I ran across this and find the photography amazing and figured many here would also. Maybe I have and never realized it but in all my years in trout country I am not sure if I have ever seen fish do this.

This is from the last four summers/seasons. Here the seasons really are only Summer and Fall for paddling. By the time the ice is off it is basically Summer. These are all from either paddling or on the way to or from paddling. Maybe a stray one or two.
One of the first things I noticed about the Zone were the videos, DavidJohn, Headmount, and others for sure. Not long after hanging out here I decided I was going to make a video catching fish. Well, that basically led me to carrying a camera around all the time and here is some of that. It is all family and friends and........ if the Giants are playing......I have them on.
Without inspiration from the great photos by Supthecreek and others this probably would still not be done.

Tenkara.
Cleaning out my car yesterday and my little 3wt fly rod was broken. My favorite small stream rod. I use a 7wt on my board when fly fishing but I had been looking at Tenkara rods earlier this summer and thought it looked pretty fun. Ancient Japanese fly fishing is what it is. Really geared for small streams but plenty good for other waters.
They pack down small and it's simplicity in it's true spirit it seems. I pass so close to carp while cruising around on my board it just seems the perfect fit for much of what I see and try to do. I am going to order one today. Hopefully have in hand by next weekend. I will wait on the 3wt replacement and get one for bigger fish now. I not sure I can land many of the carp I see and target but holy cow........what a blast a 10 lber would be with this on a board. I think the board with it's built in drag will benefit landing big fish. Hopefully good weather, success, and pictures to follow in the next few weeks.

Fish Tales, Stand Up style / A few fish

Thought I would throw this up. Wiper, Largemouth and a Channel. First of each kind for me except the bigmouth. A small lake in south central Nebraska and another in western Nebraska that we camped at. A light house is on the lake where I caught the cat. About 75 years old if I remember right. The Wipers school up and chase schools of baitfish around and are on the surface some doing that. Lots of fun to chase them around when they are. First time I have seen that.

NorthWest / Shout out to a great little shop and merchant.
« on: May 01, 2013, 06:49:26 PM »
I stopped into a little store a couple weeks ago called All Sports Eyewear in Park City, Utah. It is smack downtown within a dozen steps to the ski lift up the mountain. I walked up to a very small store and a bit bemused because of it's location. Small inside too with goggles and sunglasses everywhere. I looked it up on the internet prior to going as I wanted to find a store with paddleboards while in town. I walked in, and without looking up, saw someone and said I had read he had paddleboards. He looked up, then I did too. Jimmy Lewis, Hobie, SIC, Boardworks, Bark, all sorts. Kenalu, QB, Kialoa....all the good stuff. SIC and Kenalu this far inland? Are you kidding? WOW! I got to see one of the NSP Coco mat boards too. The passion and friendliness of Marty is second to none. His willingness to share his experience and knowledge is amazing. I talked for an easy half hour to 45 minutes and he took us down to his warehouse shop to see more of his goodies. Yes, it was off season and late afternoon but.....such a great guy. If you are ever in Salt Lake City area make sure and stop.

(Admin, I did not know exactly where to post this but wanted to give a shout out so if there is a more appropriate place for this please move this thread to there.)

Flatwater and Touring / First paddle of the year.
« on: April 27, 2013, 07:48:48 AM »
Thought I would throw this up. On the water in April and for around here that is doing pretty good. Just shy of 6 months since my last paddle. I set out not 100 percent sure the ice would be off where I was going and the first glimpse I get of the lake from the hiway is a sheet of white. I get closer and the bay I launch in is ice free. Should be all gone by end of the weekend. A few pics. No fishies this time. As I got within 100 feet or so of the ice I could feel the temperature drop. Not many pictures, I didn't want to fall in.

But they are still holding out on us on this here in the USA. I missed it when it ran. Wonder what kind of spat is going on with that.

Random / Alaska, a whale, and a kayak
« on: March 04, 2013, 06:01:38 PM »
Ran across this and have no clue if it is real. This is what was posted along with the photo:

"The photo was taken at the entrance to Katlian Bay at the end of the road in Sitka , Alaska.
The whale is coming up to scoop up a mouthful of herring (the small fish seen at the surface around the kayak).
The kayaker is a local Sitka Dentist. He apparently didn't sustain any injuries from the terrifying experience.
The whale was just around the corner from the ferry terminal, and all the kayaker could think at that moment
in time was: "Paddle Man--really fast!"
The whale's mouth is fully open with the bottom half under the boat."
