"Hey man, don't ride that here. Go over there."

Problem solved. Local problem, local solution.

When you starting to print stuff? I wanna hear about the stress tests. If this works it's a game changer. I'm following this across two platforms now. Come on!! Haha

Ok, you're older and have surfed. The ideas here are right on as far as North. Watch the report closely, swell comes up quickly in HI, but those spots are solid options and most folks will takemit easy on an Uncle. ;)

If you find a board, east side can be a good safe haven if it's big.

Gene,

Give us so info so we don't get you beat up or drowned.

How long you been surfing? How long you been SUP surfing? Where do you normally sup surf? What kinds of waves (and size) are you comfortable with?

North Shore til April (at least) can be dicey without local knowledge imho.

Hard to beat renting a longboard in Waikiki and just proning in the best place to learn on earth.

. I'd jump in and get all sticky and dusty, but the last thing I need is another project.

That comment was pure Pono bait to see if you'd do it. 😆 Hope someone does.

I'm literally in a cold sweet trying to not start a DW SUP right now. Gonna do a tow boogie if I can stay away from the foam and carbon for a minute.

I have a 4/3 need essentials too. Nice neoprene but like all 4/3's a bit stiff. Warm as all get out.

I love the ideas here and the desire to innovate.

Meanwhile I'm on board #9 and have a 8.8lb 4'9" wing board with 6oz carbon and 6oz glass, boxes and a handle.

It's not done but I'm doing Peter's barely filled microballoon method so I think I'll be good.

It cost under $200 in new parts since I used all my leftovers. Y'all boys need to go to the garage and get sticky and dusty. It'll all work out.

If you wanted to get crazy I'd follow Peter's crazy carbon tow reinforcement path. Shape the bottom and rails on a blank like a canoe, leave the top off. Lam a top on a thin sheet of eps. Cut out all the foam from the bottom "canoe" and then put in the carbon tow superstructure. Glue the top on and ride.

You're welcome. But thank Peter, he paved that road.

Foil SUP / Re: To those who have paid their dues on foil in the surf:

Don't bother. It'll just make you frustrated.

Sell it and buy a bigger board.

I'm gonna need you to put some remote control on this tow boogie I'm designing.

Clay's on track. But I'll add that a blank made of pieces might be best. Central piece of 1.5lb and the nose and rails from ultralight or chamber them. Strong, light, minimal extra work.

Also I'll add that PeterJ and the SF crew's method of microballoon filler with no hot coating is the way. Far less resin, far less weight.

I wonder. Will the skin required to hold you be heavier than having a core?

I estimate yes. Blanks are light. They get heavy when laminated. But I don't know squat really. But a damn expensive experiment to potentially end up with a heavy board. I'll for sure watch and support ya.

Why not just hollow out or cut cores out of an eps blank like guys do with chambered balsa or redwood boards? Easy and you can make it as hollow as you dare.

Saw the title. This is clickbait.

Should read, "completely expected problem at Ka'a"   ;D

Admin, this is inspiring.

I'm working out a printer now myself. Let me know if you guys want me to take a bullet wet laminating one of these when you get some protos cooked up.

General Discussion / Re: Should this site be renamed the foil zone?
« on: November 26, 2022, 07:32:46 PM »
Foil zone exists of course.

But yes to all that's been said. If y'all SUP folks start innovating like people did in 2010-2014 I'll bet the posts heat up again. But most every kind of SUP has been done and written about, so the new thing you do standing up took over. Still the same crew. Hell, some of us have aged out of things and still show up.

Back to that innovation. Remember 2012 when people made really short SUPs so you could surf better?  What if I told you I knew how to make a sup with a new way to surf faster and longer and catch even more waves? I have two. Put a foil under it and hold a wing while you stand up and surf.

If Kai's 7'x24" board at Sunset was a SUP then all these foils are too. But will I still paddle on flat water? Sure, a couple of times a year. Try a foil. If we old farts can do it you can.

75
Badger, I think the industry is following the pros for now who are able to ride really short.

I myself now love my 23x4'6" board for good conditions. The turning is really fun and responsive.

But I do agree that for a lot of folks, especially flat water cruising like you're describing they would be really fun. For that use and if you're not DW-ing I'll bet you could go shorter. Those will show up used I'll bet since open water people are going longer now. Steamroller has a 7'6" on the way from his shaper as we speak!!
