Foil SUP / Re: Lift Foil or Armstrong Foil
« on: October 25, 2019, 02:26:39 PM »
I foil with quite a few guys who ride armstrong. They ALL ride the 1200.  Even the ones that own the 1600, only ride the 1200... Though they were also just complaining about their inability to pump and get multiple waves.

165-170ish, thinking more for with a wing. I'd use the 900 in the surf.

I'm assuming you like the 1020 better because it doesn't drop out at slow speeds like the higher aspect wings do. Was thinking the 1020 would be better when the wind is lighter, and then the 900 when its cranking. (I have a 4.2 swing) Just wanted to hear others thoughts and experiences with the 2 wings.

Just picked up an axis set with a 900 wing. Wondering which of the bigger wings you guys prefer now? 1000 or 1020? And why? What's your daily driver?

I'm probably going to put in an order for a different size mast (got 68 and 90, but want the 75 for prone foiling), and a bigger wing, just can't decide which or if I should just stick with the 900.

The reason is the Swing 5 has a much lower wind threshold and it covers what the wind is normally blowing at my location.

Where are you? Oahu?

Ha! Last weekend I pulled up to one of the spots I frequent and there were easily 30 foilers out! Both Saturday and Sunday mornings... The best part was I foiled the same spot Friday evening and had it all to my self

Foil SUP / Re: Fastest learning method to Foiling
« on: June 05, 2019, 08:45:39 PM »
Similar to Hdip, I learned on a 4'7 prone board. I'm 6mo in and feel like I can surf the foil pretty well.  I still crash a lot on steeper drops, but otherwise feel like I have good control and can turn well. (haven't got a 2 for 1 yet, but know if I had a bigger foil I'd have them down) (I also live across the street from the beach and often have multi session days with 5-6+ hours in the water)

From my experience and watching my friends learn, I feel like the biggest problem people have initially is just getting your feet in the right place.  With many of them saying that they can't figure out where to put their feet. Especially SUPers, as they have such a big area where they can move.  Also a few of them have mentioned when they ride waves on a normal sup, they are constantly moving their feet, while on a foil they have to put them in one spot and not move them.

My suggestion for learning would be to first get pulled behind a boat on a sup foil, learn to control the foil up and down, then work on turning and pumping.  Once you are turning, get rid of the rope and focus on riding the boat wake without the rope. Once you can ride the wake, move to catching waves, the smallest mushiest waves you can find, making sure you have the same foot positioning you had while riding the wake.

If I fall to the side it's usually because I tried to turn the board before I get up on the foil. If I get up on foil then turn, usually works much better. The other reason I fall to the side is because I'm not going fast enough. Like riding a bike, the slower you go the easier to tip over.

Foil SUP / Starting over

I've asked this on another forum, just wondering what everyone would choose...

Imagine you just lost all your gear. It got stolen or broke and now you need to start from scratch. What foil would you buy? Knowing what you know now, what wings are available or about to be released, what would you get? You can't get a bro deal, or cheap from a friend. You're paying full retail. What's your choice and why?

Foil SUP / Re: Tail shim vs mast position in tracks
« on: May 29, 2019, 07:18:19 PM »
I started with my mast all the way back, and then slowly moved it forward about 1/2 inch to an inch at a time.  It definitely makes a big difference.

I haven't adjusted the tail wing and am also curious as to what effect it has and how it differs from just moving the mast forward and back.
