Random / Hurricane Harvey - Gulf zoners
« on: August 24, 2017, 06:19:20 PM »
Well, I guess I won't get to sneak a few waves this trip with any of the Texas zoners. We are hunkered down waiting on Harvey. I'm out east, nearer to Beaumont and 30 miles inland and all stocked up. So as long as the drainage works, we'll be fine, but I'm hoping the rest of you guys are ok.

Post up as you can.

Random / Nland Surf Park - Austin Tx. Surfcowboy for real
« on: August 05, 2017, 12:14:39 PM »
Heading to Texas for some fun and work this week. I booked 2 sessions at the nland wave pool in Austin. Looking forward and of course I'll post up here with a report.

Weirdly, my buddy surfed there and tipped me off to the weirdest thing. Watch the videos, you surf towards the pier, not away from it. I've never really noticed it before but it's completely counter-intuitive. He said that you never really get close to it but it's weird seeing a wall in front of you as you surf, at first.

I can't wait. 83° water too. Yee haw!

Foil SUP / Wing lift or AOA lift?
« on: July 23, 2017, 09:54:45 AM »

I submit this as evidence of these wings not working the way many think they do.

If these wings were generating lift like an airplane wing, this Nash would be flying dead level in the water. These guys are only lifting with a high AOA and speed. Now some will say they aren't going fast enough but really 15kph, 10 mph and that big wing should be flying like a bird, am I wrong here?

Beasho, Pono, and others with the math, are we looking at why flat foils should (and in kiteboarding seem to) work?

If we can't vary the pressure of water like we do air, then traditional wings clearly must work differently or not at all.

I'm about to start a build and I think I need to go flat and see what happens. Anyone else done any work like this?

I'm thinking of the discussion of whether my paipo was foiling or skimming/planing and from what I can see here, it's the same thing as long as your mast is long enough to keep you "planing" below the surface.

Am I off track here?

I do agree that shape and curve, dihedral etc would affect controllability and performance but I'm now very suspicious of worrying about the profile of the wing after watching hours of video of people doing this.

Let's hear it and try to keep it on topic and not personal. I have no info here but I'm seeing some things that don't add up. If wings work in water then someone should be flying one dead flat at speed. Real world experience is welcome as well, are you guys flat or angled?

The only boards I see flat/horizontal are dudes on waves and that gives you an extreme AOA to the surface of the water.

The Shape Shack / Fusion360- getting started
« on: July 09, 2017, 08:25:56 AM »
After the success of TallDude's Shape3D thread and the benefits I got from it and watching SUPUK get into the app, I wanted to see if I could help some other 3D newbies get started.

I know nothing about 3D and very little about 2D apps but using this set of three tutorials I was able to design my first piece (a watch mounted sunscreen holder) the first day.

This channel is a great place to start and he has 3 tutorials that run about an hour to get you going. The software is free for hobbyists and educational use, by the way and for me, it was a revelation.

I put this in the shape shack because I thing more jigs and tools and parts will come from this than we can imagine at the moment. I'm re-working my Futures jig soon and then have a few other ideas as well.

Hope this help spark some ideas and creativity. Post up your own favorite tutorials if you would.

Foil SUP / It's not the foil, it's the paddle - foils in LA County
« on: July 09, 2017, 08:17:22 AM »
Well, the cherry is popped. Saw a short board prone on a foil at Malibu yesterday with like 100 people out, on a Saturday afternoon!

No one died and no one said a thing (I'm sure he was a local but didn't get to see him up close. So if you're wondering, it's official. Paddles and big boards are far more dangerous than foils. ;)

Don't take the bait, I'm trolling you all. But it was cool to see even if I might not have done that myself.

The truth is, like most things, I believe it's the pilot, not the craft and most people are unable to honestly judge their skills. I was probably way more dangerous on a longboard when learning than that guy on a foil. It took me a couple of years to figure out how dangerous I was in waves of a certain size, and then, by the time I knew, I was no longer unsafe.

Funny how it seemed that more people dropped in on my wavestorm than his foil. I can't understand it. Hahahahaaaa, I doubt this is a trend so I was glad to catch it.

The Shape Shack / Josh Dowling and the dangers of epoxy
« on: July 03, 2017, 09:41:41 PM »
Some good history and a cautionary tale here.

Josh helped bring epoxy construction to the fore and is now paying a health price. Keep those masks on and suit up when sanding boys. But a great story and I wish him well in the next phase of life.

Foil SUP / Dual box mast mount
« on: June 18, 2017, 07:05:25 PM »
Ok, getting deeper into the design of my foil project and thinking of how to reinforce the 6+4 bottom of my Simmons SUP.

Rather than just do a HD foam mount, since everyone agrees that the skin takes the force and not the foam, I'm considering a carbon and glass variant on SUPUK's idea.

2 boxes laid out face down at the correct distance and then make a glass and carbon plate by vacuuming a few layers around them. Say make the flange/plate 12" wide by 24" long.  Then you could cut the bottom skin out 12x24, route the spots for the boxes and lay the whole thing in and glass it to the bottom skin. (Probably overlap it an inch or so if you sanded the end gets thinner and faired the bottom of the board.

I might even stiffen it up with some triangular braces that you could slit the foam to accommodate.

What do you guys think? Anyone following me here?

Post up other ideas but I've got a 1.5lb EPS blank with layers of 6ox and 4 oz glass. No sandwich. How far do I need to go to secure this thing?

Foil SUP / Hamsterdam foil

Jetfoil electric busted in Amsterdam. This thing flies.

4th try with the link. Someone else fix it. You can leave the site and google it on Vimeo til there's a tutorial on how to deal with video links.

Sorry admin, I tried to get you some ads served. ;)

Foil SUP / Kai Lenny foils 50 miles on a shortboard!?
« on: March 29, 2017, 06:38:45 PM »
I can't even comment on his alien water skills. Big Island to Maui. No paddle, no nothing.

If any of you talk about life vests or sunscreen I'll troll you til admin throws me off of here. ;) This is next level.

Random / surf mat v1
« on: March 20, 2017, 09:02:39 PM »
It's a good thing I don't live closer to the water, I might build less.

That's a good wife who will help you mock up mat templates in paper.

This one will take a bit. Surffoils, I'll add this to your thread on the other site too.

Got some nice camo fabric that I hope holds up.

Foil SUP / Cowboy Foil Experiment Thread
« on: March 13, 2017, 12:57:28 PM »
A good old fashioned backyard build thread. I'll be making multiple versions but this is where I start and I'll track the next few prototypes and experiments.

Thanks to supUK for convincing me to start sanding, to Pono for his matching love of science and disregard for good sense, and surffoils for reminding me that a bodyboard is a lot easier to fall off of than a SUP.  ;)

This thread sponsored by Wile E Coyote.

Now, let's get into it.

Yes, I know it's huge. I can always cut it but adding wood is so much harder. It's scientifically designed by having a piece of wood this size. About 24" X 12". I wanted to see if the fore/aft stability of 12" would work with a body board but I'll be taking a bolt on fuselage and tail to stabilize it at the beach if this doesn't prove wide enough front to back to balance on.

I can also move it up and back as my board is a wood paipo so that should make on the fly adjustments at the beach easy as well. (Taking a buddy to assist, hold tools, and maybe film in case America's Funniest Home Videos or Red Bull, depending on the success or failure, is paying.)

The mount will likely need some beefing up and I'll also probably want to be able to stabilize it fore and aft so I can adjust the angle of attack. I'm thinking of using a threaded rod near the tail between the board and wing with nuts to adjust the AOA. I'm just sealing it with polyurethane for the tests so I can hack it up if/when I mod it.

I'd assume that after the first session I'll be cutting this down to about 6" and using the fuselage, but this rig will also accommodate a wider disc if I want to make one for single foil testing as we have discussed on the surffoils thread but this is sort of a mashup of his ideas, Terry Hendricks and then the GoFoil stuff if/when I add a tail.

The last shot is a mock up, I'm going to cut down the Paipo and then play with my balance point til I find a starting place.

What are you waiting on boys? Quit reading and start sanding!

The Shape Shack / Vacuum bagging rigs - mini to maxi
« on: March 08, 2017, 07:35:08 PM »
Ok guys, since a few of us are likely going to be bagging some foils and other foolishness I wanted to get and share some info on pumps.

I've seen the reverse aquarium pump hack (google it on Swaylocks) but some are saying to buy something bigger. I'd rather not clog up the garage too much more and since I do like 2 boards a year I'm guessing I could use something smaller.

Who's got what and who's used what? No compressor hacks or shop vacs here please. We don't wanna break more than we make. ;)

Also if you're posting eBay links which will expire, let's copy the make and model info here so future shapers can still use the data.

Random / Drone Delivery - where it will start
« on: March 07, 2017, 06:59:10 PM »
Surffoils inspired this in another thread and I didn't want to hijack his thread.

The question that always comes up is, "How will drones deliver things without causing huge liability issues?"

Like everything, this won't be something that happens overnight in the world's most populous areas but I have the perfect place and scenario that it will happen and soon.

I'm posting so we can see if I'm an idiot or a genius in 4 years.

On the North shore of Kauai and Oahu there are resorts that are anywhere from 10 to 20 miles from a store or restaurant and those miles are on 2 lane highways. There's your first huge liability win. Way more people killed delivering by car or bike than any drone.

Next, you have stores and restaurants in both areas that have easy access to open ocean routes to the hotels. A drone takes off and is almost instantly over water the whole way.

At the beachfront resort, there can be a small path for the water to the landing pad where guests are encourage to be careful and not sit on the beach there. The drone comes in, crosses 50-100 ft of beach and is met by an employee who is notified by app when the drone nears the resort.

Cargo unloaded, app notifies the drone that its ok to return. End of transaction.

If you think I wouldn't pay $10-$20 to not drive 45 min to the store when I'm on vacation, you don't know me or a lot of people.

That flight range is within current imagination and a 10 lb payload is do-able as well in a drone that would fit this use case and price structure.

If you've visited one of these resorts you already know that this is not only viable, it's probably overdue as far as customers are concerned.

My place in the desert also has a flight plan that would avoid almost all human contact and most any Friday night I'd pay a good bit for a pizza sent 5 miles as the crow flies instead of 15 by car.

I'd love to hear more feedback on this but I think that this is one of the best places for this to start.
