Random / Electric Skateboards - Meepo Campus 2
« on: September 09, 2019, 08:15:39 PM »
Started skating again at 53. Just needed a dry land hobby. Too far to the beach to get out enough and flat days can leave me off the water for 2 weeks. Bought every pad you can wear and a helmet and humbled myself on my local sidewalk.

Got comfortable after a week and then noticed my Achilles on my push leg was killing me. Did some research and found Meepo boards. Checked craigslist and found a used Campus 2 for $225 and grabbed it. They are $300 new.

Here’s the first takes after 3 days of tearing around the empty streets of my hood.

These things are waaaay too fast for a sane adult. Mine has the smaller battery and a single motor and hits 17 mph. I’m comfortable up to about 10-12. There are 4 modes and I’m rocking #2 and unlikely to go beyond that unless I’m being chased.

The range is 10 miles. If you’re an adult, good luck with your calves and shin muscles holding up for more than may 2-3 miles at first. This has been great for my lower body since I’ve not been paddling much these days.

Having brakes and removing the need to push takes most of the hardest parts of skating out of the equation. I cannot see why brakes aren’t on every regular skateboard made. I’m going down hills I wouldn’t have taken with less fear. (Note, you still need to know how to stop as these things can fail of course.) and know that the Campus 2 doesn’t have the smoothest breaking, that’s the main place I see the lower price.

The carving feels exactly like snowboarding. I’m literally snowboarding down my empty street every evening after work for 20-30 minutes. I love it. I’m now working on mellower elbow pads and maybe switching to slider gloves instead of wrist guards so I can get in and out of errands quicker. My lunch trip today was an adventure and I’m surf training at the same time. (It’s crazy the difference swinging your shoulders makes in your turning radius. Btw)

Cons? Cars have no idea you are on the planet. I’ll not be riding this thing anywhere but a super quiet residential street or bike path. But the sidewalks are fine on this thing so who cares. And this little dude isn’t going to power up serious hills with the single hub motor so flat land only unless you’re upgrading to dual motors.

I love it and love having an electric vehicle. These things have hit the magic spot where the cheap tech is as good as the average person needs. If you’re looking for a fun goof off board, this one is a lot of fun and for $400 there are versions that will blow your mind.

Wingsurfing, Windfoiling, Wingfoiling, Wing SUP / SoCal Wing Lessons??

SoCal wing lessons?

I (and potentially my mother in law) want to try these things.

Is anyone teaching this is Southern California? Obviously we’d like to try on standard SUP.

LA, OC, or SD is fine. Take our money!!

Check out the SUP at 5:10 in. Anyone know this guy? If so, maybe tell him how waves work?

Look, I’ve been there, but no wonder people get bummed when we start sweepin’   ;D

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Miami, So Florida summer surf?
« on: June 14, 2019, 07:42:51 PM »
Miami, in July and August. Is it as bad as I think?

Should I just go to that cable park in the Keys and learn to foil while I’m there?

I’ll be there for work and seeing friends. Wondering if there’s even knee high waves to longboard. I’ll grovel and ride about anything so what’s the story?

The Shape Shack / Hand Shaping - give it a go
« on: May 07, 2019, 01:43:24 AM »
So after deciding to not learn to foil just yet (more on that in another thread.) I decided that I need to round out my prone quiver with a lighter longboard and a decent mid length in the 7’ range.

I went to Fiberglass Hawaii with a buddy and picked up 3 blanks to chop away on. We bought a Wen Planer, unmodified, and set out to shape a mini Simmons and 2 longboards.

I’ll post up pics, but the Simmons is almost done and looks good. I’m starting a 9’0” longboard next. But after my third board now I really see the fun of hand shaping and am likely going to hand shape my next SUP. (Longboard style or a 12’ coastal cruiser type thing.

Just wanted to put in a pitch for those of you wanting to make your own boards who don’t live near a CNC. Get some smaller blanks to learn on. Make a few for your surfing buddies or some groms and then tackle whatever SUP you want to make. But after a couple it gets easier and more fun and the few hundred bucks you spend learning is well worth it as you may find a life-long hobby. I’m on my third board now (not counting the restoration of 2 classic longboards and my foil project ) with no signs of stopping.

Hawaii / Oahu - south shore winter foiling?
« on: November 24, 2018, 06:05:40 PM »
Asking Oahu folks (Robert from Blue Planet?) Is foiling possible or maybe even fun on South shore in the Winter?

I love the quick trip and easy hotel access of Waikiki but never really make it in Summer. Has foiling opened up the South shore in Winter for fun?

Foil SUP / Tips for learning to foil behind a boat - post em!
« on: June 27, 2018, 07:42:17 PM »
Ok, I want to try to make a thread to gather tips for boat sessions. Here goes some questions to start.

How long do you need to get towed?

How long can you physically get towed before you wear out? I have no idea how long to tell my friend I'll need but I'm assuming 2 - 30 min sessions with a break between should wear me out, am I close?

I got the tip from Beasho's thread about getting pulled front side meaning that regular footers should be on the outside of the wake of a boat going clockwise and goofies should be towed counter clockwise.

Once your going holding the rope seems like whatever hand is closer to the boat to keep you in a squared off stance.

As to start, should you be on your knees? Can you start standing if you have the balance?

How long of a rope? 75' standard waterski rope? Less?

Let's make the official info thread here so folks can learn from it.

Foil SUP / What foil rig for me? - general topic for all requests
« on: March 20, 2018, 07:08:49 PM »
Just wanted to start this to prevent all the foil threads from turning into, "Hey, what foil should I buy?"

Nothing personal aimed at anyone, but this way it'll all be in one place. So big, small, short, tall, fat, skinny, post up here and the guys who know can help you out.

Maybe also if you have a rig you like, post up your size, age, and ability for reference. Send folks here if they show up on your thread too if you can. It'll make for better reading and reference over time.

Foil SUP / Foil on soft boards
« on: January 26, 2018, 06:59:50 PM »
Ok look about half of this thing is speculation at this point so let's speculate boys. (Still hoping some women will join here some day. I finally got 2 awesome female surfers in my core crew this year.)

Foamies, love 'em, hate 'em, but either way they are a thing.

Daily Bread broke an INT so I wanted to post my idea for foiling a softie.

I wanted to set up a Wavestorm to learn to prone and what I came up with was not to mount to the board, but to mount the board, onto a board.

1/4" plywood sealed up as the bottom of the foam board. Maybe 2" narrower in each side to keep the rails from being hard and 4 t-nuts that you could bolt the foil into.

My first backyard test would be like Piros duct taping a foil on. Just wrap the plywood to the board with tape like a mummy to prove the concept and if it worked then you could permanently glue the ply down and also maybe put a few anchors through the board to reinforce it.

I'm trying to envision a longer term custom prone foil board for myself and I can't see why I wouldn't just bag EVA on the top instead of bothering to sand it down.

Who's crazy enough to grab some ply and gorilla tape from Home Depot and get to it? Daily Bread, I think you have the perfect test board now.

Foil SUP / Angle of Attack of foils
« on: January 06, 2018, 09:02:16 AM »
Foil owners and observers, let's talk AOA.

I'm using the chord line for my 0° mark. However it got me to thinking. Although that's the easiest way to guess without having a way to easily measure true zero lift I'm curious as to how other foils are set up.

For instance, the Naish looks to be set with the bottom flat from videos and pics. Is that not the case?

Other folks, what do your foils have for AOA?

Foil SUP / Foil layups?
« on: October 20, 2017, 08:50:07 PM »
Ok so I'm assembling a hot wire cutter and starting to ruin foam learning to cut wings. Who's got any idea about what carbon I should be using.

Fiberglass Supply always has various deals but they all seem heavy. They've got 9 oz and 11 oz on special but am I right that I should be somewhere more like 6oz with a few layers of carbon and glass laid up together?

I'm looking at a plywood mast and fuselage (ala sea breeze) and then likely a foam core wing. What's the jam here?
