. With a surfers background, I knew swell periods, angles, storms, wind directions, etc, but never applied any of that towards wind powered sailing.

Yowza!  That looks painful.  The gloves will help protect your ring finger too, as it’s snugged up to your pinky finger.

My injury is in between where the index and middle finger meet, so not out on the finger like yours.  You will love the gloves though. Nice amount of grip built in. Hopefully that works well and holds up with your boom.
