The Shape Shack / Re: Maximum Displacement Hull Speed

There is some talk here about the different "modes" of the foiling boats. Similar to what is being talked about here when getting up on the foil.

People have spent a lot of money crunching those numbers.
AC boats, more radical deeper bustle that looses stability as soon as it starts to lift. Less drag and quicker foiling.
IMOCA, shallower bustle. Better stability but slower getting onto the foil.
Not 100% relevant but there is plenty of info online about hull release, breaking surface tension when touching down etc.

How did it work out. Would be good feed back for the company.
Did you do any testing before and after?
You may not want to try this with your expensive kit. Clamp mast end in place. Must only be clamped where it attatches to the board or bolted in the same way it attaches to the board. Have 2 lasers, cheap ones builders use. One down the leading edge and one down the trailing edge. Put a strop with a cheap baggage scale attatched to the tip of the foil. Slowly pull on it. Use a small block and tackle or turnbuckle to be able to increase load slowly and evenly. You can then see and measure where and how the mast is twisting. Even twist, bottom or top twisting first. Trailing edge twisting first then front. Then add or remove laminates in the area on the next build. Or give this info back to the company.

Foil SUP / Re: new prop design for efoiling?
« on: January 30, 2023, 02:00:55 PM »
From what I understand the tolerances on this are tight.
It has been tried and if it works it will be awesome.
Just 3D printing a smaller version won't work for now.
What pitch and diameter do you go for!

I was going to post something about this a couple of weeks ago. But thought you guys had enough on your hands. Obviously not.
Looking for a new prop for a boat and this thing keeps popping up. They must have spent some money on advertising and how to make their prop come up first in a web search. Pono?
Like most things this has been tried. If they have got it right it could be amazing.
You are looking at 5000 dollars instead of 500 for a prop for a large outboard. Most boats with that size outboard have 2 or 3.
I think now with smaller props for electric powered vessels where efficiency makes a huge difference it may work.
Now sailing boats with electric engines that charge when the prop is spinning WANT the prop to spin when sailing.
This "new" idea may be well timed.
As Pono said in another post they have copyrighted the F out of it.

The whole wing foiling thing was amazing.
Got this wing thing its going to be awsome? No idiot.
Got this foil thing? No it wont work. Yes plenty of other sports are doing it.
Then like 10 years later you are where some sailing and foiling tech was 5 years ago.

I had a board built with straight rails looking for max float at min size. Corky is an understatement. Plus any swell or chop from the side was unbearable. I gave the board back to the builder since I couldn't ride it. Yes, of course I paid for it, it was my idea.

Pono:  Can you comment on what type of board this was? SUP, Foil, Wing  . . . .?  Volume . . .?

Here is an example that Kane DeWilde has been riding. I am not sure who the kid holding the board is BUT the rails are DEAD VERTICAL. It is also super narrow ~ 18".

I would say he is not pumping the board as much as some. Because he weighs sweet FA and has a nice HA foil. So not worried about sinking the tail.
 Again i dont foil.
But as foil and board design change there will always be a cross over point between foils and board shapes. And peoples skill?

Well after mentioning kayak foundry I thought I would have a look and see if it still exists! Yes it does. Tried to download one of my old files and it opens up Navionics on my phone and says file to large to import?
I remember the problem with kayak foundry was .yak files and nothing would recognise it. Oh nightmares coming back!

SUPeter, maybe you have looked but people have built kayaks and SUPs like this before. If you google foam strip kayak there are a few build threads.
As far as the forms you can do it on Shape3D if you have it or know someone with the paid version. There is a hollow board function. Mine expired sorry.
I used a free program called kayak foundry a long time ago. Pretty basic but allowed you to print out forms on A4 paper and glue them onto ply or whatever.
Or maybe your computer skills are better than mine(not difficult) and you have it under control.

Epoxy. Sika is good for some things for sure. But very messy and hard to clean up. It's quite thick and not great for tight tolerances.
Is this to glue the sections of wing together?
 Great progress

The NACA 63-412 profil has been used a lot in the past.

Awesome stuff. I agree on the flex for pumping. Even in the front wing. It must give you some help like when the tip of a paddle blade flexes and snaps back.
Not good for going really fast though.

Messaged a couple of friends and they both said the same thing.
If you can copy something accurately that works do it.
Then decide what you want to change.
That's when it gets difficult. You can't just make a foil longer or shorter etc. You have to change the chord.  Don't waste money on CFD until you really know what you are doing and get the most out of it as well. So I was wrong there.
So in general it looks like you are on the right track.
Then the build is important. No point spending a fortune designing something that flexes or twists. Again you are on it .

Spend money on good products. Spread tow carbon, the right epoxy and maybe some innegra. A wet out table.
As others have said I don't think you can easily make a hollow board lighter than an EPS core without spending quite a bit of money and experimenting.

3D print a male plug. Don't leave it in the board. Like the vid I posted of the catamaran construction.
